Chapter 9: Going to Work

When it was eight o'clock after finishing the work, Su Qingmeng took out the bedside lamp from the space and placed it on the table, then took out an old newspaper to read.

The main themes of today's newspapers are both red and professional, and the content is relatively simple, not as rich and colorful as the various columns in later generations.

Su Qingmeng was eating an apple while reading the newspaper. This was a habit she developed in modern times. Eating an apple before going to bed every day has many benefits.

After reading for half an hour, Su Qingmeng went to sleep. She had to rest early because she would start work tomorrow.

The next day, Su Qingmeng was awakened by the whistle for work. This whistle would blow three times in the morning: at 5:20, 5:40, and 6:00. Cooking in large pots over firewood wasn't as convenient as with modern gas and running water, and it took a long time, so she had to get up after the first whistle.

Wear long sleeves and long pants today to avoid getting sunburned. While washing up, she harvested the sugarcane. There weren't many apples in the warehouse, so Su Qingmeng planted 10 apples and continued to grow wheat on the remaining farmland.

Eat tomato and dumpling soup in the morning with an egg in it. It is convenient, fast and nutritious.

When she went out, she would carry a shoulder bag and a military water bottle, a handful of candy and a handkerchief in the bag. Since there were no tissues available, she had to get used to carrying a handkerchief.

Wearing a straw hat and gloves, Su Qingmeng went to work fully armed.

Zhou Wenxi also came out, and the two walked together. On the way, she looked at Su Qingmeng several times, and finally couldn't help asking, "Aren't you hot wearing so many clothes?"

Su Qingmeng was a little embarrassed. "I was afraid of getting tanned, so I put on more clothes."

Zhou Wenxi: "I was about the same white as you when I came here, but look at this color now." Her skin is two shades darker than Su Qingmeng's.

Su Qingmeng needs to pay more attention to sun protection. Her skin is now white and tender and needs to be well maintained. Although people look at her strangely from time to time on the road, she acts as if nothing has happened. This is very normal.

It was almost 6 o'clock when we arrived at the threshing ground. The new educated youth were assigned to weeding. Su Qingmeng and Tian Ke were assigned to Team 5. The team leader asked an older woman to take care of them.

The old lady introduced herself as Aunt Cuihua. She enthusiastically taught them how to identify crops and weeds. After making sure that they had mastered the skills, she went on to do the work. In a short while, she had learned much more than them.

Su Qingmeng wore gloves, so she didn't hurt her hands while pulling weeds. Tian Ke pulled directly with her hands, and soon her hands turned red. She said enviously, "Su Zhiqing, you're so well prepared! I didn't even think you'd need gloves."

Su Qingmeng has also read dozens of period novels, so she prepared everything she needed two days ago.

It happened that she was not very skilled at the job and could only pull weeds with her right hand, so she gave one of her gloves to Tian Ke. Tian Ke said happily, "Thank you, Su Zhiqing. Can I call you Qingmeng?" "Sure, then I'll call you Xiaoke."

Su Qingmeng chatted with Tian Ke while working. The two of them kept moving forward at a snail's pace. It was great that there was someone as bad as her. She felt much better.

The summer sun was scorching, and around nine o'clock, Su Qingmeng couldn't stand the heat any longer. Sweat streamed down her forehead, and her eyes stung. She wiped the sweat with her handkerchief, but it was so hot that she could wring out water.

Su Qingmeng looked around and found that some people were working hard, while others would slack off after working for a while.

Gao Xiaohuan, assigned to Team 4, had already gone to rest under the shade of a tree. The team leader saw her and called out, "Gao, stop being lazy and get back to work."

Gao Xiaohuan returned to the fields reluctantly. Several aunts were talking about how "the educated youth from the city are so spoiled." "That's right. Every year, there are educated youth who don't work hard and come to the countryside to share our food." Gao Xiaohuan was so angry that she started crying. Tian Ke went over to comfort her.

Su Qingmeng took the opportunity to take a break and drink some water. There was only half of water left in the kettle.

In the remaining time, her proficiency improved and her speed increased. Su Qingmeng would slack off from time to time, and would work seriously when she saw the team leader coming.

Finally, at 11 o'clock, work was over and the three newly educated youth went home together. Tian Ke sighed, "I'm so tired!" Gao Xiaohuan complained sadly, "It's dirty, tiring, and the sun is scorching. I can't stand it anymore." She held out her hand, her palm red and with a few small cuts, "My hand is hurt!"

Tian Ke: "I have some medicine. I'll apply some when I get home. We need to go buy a pair of gloves."

The two agreed to take a leave to go to the commune tomorrow, and Su Qingmeng asked them to help bring two rolls of toilet paper.

Zhou Wenxi was already cooking when she returned to the educated youth camp. When she saw Su Qingmeng come in, she asked, "Are you feeling okay?"

Su Qingmeng smiled bitterly. "Not very good. It's too sunny, and my waist is sore."

Zhou Wenxi said it would be fine after a while, as she has now become accustomed to doing farm work every day.

Su Qingmeng went back to her room and lay on the kang, not wanting to move. After resting for half an hour, she got up and cooked.

She simply cooked some corn grits porridge, went back to the house and replaced it with chopped pepper fish head, hot and sour potato shreds, and rice from the warehouse, and had a full meal.

After sleeping for more than an hour at noon, Su Qingmeng got up when the work whistle sounded. She took a refilled water bottle, put a towel around her neck, and went directly to the field to continue pulling weeds.

After a busy afternoon, Su Qingmeng had never felt time stretch so long. Finally, at five o'clock, the team leader came over to count everyone's centimeters. Su Qingmeng only had four centimeters.

A few minutes later, a handsome man with a notebook came over. He must have been the scorekeeper. After everyone's work points were recorded, they went home.

On the way back, an old lady was talking about the scorekeeper, "After Yao became a scorekeeper, more people proposed marriage to him."

Another said: "He has three rooms by himself. Although he doesn't have parents to help him, he is the head of the family as soon as he enters the house. The team leader is his uncle. I want to marry my daughter too."

From their casual conversation, Su Qingmeng learned that the scorer's parents had passed away and he lived alone. She was moved, as their life stories were so similar.

After returning to the educated youth site, Su Qingmeng washed up first. He was covered in dust and his clothes were dirty. After washing and changing his clothes, he lay down on the kang to rest.

She was too tired, with sore waist and legs. She didn't want to go up the mountain anymore and just wanted to lie down.

Zhou Wenxi came to call her, and she said, "I'll take a day off. I'm too tired today. I'll go collect firewood tomorrow." Zhou Wenxi expressed her understanding and went to the front yard to meet up with other educated youth.

Su Qingmeng rested for a while, then took advantage of the fact that no one was across from her to boil a pot of water and pretend that she had cooked. She returned to her room, closed the door, drew the curtains, and entered the space directly.

She had a good dinner, took a bath, and felt alive again.

After putting away the clothes and quilts that had been hung out to dry, Su Qingmeng went out of the space to read for half an hour.

It was only seven o'clock, and she found the cloth brought by the original owner and made a set of long-sleeved clothes and pants to wear to work. The original owner's other clothes were made of better materials, and it would be a waste to wear them to the fields.

It was quite late when Su Qingmeng finished making the clothes. She went to bed, harvested the crops from the farm and put them into the warehouse, continued to plant sugarcane, and loaded the products from the workshop into the warehouse. She replenished the raw materials, tidied up a little, and fell asleep.
