Chapter 22: Testing
Outside the city wall in the north, the night sky was illuminated red by the flames, and a faint smell of burning could be smelled in the wind.
Xie Tingzhou was followed by a guard, and then two generals wearing soft armor.
Chen Yu had heard that Beilin Prince Xie Tingzhou had two very powerful deputy generals around him, so they must be those two.
Chen Yu was brought into the tent, but the two lieutenants did not follow in. Only Xie Tingzhou and a guard were in the tent.
"Raise your head!" Xie Tingzhou said in a cold voice.
Chen Yu slowly raised her head and her eyes met Xie Tingzhou's. That gaze seemed to have substance, as if it could dissect a person.
But Chen Yu did not hide, she looked back intently, because she knew that if she showed her weakness, what she said afterwards would be discounted in Xie Tingzhou's ears.
Xie Tingzhou looked at her.
He is not tall, with a very small frame and face, and a somewhat dark skin, but he has a pair of very beautiful eyes.
Without his armor, the man looked much more frail than he had imagined.
Thinking of this, Xie Tingzhou couldn't help but be slightly stunned. He actually used the word "weak" to describe a soldier who could chop off the head of a Xijue man with one sword.
If this is still called weak, then there are few brave people in the army.
He collected his thoughts and asked, "On October 25, Shen Zhongan sent troops to attack the North Camp of Xijue, and the South Camp of Xijue was unable to return to support him. Why didn't you take advantage of the victory to pursue him?"
"Because it's snowing, the soldiers of the Great Zhou are not good at fighting in the snow, so they can only retreat back to the camp first." Shen Yu said.
Xie Tingzhou sat down, resting his arm on the armrest, and continued to ask: "Did Shen Zhongan find any spies in the army?"
"We found out," Chen Yu said, "so we temporarily changed the plan before the troops were dispatched on the 25th. The original plan was to raid the Xijue South Camp."
"You're among them?"
"I followed the Major General to attack the North Camp and burned their food supplies. After the enemy was annihilated, the Major General rushed to the South Camp to support the old general. I and two thousand light cavalry were responsible for transporting some of the food supplies back."
Xie Tingzhou nodded slowly. This was consistent with what he knew.
Asking these questions is just a starting point to confirm how much truth there is in what this guy named Shi Yu says.
"Who do you think is the traitor?"
Chen Yu shook her head, "I'm not sure, or I'm not sure if Liang Jianfang is the only traitor."
Xie Tingzhou lowered his eyes slightly, looked at her hand hanging at her side, and clenched his fist.
The joints of his skull were stretched white.
"Liang Jianfang has been detained by me. After the matter in Ganzhou is settled, he will be taken to Beijing to await trial. Do you have anything else to report?"
Shen Yu lowered her eyes and stared at the ground, "General Shen sent several urgent letters to Shengjing, but received no response."
She couldn't say too much because she wasn't sure whether the person in front of her was an enemy or a friend.
Xie Tingzhou said: "This matter involves too many people. Whether the urgent delivery reaches Shengjing is one thing, and if it reaches the Ministry of War, who suppresses it is another matter."
There was a black jade ring stuck on his slender finger, which made his skin look like jade. He turned the ring twice and slowly leaned over. The shadow under the light instantly enveloped Shen Yu.
"You don't trust me." He looked at her and said slowly, not questioning her.
Yes, he is right.
She really didn't trust him now, or it could be said that she didn't know who was trustworthy now.
Xie Tingzhou arrived just in time. To lead the troops north from Beilinfeng, even if they were to march quickly with light equipment, they would have to set out ten days in advance in order to arrive at the last moment.
In the previous life, when Xie Tingzhou arrived with the Qingyun Guards, it was already several days after the Xijue city of Ganzhou was breached and massacred.
The question is, how could he predict the future this time?
Could he be part of this?
Xie Tingzhou's eyes are like an eagle's, and he has super strong insight.
When confronting such a person, the most unwise thing to do is to try to deal with him in a clever way.
“Your Highness,” Chen Yu said calmly, “I have no allies, so I dare not trust anyone.”
Xie Tingzhou leaned back, his lips curved slightly, "Obviously I have more chips than you, and you have much less to lose than I do."
Chen Yu pursed her lips. Yes, what else can't be lost?
She was almost bewitched by his words.
Xie Tingzhou was like a casual eagle, forcing his prey into a corner but not launching a fierce attack.
"You still have a lot of time to think about it before the matter in Ganzhou is over, Shi, Yu."
The name that came out of her mouth made Shen Yu's heart tremble. Just now she really felt that she had become his prey. He was not in a hurry to close the net, but watched her walk in willingly step by step.
"Go down." Xie Tingzhou spoke without waiting for her to speak.
Chen Yu stood up and walked out, her eyes inadvertently sweeping across the tent.
When she saw a clothes hanger with an upturned head, she slowed down her steps.
On the hanger was an ink-colored robe with dark cloud patterns embroidered on the hem. And the robe was missing a sleeve.
She pinched her cuffs calmly.
Was that piece of cloth originally Xie Tingzhou's sleeve? But how did it end up in her hands?
Xie Tingzhou looked up and smiled, "Are you asking why the sleeves are missing from your clothes? But I want to ask why you call me dad."
She called him daddy? When?
Chen Yu looked at him in shock, and happened to see the smile on Xie Tingzhou's face.
When he smiled, he looked much softer. He was such a sharp and cold person, but when he smiled he looked a bit dissolute and unruly.
Chen Yu went out, and Xie Tingzhou's smile gradually faded. "Send someone to follow him. He should have some inside information."
Xifeng accepted the order, "Yes, Your Highness."
There were two bonfires burning outside the tent, and several soldiers were sitting around them eating roasted potatoes.
Seeing Chen Yu coming out, Chang Heng waved at her, "Come here."
Shen Yu walked over, and Chang Heng threw a hot potato to her. She quickly caught it, wrapped it in her sleeve and held it in her hand.
Chang Heng looked her up and down, "Where did you learn this skill?"
"I learned it from the young general." Chen Yu said.
"Come and sit down," Chang Heng took a bite of the potato, which was so hot that he groaned, "I saved your life, so come and report to me when you are better."
The soldiers nearby joked, "General Chang is starting to snatch people so early?"
"What do you know?" Chang Heng pushed the man, "Do you understand that I value talent?"
He turned his head to look at Chen Yu, and suddenly reached out to put his arm around her shoulders and patted her, "Tsk tsk, you're too thin, you need to eat more, do you want me to grill some meat for you?"
Chen Yu froze completely, and silently moved half a step to the side, "General Chang, if you can still eat barbecue, then eat it yourself. I can't eat it."
After she said that, everyone lost their appetite.
There are too many corpses to deal with, otherwise once winter is over and the weather gets warmer, it will easily cause an epidemic.
Some were buried on the spot, and the rest were burned. Some soldiers were frozen together with the Western Jue people, so they had to be burned together. The fire burned for several days and was still not extinguished. During these days, the wind was always filled with the smell of burnt meat.
