Chapter 47: Waking up from a nightmare is the morning
Princess Kunxing boarded the carriage, accompanied by Liu Gongzheng and Ruyi. Flanked by twenty guards, the eunuchs drove the carriage straight to Misty Rain Tower. While Misty Rain Tower wasn't far from her home, the princess's outings were subject to formalities and ceremony. Therefore, she preferred to avoid going out whenever possible. Her husband was ill today, leaving Princess Kunxing incredibly anxious. She didn't mind the hassle and ordered Liu Gongzheng to prepare the carriage and swiftly depart.
Arriving at the Misty Rain Tower, the princess got out of the carriage. Xiao Wu saw this and wanted to go in to report the news, but Liu Gongzheng gave the guard a look, asking him to stop Xiao Wu. The princess came into the yard and smelled a bloody smell. She immediately felt that something bad had happened. She hurried upstairs and found Li Sihong there wiping Zhao Xiaofei's head with a towel, while Jinbao was cleaning the house.
When the two saw the princess come in, they immediately knelt down and said, "This servant greets Her Highness!"
"Tell me, what happened to the prince consort? What happened?" Kunxing asked in a cold voice.
Jinbao could tell something was wrong with the tone of the words. Usually the princess would say "I am this or that", but today she used "this palace" for the first time. And judging from the princess's expression, if she didn't tell the truth, her life might be in danger. So he said, "Replying to the princess! The prince consort encountered an assassin, fought with him for a while and killed him."
"The prince consort was stabbed by an assassin, right?" Kunxing quickly lifted the quilt to check.
"Princess! The prince consort was not stabbed by the assassin. He was just frightened after killing the assassin and vomited continuously just now. Later he started to have a high fever." Jinbao said.
"Why is the prince consort's body so hot? Go and urge Doctor Hu to come quickly!" Princess Kunxing said anxiously.
"Here he comes! Doctor Hu is here!" Xiao Wen said downstairs. Xiao Wen went upstairs with Doctor Hu. Doctor Hu happened to be at home today. When he heard that Prince Consort Zhao was ill, he quickly brought his medicine box and followed Xiao Wen up.
As soon as he went upstairs and saw so many people in the room, he frowned. He bowed to the princess and said, "Your Highness, I greet you!"
"Hello, Doctor Hu. Please take a look at the prince consort as soon as possible." Princess Kunxing said.
"Princess! There are too many people here, just leave one person behind!" said Doctor Hu.
"Liu Gongzheng, you stay here, everyone else go down!" Kunxing ordered.
"Yes!" Everyone agreed in unison and retreated.
Doctor Hu, noticing everyone had left, stepped forward to examine Zhao Xiaofei's eyelids. He resumed his pulse and, after a moment, bowed and said, "Princess, your husband was frightened beyond measure. Furthermore, he had a strong internal fire, which was now ignited, leading to his high fever. I will prescribe a prescription, and I guarantee he will wake up tomorrow."
"Thank you, Doctor Hu!" said Princess Kunxing.
Doctor Hu wrote a prescription, and the princess asked Xiao Wen to go to Doctor Hu's house to get the medicine. Liu Gongzheng saw Doctor Hu walking away and said to the princess, "Your Highness, the assassination of the prince consort is no small matter. Can you report it to Shuntian Prefecture?"
Princess Kunxing didn't know whether to inform Shuntian Mansion. She had never experienced anything like this before and was unsure what to do. Liu Gongzheng then said, "Your Highness, I think there's something fishy about that maid named Li. I've heard that Li was once the top prostitute at Misty Rain Tower. Later, she contracted the plague, and the Prince Consort was kind enough to give her medicine to save her. She's been staying at the Prince Consort's mansion ever since."
"So what?" Kunxing asked.
"Princess, do you think that the prince consort encountered an assassin here? I heard that this was her former residence! I heard that the prince consort liked the feng shui here and wanted to buy the Misty Rain Tower, but the maid surnamed Li refused to sell it to the prince consort. It was not until she entered the prince consort's mansion that the Misty Rain Tower came into his hands. What do you think, is it that the maid surnamed Li is holding a grudge and colluding with insiders and outsiders to kill the prince consort and take back the house deed?" Liu Gongzheng said.
"How could such a thing happen? But I don't think Miss Li is an ungrateful person. Her husband saved her, so how could she harm him?" Kunxing said.
"Princess! You may know a person's face but not his heart, so you'd better be careful. And look, these good things, princess, you have seen them in the palace. This is a glass mirror, this should be liquid foundation, and this is lipstick. I think these are all sent by the prince consort, right? Even if this maid surnamed Li is not the one who colluded with the assassin, she is still quite pretty. And the prince consort is so..., don't you think..." Liu Gongzheng said hesitantly.
Princess Kunxing interrupted, "Stop talking!" She hadn't noticed the items on the table when she first entered the room, but after Liu Gongzheng's reminder, she finally noticed these items unique to the Prince Consort's residence. Despite her youth, the princess was still a woman. Jealousy was still there. She didn't believe Miss Li was ungrateful, much less that she was colluding with the assassins. But she was absolutely convinced that she and the Prince Consort were having an affair. Considering how the Prince Consort hadn't touched her in recent days, and considering all these things, she wouldn't believe the claim that there was nothing between the Prince Consort and Miss Li, even if she was beaten to death.
"What do you mean by pretty? I think she's prettier than me. Maybe the prince consort has already been with her..." The princess pursed her lips and felt like crying. She tried hard to control her anger and jealousy. She didn't want others to say that she was a jealous woman.
"Why not let me step forward and spend some money to send this Li guy away. So as to avoid future..." Liu Gong was about to say something, and the princess of course understood.
"Let's wait until the prince consort wakes up. Send someone to keep an eye on her!" Kunxing said.
"Yes! I obey your command!" Liu Gongzheng smiled proudly in his heart.
The princess sat by the bed, watching her husband lying unconscious, tears streaming down her face. She was filled with worry, jealousy, and hatred for Li Sihong. It seemed the prince consort had known Li Sihong for a long time. Perhaps the prince consort had never considered marrying her, and all this was arranged by my father. Why did my father want me to marry him when he knew that the prince consort and Miss Li had already developed a secret crush on each other?
