Chapter 13
Lin Wan was waiting for Huang Qiangqiang's response, but she heard him awkwardly change the subject: "Sister Wanwan, you were at a party just now. This skirt is so pretty."
Lin Wan spoke in a weird Cantonese dialect, resisting the urge to hold her forehead and responded, "Chen Yu won't break his bones while walking." She glanced at the obvious wound on Chen Yu's face and his left hand in a plaster cast, then turned to Huang Qiangqiang and forced a smile.
"If you don't tell me the process, then what is the purpose of calling me here?" She has tried to slow down her tone, hoping to influence the heart of this middle school boy.
"Because my mother asked me to go home." Huang Qiangqiang answered aggrievedly, with an expression that he followed Lin Wan's lead.
Lin Wan: “…”
This reason was so reasonable that it made the panic she felt when she received the call disappear.
She thought she fainted: Chen Yu’s life was on the verge of death and he urgently needed a blood transfusion (this is how idol dramas are filmed).
Actually fainted: the effect of the surgical anesthetic has not worn off.
"Then you go first." Lin Wan gave up on treatment and decided to ask Chen Yu directly after he woke up. This would be more direct and avoid information loss during communication - she had doubts about Huang Qiangqiang's communication ability.
Huang Qiangqiang shook his head and glanced at Lin Wan with some timidity.
Lin Wan quickly softened his expression and repeated his original words as if coaxing a child.
Huang Qiangqiang continued to shake his head, and the metal parts on his neck clanged and clattered against each other, as if he had accidentally walked into a concert.
After Lin Wan slowly blinked three times, Huang Qiangqiang finally spoke.
"My mother is on her way."
A weak mother will inevitably have a strong child; and a strong mother will inevitably have a weak child.
The moment he saw Huang Qiangqiang's mother, Lin Wan came to a conclusion in his heart.
Destined to meet, no matter how far apart they are, this beautiful woman is the one who argued with the taxi driver at the police station last time.
—What a bad fate. Lin Wan thought to herself how small the world is. Last time, this mother was busy going home to cook for her child, and now she has encountered this.
Shen Meizhen's gaze swept over her disappointing son and landed on Lin Wan, who was wearing an evening gown in the ward. She tossed her curly hair back and walked over to Lin Wan with a menacing look.
That momentum, that posture, accompanied by the "tapping" sound of her small high-heeled leather shoes on the floor, seemed to make the old man next to her startled. With a "whoosh", he supported himself with his hands, picked up the shelf next to him and pulled up the middle window.
He looked both embarrassed and miserable.
Lin Wan was a little afraid to speak. Facing such a powerful and individualistic woman, she felt a little too weak. She even began to think about how to apologize in a sincere way.
But the next second: "Girl, you look so beautiful in this outfit."
With the same accent as Huang Qiangqiang, Lin Wan's apology came to her lips but she refused to say it.
Ha. Lin Wan was stunned.
"You are pretty too." Lin Wan complimented her sincerely, using the same accent.
With big waves, tight clothes, and makeup, Shen Meizhen had obviously dressed up carefully to go out, just like the last time she saw her at the police station.
"Alas, I'm old. I can't compare to you young girls." Shen Meizhen waved her hand nonchalantly. "It was quite awkward last time. I was jumping around all alone. I didn't expect to meet you here."
Lin Wan was speechless and could only smile and nod. She liked people with bold personalities, like Jiang Nuo.
"How is Xiaoyu? I was hiding something when I called you. If you had told me earlier, you wouldn't have been scolded." Shen Meizhen slapped Huang Qiangqiang on the shoulder.
Huang Qiangqiang's thin shoulders shrank even more, trembling like yellow leaves in autumn. He said hesitantly, "Brother Yu, you're not allowed to tell me. I sneaked out to make the call."
He felt extremely wronged. He clearly wanted to keep his promise, but in the end he ended up pleasing neither side.
"Xiaoyu won't let me talk about it." Shen Meizhen frowned, her newly wrinkled eyebrows: "It's related to his family again."
Home?
Lin Wan caught the key word. Isn't Chen Yu an orphan? Where does he get his home?
Huang Qiangqiang glanced at Lin Wan, humming and nodding.
"I told you, you must tell our neighbors about this kind of thing first." Shen Meizhen was obviously angry again.
"My brother said the family situation is too complicated and he doesn't want to implicate us." Huang Qiangqiang spoke almost in a whisper.
She was clearly trying very hard to lower her voice, but the ward was so small that not only did Lin Wan hear it, she even felt that the old man by the window could hear it clearly.
Shen Meizhen was dissatisfied: "Your voice should be clear, what's the point of hesitating?" Classic quote from a parent.
"Brother is awake. You tell me, I'll go call the doctor." Huang Qiangqiang was extremely proactive. Even if the call bell could do the job, he would happily go there himself.
“Aunt Shen, I told Huang Qiangqiang not to tell you.” The patient on the bed finally woke up to the secret and loud voices of the three people.
The scars on his face made him look like a piece of fragile porcelain, fragile and seemingly easy to break.
But Lin Wan knew that this was not the case.
Shen Meizhen seemed to know his temper, and didn't say anything to him, but shook her head.
"Hey, when you want to tell us, you will tell us naturally." She seemed to be comforting Chen Yu and also seemed to be talking to herself.
"Okay, there's no place for us to sit here, so let's not be a third wheel. Let your girlfriend stay and keep you company." Shen Meizhen came and left in a hurry. She turned around and pulled Huang Qiangqiang, who had just entered, out of the ward.
Lin Wan remained speechless and choked. The cowardly old man by the window finally dared to open the curtains a crack and said to Lin Wan, "My husband is like this too, a little strong, but I like him. It's a pity that he didn't live as long as I did!"
He uttered the last "ah" in a long tone, as if he wanted to recall his entire life in one word. After saying this, the old man smiled, not in a timid way but in a mature way.
"Seize the time while you are young." After he said that, he closed the curtain again, looking like a hermit.
Lin Wan could no longer laugh, but Chen Yu lowered his eyes and looked thoughtful.
Lin Wan guessed that he was really touched. People who fall in love are not very rational, and love must be emotional.
After the nurse examined Chen Yu, she gave him a few words of advice and left.
It seemed as if they were the only two people left in the space. The light from the hospital's incandescent lamp seemed particularly harsh, shining directly on Chen Yu's face, creating a small shadow.
"Tell me, what's going on?" Lin Wan spoke directly as always, without any preparation or beating around the bush. He got straight to the point, and his straightforwardness seemed sincere.
There was no need for her to dwell on something that was completely false.
"It's not a big deal." Chen Yu curled his lips and smiled, looking very forced.
He blocked everything out, as if smiling would make all the real hurt disappear. Lin Wan couldn't stand his smile.
His smile even affected the wound on his face, and the wound, which had not healed yet, quickly broke and began to bleed.
In an instant, Lin Wan suddenly felt that all his inquiries and words of concern were so pale and powerless.
She was clearly aware that no matter how intimate Chen Yu's behavior towards her was, even if he liked to lean on her shoulder.
There is still a thick gap between them. Chen Yu rarely expresses his emotions and is always so calm and at ease.
"You should have told me." Lin Wan finally said it.
"Sister, can you pour me a glass of water?"
With his eyes curved, Chen Yu spoke calmly.
Lin Wan gritted her teeth, then resigned herself to her fate by picking up the kettle and pouring a glass of warm water for Chen Yu. She found a straw, placed it in the cup, and held it to his lips. This was how she had taken care of Jiang Yuexing when they were little.
The same feeling of powerlessness. She was clearly right in front of me, and I could sense her presence with just a stretch of my hand, yet I knew clearly that she was gone. Or rather, the living her now was no longer the same person.
Lin Wan didn't like this.
Just as Chen Yu was about to bite the straw, Lin Wan took it away.
Under the effect of the anesthetic, he raised his eyes blankly, but heard Lin Wan say: "Tell me the truth, otherwise there will be no water to drink." As she spoke, she moved the plastic water cup away from Chen Yu.
Chen Yu laughed so hard that he covered his eyes with his good arm, and his chest was shaking with laughter.
"I was beaten," he said.
Lin Wan curled the corners of her mouth. Could he tell her something she didn't know?
The phone in her hand began to buzz. What was going on today? Why were the calls coming one after another? Lin Wan took a deep breath and glanced at her phone.
Big promise?
Didn’t she go to the second game? Why is she calling me now?
Lin Wan frowned and answered the phone.
"Wanwan, I'm in Jiangzhou Hospital." The voice on the other end sounded particularly weak, and Jiang Nuo almost forced the sound out from his throat.
She was also at Jiangzhou Hospital! The world was so magical that Lin Wan felt a little dizzy.
She almost floated and asked, "What's wrong with you?"
"Puffer fish is poisonous." Jiang Nuo said word by word. The pain was so unforgettable that she kept gasping for breath after she finished speaking.
“Almost everyone who has eaten fugu is here now.”
It turns out their second game was in the hospital, Lin Wan thought expressionlessly.
"Wanwan, where are you now?" Jiang Nuo said, coughing weakly.
"I'm also at Jiangzhou Hospital." Lin Wan was silent for a moment, but still answered.
"Oh my god, didn't you eat puffer fish?" Jiang Nuo was shocked: "Could it be that everyone who smells the puffer fish is poisoned?" Her tone sounded extremely flustered.
"Where are you? We should be in Area 1." The sound of fabric rubbing came from the other end of the phone, and it sounded like Jiang Nuo sat up and started looking.
"Don't move, I'll come find you." Lin Wan said hurriedly: "I'm not poisoned, something happened to Chen Yu."
The person on the other side breathed a sigh of relief: "That's good. I'm in the infusion hall on the first floor. Come find me soon Wanwan." The second half of the sentence was obviously a way of being nice.
Lin Wan glanced at Chen Yu across from him and replied, "Wait a moment. I'll take care of things here first and come back to you right away."
With that, she hung up the phone and looked at the person who sat up in front of her.
"Keep talking, Xiaoyu." She said to Chen Yu, "Otherwise no one will take care of you." She then raised her cell phone and spoke threateningly.
