After returning from the fields, Mu Yi'an began planning her trip back to her parents' home. In this day and age, returning to one's parents' home wasn't something one could do on a whim; there always had to be a reason.
After searching through the memory bank, I found a good reason: it's the original owner's mother's birthday in a few days, and that's a perfectly valid reason.
Mu Yi'an pondered for a moment what to give as a birthday gift. Thinking back on the gifts she had given before, they were mostly food and clothes, nothing special. She couldn't give anything special this year either, or it would give her away.
Mu Yi'an took out a piece of crimson fabric from the cabinet. It was pure cotton with a subtle pattern, enough to make a dress.
According to the original owner's mother's measurements from her memory, Mu Yi'an cut out a set of clothes.
Without a sewing machine, we could only do things by hand!
Fortunately, Mu Yi'an has fully integrated the original body's memories, and the muscle memory has also been integrated quite well.
With the original owner's memories and Mu Yi'an's skillful assistance, this outfit was completed quite quickly. It was a ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress), with the top reaching slightly above the knee. Since it was for wearing at home, the sleeves were simply cut. Some patterns were embroidered on the cuffs and collar, giving it a rather fashionable look.
"Jiang Shuyun, can you take a look at this for me? What do you think?"
Mu Yi'an asked Jiang Shuyun, who had just entered the room, to take a look, as this guy had rather high aesthetic standards.
"The clothes are finished! You're pretty quick. Watching you sew stitch by stitch, I thought it would take days!"
"I haven't done anything but sewing these past few days, otherwise I wouldn't have had enough time. Take a look and see what you think, I don't know much about clothes."
Mu Yi'an wore sportswear all year round back then—simple, convenient, and comfortable. Mainly, she needed to do experiments, which involved not only the lab but also the fields.
"The color is suitable, and the style is quite classic. However, the subtle pattern on your cuffs and collar is nice and eye-catching. That's impressive! You can even do embroidery?"
"What embroidery do I know? That's done using the cross-stitch method. Even I don't know how to do that. How could I possibly learn it? Back when I was in college, there was a time when cross-stitch was all the rage, and I did it for a while."
Mu Yi'an was relieved. She folded the clothes, wrapped them in cloth, and the birthday present was complete.
"Your life is truly colorful!"
"It's alright, I've experienced hardship, exhaustion, and sweetness."
"It hasn't been sour?"
Jiang Shuyun was quite curious; this woman seemed to understand life quite well.
"I've never felt sour. Sourness is usually used to describe heartbreak. I didn't have time to fall in love back then. By the time I had the leisure to talk about love, I had matured and grown up, and I no longer believed in pure love."
Before graduating, Mu Yi'an worked part-time while studying, spending all her free time working to earn tuition fees. Once she finally settled down, she became more worldly and no longer believed in pure feelings.
"Compared to you, my life is rather ordinary. The most rebellious thing I did was after graduation, I spent three years traveling and getting away from people."
Looking back now, Jiang Shuyun realizes that her life over the past forty years has really not had any major ups and downs.
"You've turned this into Versailles. Nobody wants their life to be full of ups and downs, right?"
"That's true, they were all forced into it."
After saying that, the two looked at each other and smiled.
The day before Mu Yi'an's mother's birthday, after finishing dinner and tidying up the kitchen, she went to her mother-in-law's room.
"Mother, I want to go back to my parents' home tomorrow. It's my mother's birthday. My husband and I will take the children back to stay for two days."
"That's only right. You should go back. Take one of the hens from your house with you; it's just a token of my appreciation."
"Okay, thank you, Mother."
Mu Yi'an left her mother-in-law's room and went to Li Qiuniang's room to the west.
"Sister-in-law, I'm going back to my parents' home tomorrow. Could you take care of the sheep for me for two days?"
"Second sister-in-law, I know, it's your mother's birthday."
"Yes, thank you for your hard work, sister-in-law."
“What’s the trouble? When I go back to my parents’ home, I’ll have to trouble my second sister-in-law too.”
Li Qiuniang was thinking of going back to her parents' home for a couple of days in a few days to visit her husband. She would go back every month for a few days to spend time with Shuwen.
The next day, Mu Yi'an packed her things in the morning, dressed the child, and the couple prepared to go back to her parents' home with the child.
"Second brother, the cart is harnessed, we can go now."
"Shuqi, thank you for your help."
"It's no trouble at all. These past few years, we've been so grateful to you and your wife. Otherwise, we don't know how our family would have survived."
Jiang Shuqi was the eldest son of Uncle Jiang San, with six younger brothers and sisters-in-law, making a total of seven brothers like the Calabash Brothers. Because there were many children and few able-bodied men, his family had previously relied on the clan's relief efforts to make a living.
It wasn't until the brothers grew up and were able to work, and later rented land from Mu Yi'an, that they were able to gradually pay off the famine debt. The year before last, he also got married, and last year he had a son; there was hope for the future.
The Jiang family has a mule cart, but they don't use it much except when plowing the fields.
Jiang Shuqi drove the mule cart to take Jiang Zhonglin's family to the Mu family's house near Xinyuan Town. He didn't go inside the house, but drove the cart back directly.
"Miss is back, Madam, Miss and her family are back."
The Mu family does have servants, but not many, just the five members of the family, who have signed life-long contracts.
Mu Yi'an is now highly focused; she needs to handle the situation carefully and avoid any mistakes.
"Yi'an, you're back. Come in quickly, it's very hot outside."
The one who came out to greet them was Chen Yue, the eldest daughter-in-law of the Mu family, the daughter of the oil shop owner in town. She was quite capable, and her personality complemented that of Mu Zichen, the eldest son of the Mu family.
"Sister-in-law."
"Hello, Auntie!"
"Hello, Aunt!"
Mu Yi'an called out "Sister-in-law," and Jiang Shaoming and Shao Yun quickly greeted her. Jiang Shuyun, holding Chu Yue, also nodded in acknowledgment.
