Lu Xingjian reached out and touched her hair, saying with certainty, "Yes, let's go."
Su Wanwan turned to look at Xiao Bin and the others.
They were disheveled and surrounded by the Imperial Guards.
Lu Xingjian knew she was worried that the guards would be harassed.
"Just bring them back to the capital, and once the treason case is investigated, they will be released."
"Make sure these people at the inn are well taken care of," Lu Xingjian instructed his attendant. "After the inn is rebuilt, send the account books and profits to the Su family."
Su Wanwan no longer had the courage to disobey him, and followed him into the carriage.
The carriage slowly made its way towards the capital.
A lantern was hanging inside the car.
Su Wanwan sat upright in the side seat, not saying a word, trying her best to make people ignore her presence.
Lu Xingjian looked at her quietly for a long time, and finally pulled her onto his lap and held her tightly in his arms.
His chin rested against her hair, gently stroking it, occasionally kissing it.
It's like holding a lost treasure that has been found again.
Su Wanwan remained motionless, like a puppet, letting him hold her.
He said gently, "It was my oversight that caused you to suffer."
The person in my arms did not react.
"This won't happen again, okay? Don't be angry."
silence.
Only silence.
Lu Xingjian lifted her face, gently stroking her cheek with his thumb, which was adorned with a ring, his eyes filled with tenderness and affection.
"From now on, we'll live in Xiaoyuan, and no one will bully you anymore."
Su Wanwan finally moved.
She clenched her hands, and after a long while, she said, "I'm a jinx."
"You are not."
"They say I am."
A shadow fell over Lu Xingjian's eyes. "I'll handle this. It'll just take some time."
She finally looked up at him, her eyes filled with a distant, unapproachable air: "You will be cursed and implicated."
Lu Xingjian pressed her face against the crook of his neck and held her waist tightly, as if he wanted to embed her into his body.
"Won't."
After a long silence, he said in a low voice, "It's my fault for dragging you down."
Su Wanwan's eyes slowly filled with tears.
The grievances and bitterness that had been building up in my heart finally found an outlet.
Tears soaked his neck.
"Forgive my selfishness, Wanwan, I can't live without you."
His voice was hoarse and tired, very low, like a whisper.
Neither of them moved or spoke again, as if they were asleep.
Lu Xingjian was really asleep.
He was indeed a little tired after two days of intense concentration without closing his eyes.
Su Wanwan, however, kept her eyes open.
What good would it do to go back to Beijing?
A complex and complicated situation.
A relationship that cannot be openly discussed.
...
As the carriage approached the capital, its speed decreased.
Lu Xingjian woke up and moved his stiff limbs slightly, but he still couldn't bear to let go of her in his arms.
Looking down at her, I saw that she still had her eyes open, and asked softly, "Are you sleepy?"
Su Wanwan gently shook her head.
So soft and obedient.
He gently ruffled her hair, his voice still sleepy and tender: "Wanwan, I dreamt that we got married."
Su Wanwan's body stiffened.
"My great-grandmother told me to treat you well and not to bully you," Lu Xingjian murmured softly.
Su Wanwan reminded him in a low voice, "She passed away three years ago."
Zhou was their guardian and protector.
She never asked the old man to grant her and Lu Xingjian a marriage decree.
In his final years, the old man's health deteriorated, and he devoted his remaining energy to maintaining order in the court.
She couldn't bear to trouble the old man with her own private matters.
Lu Xingjian kissed her hair: "These were her last words."
Su Wanwan was surprised and looked up at his face, wanting to confirm whether what he said was true or false.
However.
The carriage suddenly shook violently and came to a stop.
Lu Xingjian reacted quickly, picking up Su Wanwan and throwing her into the carriage.
Ta-da!
The carriage was struck violently, and its exterior was riddled with arrows.
Fortunately, the carriage was specially made and covered with refined iron, so the arrows were unable to penetrate it.
Shouts came from outside the carriage: "There's an ambush!"
There was also the sound of horses neighing.
Bang!
The distant roar of cannons could be heard.
Su Wanwan was stunned and disoriented, but she saw Lu Xingjian's unusually excited face.
Like a wild beast that has smelled blood, he becomes invigorated.
He whispered in her ear, "Are you scared?"
"It's alright." Su Wanwan calmed down instead, and her senses became very sharp.
At times like these, fear is of no use whatsoever.
"Wanwan is such a good girl." Lu Xingjian's eyes were unusually bright, and his voice was calm and composed. "Just stay close to me."
After an unknown amount of time, the clattering sound from the carriage finally stopped.
Hurried footsteps could be heard.
A male voice reported: "Master, there is an ambush in the houses by the roadside. We must evacuate the main road first!"
"good."
Lu Xingjian pulled a thick, heavy cloak from the storage compartment and wrapped it around Su Wanwan before leading her off the carriage.
He held her in his arms and followed the guards quietly into a building by the roadside.
A man with a hooked nose and deep-set eyes reported:
"The procession entering the city was divided into three sections: one inside the city, one inside the barbican, and our section outside the city."
"The firepower is mainly concentrated inside the city and the barbican, which has bought us some time. Now we need to hold out until reinforcements arrive."
Lu Xingjian's face was serious: "Are the cannons aimed at the section inside the city?"
"Yes." The man with the hooked nose looked grave. "I'm afraid they're in grave danger."
