Chapter 3

Chapter 3

At school, the bell for the second class rang, and the students stood up and moved around, laughing and pushing their way out of the classroom.

Gu Yuan still kept her hands on the desk. Even when Du Jiajia poked her, she didn't react. "What important life event are you thinking about?"

Gu Yuan sighed: "I think my mother is hiding something from me"

Du Jiajia played with the pen cap and said, "This is totally normal. What adults don't hide things? My mom still doesn't tell me where she puts her New Year's money."

"It's different..." Gu Yuan tugged at the zipper of his school uniform, his voice muffled, "I've been feeling really anxious these past few days."

"Then you should go to the hospital for a check-up, don't just speculate on your own."

Du Jiajia closed the pen cap and suddenly waved to Lin An who had just approached: "Sister An, does your mother usually tell you everything?"

Lin An paused, holding his textbook. "Why are you asking this all of a sudden?"

Du Jiajia twirled her pen and pointed at Gu Yuan, who was frowning at the side. "Her mother is hiding something from her, and it's making her very anxious."

Lin An: "It's normal for an adult to have her own considerations. She didn't tell you, perhaps because she didn't want you to worry. You should accept her kindness."

"Did you hear that..." Du Jiajia nudged Gu Yuan with her elbow, then suddenly looked at Lin An, "But Sister An, your last sentence was a bit strange."

Lin An asked in a cold tone: "Is there?"

"It sounds like a grammatical error. Sister An, you're the top student in the class, how can you still speak with grammatical errors?"

Lin An didn't explain anything. He just nodded and turned back to his seat. Gu Yuan looked at them and saw that they were silent. Jia Jia was still chattering on.

But she didn't have the heart to reply her. She still felt something was wrong, and the premonition in her heart had never been so strong.

Her mother must be hiding something from her, and it might be something big.

The more I thought about it, the more uneasy I felt; even the school bell seemed jarring.

She pushed the door open with a heavy heart, and the aroma of food hit her face. She closed the door with her backhand, walked to the dining table, looked at the table full of dishes, and tentatively asked: "Mom, are there any guests coming to our house today?"

"No, I made it especially for you." As he spoke, Gu Nian brought out another plate of spicy tofu.

"Why did you suddenly cook so many dishes today? We can't finish them all."

Gu Nian picked up a piece of meat with chopsticks and put it to Gu Yuan's mouth: "I thought about it and made more for you. If you can't finish it, we can talk about it later. Why don't you try it first?"

Gu Yuan opened his mouth and ate it, "Delicious"

"As long as it tastes good, I'm a little rushed today. I was worried that it wouldn't be cooked enough and wouldn't taste good."

"mom…"

"Go wash your hands quickly, or the food will get cold." Gu Nianyi interrupted her without even looking up.

At the dinner table, Gu Yuan kept watching his mother eat. Gu Nian's hand, which was picking up the food, paused for a moment, then quickly put the meat into her bowl as if nothing had happened. "Eat your meal well. Why are you looking at me? The food is getting cold."

Gu Yuan clenched his chopsticks: "Has anything happened to our family?"

Gu Nian: "It's nothing serious, and even if it is, it's not your turn to worry about it. Study hard and have fun. That's what you should be thinking about."

"Mom, this family only has you and me... If something happens, I can help. Don't underestimate me."

Looking at the child she raised, who looked so determined to help her, Gu Nian smiled. How could he be so adorable? She couldn't bear to let him go.

"It's really okay, don't let your imagination run wild."

"Are you really okay?"

"Yuanyuan, why would I lie to you?"

Gu Nian reached out and rubbed her hair, then suddenly said, "Bring your classmate home tomorrow."

Gu Yuan was stunned for a moment, then shook his head and said, "If you think it's troublesome, forget it."

"It's not a big deal." Gu Nian wiped his hands and said calmly, "I thought about it and felt that it wouldn't be good to keep dragging her along. I just happened to have something I wanted to ask her for help with."

Gu Yuan frowned and asked, "What help can she provide?"

"I just wanted to ask about your school situation."

Gu Yuan curled his lips: "Forget it then."

"I won't ask anymore, okay? Remember to call her over."

Gu Yuan hesitated for a moment, but finally nodded.

The next morning during the morning reading, Gu Yuan came to Lin An's desk and said, "Sister An, my mother wants to invite you to dinner at her home."

Lin An's pen spinning suddenly stopped, the tip of the pen leaving a crooked ink mark on the paper. "So fast?"

"If you're not free, you can come another day. You can come anytime."

"Just eating? Does your mother have something else to do?"

Gu Yuan nodded and whispered, "She wants to ask you for help to find out about my situation at school."

Help, Lin An: "Then today."

"Sister An..." Gu Yuan wanted to say something but was interrupted by Lin An.

Lin An said softly, "Don't worry, I won't say anything bad about you. The teacher will be back soon, you can sit back down."

Gu Yuan felt relieved and just returned to his seat when the Chinese teacher appeared at the classroom door.

She glanced around and slammed the lesson plan in her hand on the podium: "Walking down the entire corridor, your class is the quietest."

"All asleep, huh? So breathless."

As the Chinese teacher's voice fell, the noise in the class became a little louder. She looked around and saw that no one was sleeping, so she left.

After school, when Du Jiajia learned that Lin An was going to Gu Yuan's house, she immediately came over and said, "I want to eat with you too."

Gu Yuan smiled and pushed her: "Okay, let's go."

The two chatted all the way, and Lin An walked quietly beside them and listened. Soon they arrived at Gu Yuan's house.

As soon as the door was pushed open, Gu Nian, wearing an apron, poked her head out from the kitchen, glanced at the three people, and finally stopped at her daughter: "Yuanyuan, go to the supermarket downstairs and buy some beer."

Du Jiajia shook her head: "Auntie, we don't drink."

Gu Nian came over, took out some change from her apron pocket and stuffed it into Gu Yuan's pocket, then looked at Du Jiajia: "This isn't for you to drink. You need it for cooking. You two should go together. Yuanyuan can't carry it alone."

When Du Jiajia heard that it was needed for cooking, she immediately nodded: "Okay"

After the footsteps of Gu Yuan and Du Jiajia completely disappeared in the corridor, Lin An watched Gu Nian walk forward and locked the door.

Gu Nian turned around and asked directly, "What will they do to my daughter?"

"She won't die. Although her existence was a mistake, your fault is not largely due to her."

"Besides, since she already exists, they can't arbitrarily deprive her of this life. The Inspection Department intends to observe her for a period of time. If it is confirmed that she is harmless to the world, she will live."

Gu Nian looked at her coldly: "Swear."

Lin An chuckled: "Swear? Senior, she is not qualified yet."

A weak human being is not worthy of God's oath.

Seeing that Gu Nian was still staring at her, her heart grew colder, but she still tried to reassure her by saying, "What I can tell you is that my mission does not involve killing her, only you."

"But if you correct the rest of your mistakes, I will consult with them."

"Don't say anything else. I won't agree." Gu Nian didn't answer her. "But I will admit my mistakes and accept any punishment."

"I want to ask you for one last favor. Please protect her for a while."

"She is still too young and has not yet developed any strength. There will be dirty things that will haunt her and covet her."

Lin An frowned and refused: "I have been here for a long time."

"I know you are not under their control."

Gu Nian suddenly took a half step forward, ready to kneel on one knee, "This is my last request."

After she finished speaking, her knees had already bent slightly towards the ground, but Lin An stopped her.

"Senior, get up." Lin An turned his eyes away. "I agree."
