As the last rays of the setting sun gradually faded, the village slowly came alive.
"Sanwazi, come home for dinner!"
"Mother-in-law, slow down, be careful of your back!"
"Eldest daughter, is dinner ready? The men have worked all day and are exhausted. Hurry up and set the table."
...
Jiang Shuyun heard only the sounds of everyday life; after all, this was a village, a rural life where people made a living by farming.
The farmers here truly toil from dawn till dusk, relying entirely on manual labor for farming; very few families own oxen.
Jiang Shuyun had worked in the fields before, and even her father had done so. But in the last few years, the father and son passed the imperial examinations and became scholars, which improved their family's conditions. They had hired farmhands to help with the land, so the family no longer needed to work in the fields.
"Shuyun, I heard you and your second daughter-in-law had a little accident. Are you alright?"
"Father, I'm fine. Mu Shi bumped her head and is still a little dizzy."
Jiang Shuyun also knew how relatives addressed each other in ancient times. In his memory, the people here spoke Mandarin. Except for the official language used in the imperial examinations, they spoke Mandarin in daily life.
"Have you consulted a doctor?"
"I've already consulted the doctor, and he prescribed some medicine. My sister-in-law has already prepared it for me. The doctor said that if I rest for a few days and the dizziness doesn't go away, I'll be fine."
Jiang's father didn't ask any further questions. His daughter-in-law's affairs were managed by the child's mother, and he hardly interfered.
During dinner, Jiang Shuyun saw most of the Jiang family members, except for his married eldest sister and his third brother who worked in the county town. Most importantly, he saw the original owner's three children: the eldest, the second eldest, and the youngest, whom he was holding in his arms.
Hearing the child call him "Dad," Jiang Shuyun felt a strange, indescribable feeling.
After finally finishing his meal, he took the three children back to their own room.
"Mu Yi'an, are you full?"
Because of the doctor's instructions, Mu Yi'an could legitimately stay in her room, and Jiang Shuyun brought her dinner. Originally, Jiang's sister-in-law was going to bring it, but Jiang Shuyun was afraid that Mu Yi'an wouldn't be comfortable with it, so she insisted on bringing it in herself.
"I'm full. My greatest strength is that I never let myself go hungry. No matter what, I'll always fill my stomach first."
"Mother, are you still in pain?"
Upon hearing the sound, Mu Yi'an sat up abruptly, feeling a momentary dizziness.
"Mother? Are you calling me?"
“Yi’an, this is Shaoming, Shaoyun and Chuyue. The children haven’t seen their mother all day and they miss you.”
Jiang Shuyun wasn't unaware of Mu Yi'an's discomfort; there was nothing they could do but accept it, whether they wanted to or not.
"Ah! Well, I'm fine now."
Mu Yi'an looked closely at the two children, one four years old and the other two, with their little pigtails; they were quite cute. She forced herself to stay alert and not give herself away.
"Yi'an, Chuyue might be hungry. You feed her, and I'll take them both to wash up."
Jiang Shuyun placed the child in Mu Yi'an's arms, and then led the two boys out of the room to wash up.
Mu Yi'an looked at the baby lying in her arms. The baby was fair-skinned, chubby, and quite cute. Perhaps because she was in a familiar embrace, she didn't cry, but kept clutching her clothes with both hands.
"Do you want to drink milk?"
Mu Yi'an looked at her, unsure if she could understand. A five- or six-month-old baby should be able to understand some simple words.
Mu Yi'an spent a long time mentally preparing herself, recalling how the original owner of the body fed the child, and she felt truly ashamed.
With great effort, she unbuttoned the baby's clothes, and as soon as she adjusted the baby's head, she swiftly and accurately found her own food, sucking it vigorously. The feeling was indescribable to Mu Yi'an.
After finally feeding her, I patted her back until she burped, and she slowly fell asleep.
Mu Yi'an had never given birth, but she was very good at taking care of children because she raised her younger brother, who was ten years younger than her. After her brother was born, she helped her mother with postpartum care and looked after the newborn, doing a great job. She even bought books to learn how to care for him.
"You're really something! The little guy fell asleep without crying."
Jiang Shuyun tidied up the two older children, and seeing that they were asleep, she came over.
“I took care of my younger brother, as well as most of my relatives’ children.”
Mu Yi'an didn't want to say much. She hadn't sorted out her memories yet, and she was feeling listless.
"Do you want to go to the toilet? I'll take you; it's getting a bit dark outside."
"Go, drink the herbal medicine. You've been holding it in for half a day."
Mu Yi'an put on her shoes and followed Jiang Shuyun outside. It was already dark outside, the moon was out, and the stars were twinkling.
"I haven't seen such bright stars in ages!"
"Me too."
Both of them knew that the stars were invisible at night back then, as the lights of various neon lights had blocked out the starlight.
"Here, there are two toilets in the house, one for men and one for women."
"That's not bad. Otherwise, you'd have to worry about someone coming in if you didn't go to the toilet."
The toilet was no different from the dry toilet in their hometown, so Mu Yi'an didn't find it unacceptable.
"Alright, let's go. I didn't expect you to know how to use a tinderbox."
“I’ve also watched it on TV, and besides, I have previous memories of it, especially muscle memory.”
Jiang Shuyun is now practicing while recalling the movements, and relying on the original owner's muscle memory, she has managed to grasp most of it.
The two people felt a little awkward back in their room, even though they were about to share a bed.
"Mu Yi'an, there are no other beds in the room, so you might feel a little uncomfortable. I feel the same way. There's nothing we can do, but let's try our best to get through it."
