Chapter 23 Assassination
The bonfire made people's cheeks red. After Chen Yu finished eating the potatoes, she stood up and walked back to the tiger tent.
The soldier reported: "Your Highness, Shi Yu wants to see you for something."
Xie Tingzhou was just about to undress, but when he heard this, he tied his belt back on. "What's the matter?"
Chen Yu said outside the tent: "General Shen's children are not around, I want to keep vigil for General Shen."
"Okay."
In order to preserve the body, there was no charcoal basin lit in the funeral tent, and the tent was as frozen as an ice cellar.
Her tears had dried up long ago and she could not cry anymore. She knelt in the tent all night and sneaked out of the tent before dawn.
The snow in Yanliang Pass stopped for a few days and then started falling again. It was still desolate a few days ago, but now the streets have returned to their pre-war appearance.
The secret guard followed closely behind Shen Yu, watching her turning left and right in the alley, always keeping a distance from her.
When we reached a fork in the road, the person disappeared in a flash.
Chen Yu walked on the street for a long time before she tiptoed into the backyard of a house.
There were people waiting in the room, and when they saw Chen Yu, Hong Qiao and Lu Yao all kneeled in front of her.
"Miss, I have failed to live up to your trust. Please punish me."
Hongqiao and Luyao split their troops into two groups, one went to Hezhou to report the news, and the other went to Ganzhou Prefecture to raise food, but they were still one step too late.
Chen Yu's eyes were filled with tears, "You have done a great job."
Hongqiao cried and said, "If I could deliver the food faster, the general and the others..."
Chen Yu knew this was impossible, "No matter how early, they won't let you into the city."
Hongqiao wiped her tears and asked, "What are you going to do now, young lady?"
Chen Yu said: "There are too many suspicious points in this battle. It is definitely not something that a mere military supervisor can control. There must be someone behind Liang Jianfang. I must catch him."
There was murderous intent in her eyes, which was frightening.
"Let's follow the lady." They said in unison.
Chen Yu shook her head and said, "I am now in the army of Beilin Prince Xie Tingzhou. He will escort Liang Jianfang to the capital soon. I have to find a way to stay by his side."
"What instructions does the young lady have?" Hongqiao asked.
Chen Yu said, "My brother borrowed grain from Ganzhou City. You guys should pay it back for me."
Hong Qiao was indignant, "Why should we return it? The general and the young master fought on the front line to defend Yanliang Pass and protect the people inside the pass, but they closed the city and refused to open it, forcing people to death."
Chen Yu understood this truth.
But she didn't want Chen Zhao to go on the road with debt on his shoulders. Even if he had to leave, he had to leave with a clear conscience.
"I think
Let him go cleanly."
When these words were spoken, Hongqiao and Luyao's eyes turned red.
Such a handsome and elegant person as the young general ended up with no remains left.
Chen Yu sneaked out and didn't stay for long. After explaining her business, she turned back.
The gloom of the past few days weighed on everyone's heart in the military camp, but the scene in the city was quite different. The common people only cared about the little world in front of them, as long as there was no chaos in their homes and no one was starving to death, they didn't care about their country at all.
People are hurrying on the street, shouting and hawking their wares, and the air is filled with the breath of life.
The tea stall was full of people, all discussing the battle at Yanliang Pass a few days ago.
An old man said, "It's so tragic. You didn't see the scene. The bodies were spread all the way to the horizon."
"I heard that the military supervisor and the governor of the prefecture have been captured by Prince Beilin."
The old man said, "What's the point of calling you adults? You're just people with unstable brains."
Shen Yu approached, asked for a cup of tea, and interrupted everyone while they were chatting, "Isn't there still a garrison in Ganzhou Prefecture? That garrison is also closed, so how come he is fine?"
"You don't know this, do you?" The old man looked at him and said, "Are you from another country?"
Chen Yu said, "Yes, I am here to bury the bodies of my father and elder brother."
Everyone looked at her with sympathy.
The old man sat down next to him with a tea bowl in hand and whispered, "The garrison commander of Ganzhou City is no ordinary person. His sister married the cousin of the King of Beilin. They are related. How could the prince touch him? He is one of our own."
Shen Yu tightly grasped the tea bowl, "Father-in-law knows a lot of information."
The old man shook his head and said, "I am just a vegetable buyer, supplying vegetables to the provincial government office on weekdays. I just heard some gossip, but I didn't hear that the garrison commander of Ganzhou is a relative of the King of Beilin. It was the garrison commander himself who said it in the brothel, and it has long been spread throughout Ganzhou City."
…
As it got darker, bonfires were lit again in the camp.
After the secret guard reported to Xie Tingzhou about the embarrassing situation, a guard came to report:
"Your Highness, the Ganzhou garrison is here to see you."
Xie Tingzhou put down what he was holding, "It just so happens that even if he doesn't come to invite me, I will go find him."
A group of people entered the city, with two rows of guards on horseback on the side, protecting a carriage in the middle, and stopped in a small courtyard.
The guard lifted the curtain and said, "Your Highness, we are here."
Xie Tingzhou got out of the carriage and looked.
This courtyard is located in a remote area and the walls are not built high. It is the residence of an ordinary family.
Xie Tingzhou smiled. It was indeed very simple. It was not easy for Hu Xingwang to find a courtyard and pretend to be an honest official just to invite him.
The guards all lowered their heads, because they had been with Xie Tingzhou for long enough to know that if he smiled like that, someone was going to be in trouble.
The lights were on in the courtyard, but the gate was closed.
The guard went to call the door, but there was no response after knocking for a long time.
There was a faint smell of blood wafting in the wind.
"No!" Xifeng immediately ordered: "Break the door!"
The gate of the courtyard was kicked open and the guards rushed in in a well-trained manner. There were four rooms on the east and west sides of the courtyard. The guards went in and searched around and came out quickly.
"Your Highness, he is still alive."
In the west wing, Hu Xingwang was tied to a stool.
Xie Tingzhou only took a glance and then looked away in disgust, "Someone is ruining my business."
Xi Feng said: "The person should not have gone far. I will send someone to chase him immediately."
“No need.” Xie Tingzhou stopped him, “You can’t catch up.”
With a "gurgle", Hu Xingwang spat out a mouthful of blood and opened his lips as if he wanted to speak.
Xie Tingzhou ignored him and asked, "Have the garrison troops been handed over?"
Xifeng said: "It's already healed."
"Then there's no need to save him." Xie Tingzhou said.
This means that Hu Xingwang would neither be saved nor killed, and would be allowed to hold on to his last breath and die in pain.
"Your Highness, here is a signed confession."
The evidence was placed on the table, pressed by a bloody dagger. The guard presented it to Xie Tingzhou, but Xie Tingzhou did not take it and quickly scanned it with his eyes.
It was Hu Xingwang's confession, in which he frankly admitted how he was threatened by Liang Jianfang and closed the city during the war. He also revealed the amount of money he had embezzled and accepted in bribes over the years and where the money had gone.
After reading it, Xie Tingzhou said, "Put it away. It will be useful when we go to Beijing."
The guards found several more bodies around the yard, and they were probably the guards left nearby by Hu Xingwang for protection.
On the way back, Xifeng followed on horseback.
“Your Highness, that man is very skilled. Almost all of Hu Xingwang’s men were killed with one strike. He is not an ordinary person.”
Xie Tingzhou leaned against the wall of the car and closed his eyes to pretend to sleep. "They are either enemies or allies. The means used were a bit extreme, but at least they knew to keep a backup plan."
The person must be killed, but the confession must be kept. It seems that this person has a brain.
Xi Feng said solemnly: "Could it be some chivalrous warrior?"
Xie Tingzhou half opened his eyes and sneered, "The ways of the heroes in the martial arts world are not so wild."
Xifeng nodded, "That's true."
Xie Tingzhou said: "There is not a single piece of intact skin on Hu Xingwang's body. If there was no grudge, I'm afraid he wouldn't have done such a thing."
If it's a grudge, then the range is too large and it's hard to identify the target.
