This scene had already been reshot three times, and many people were getting tired of it, inwardly blaming Shang Yechu for meddling. Shang Yechu, however, seemed oblivious, standing intently at the edge of the set, watching the results of her adaptation.
Sheng Wenzhi sat there, expressionless, not glancing at Shang Yechu again. Any gratitude or guilt she felt had been completely erased by Shang Yechu's actions just now. The only reason Sheng Wenzhi remained was out of resentment.
Sheng Wenzhi didn't believe Shang Yechu could come up with anything good. Not even a single hair on her head.
-----------------
The mute woman's favorite child was Yongjuan.
When facing Yongfu and Pinghua, the mute old woman always wore a long face, glaring at her son and daughter-in-law with hatred. But when Yongjuan came home, the mute old woman always had a happy smile on her face.
Yongjuan left home to work in her teens and only returned home four or five times in the past ten years. The mute old woman, however, thought of her daughter day and night and always missed her.
Countless days, the mute woman stood at her door, gazing towards the village entrance, hoping for Yongjuan's return; countless nights, she used sign language to ask Yongfu, "Where did Yongjuan go?"
Six years had passed since Yongjuan last returned home. After six years, Yongjuan finally came home. And this time, she would never leave again.
Yongjuan was diagnosed with cancer. After spending all her savings on treatment, the doctor announced that she didn't have much time left.
The landlord kicked Yongjuan out of the house, and her brother Yongfu had no choice but to take his sister back home.
Six years later, the mute woman finally saw her daughter, whom she had longed for day and night. Unfortunately, her daughter was about to die.
What kind of sadness would the mute woman show?
The first draft of the script was both sorrowful and poignant;
In Sheng Wenzhi's version of the script, the sorrow is not tragic.
——
Yongjuan, emaciated from chemotherapy, lay in bed.
This is Xiaoyue's room. As the child cherished by the whole family, Xiaoyue's room is the cleanest and tidiest, and the bed is the softest, just right for a seriously ill patient.
Yongjuan's hair had all fallen out, her face resembled a piece of withered wood covered in dust, and terrifying spots spread all over her body. Her abdomen was swollen high, yet she was incredibly thin. She looked like a brownish-yellow spider with thin legs and a large belly.
Yongjuan's old clothes no longer fit; she was only wrapped in a loose-fitting summer maternity nightgown. Nineteen yuan and ninety-nine cents, gleaming with a silky sheen.
Yongfu, with a stern face, kept the fire burning brightly, making the room warm.
The door to the west room where the mute woman lived was always tightly closed. She ate, drank, and relieved herself in this room and could not go out. This was because Yongfu was afraid that the mute woman would be heartbroken if she saw her daughter's miserable state, and might even go insane.
But this effort came to an end three days later. Because Yongjuan had already witnessed what happened that day.
Yongjuan opened her eyes with difficulty and said in a hoarse and indistinct voice, "Brother, let Mom come and see me."
Yongfu's cheeks bulged from clenching his teeth. The farmer didn't say a word, but pushed open the mute woman's door and pulled his mother inside.
The mute woman stood in front of Yongjuan's bed.
Yongjuan squinted at her mother through the crack in the window, and opened her mouth with difficulty:
"mom……"
The mute woman lowered her head and stared at Yongjuan.
Yongfu turned his face away, unable to bear to look any longer.
Suddenly, the mute woman pointed at Yongjuan's bald head and burst into laughter!
Yongfu looked at his mother in astonishment!
The mute woman pointed at Yongjuan's bald head and then at her own gray hair, revealing a childlike, innocent smile.
"Hahaha, hi—"
The mute woman proudly displayed her disheveled, gray hair. Compared to the patient in the bed, her hair was so thick! Enough to be tied into two braids!
The mute woman was overjoyed, revealing a row of teeth covered in tartar and missing two front teeth.
The mute woman didn't recognize Yongjuan at all.
The daughter she longed for lay before her, but due to the long years of separation, the disfigurement caused by chemotherapy, and the mute woman's increasingly unclear mind, the mute woman had no idea who the person in front of her was!
The mute old woman wept bitterly for the death of her daughter-in-law, Pinghua, but she could not recognize the daughter she loved most in her life.
Yongjuan stared blankly at the mute woman who was laughing heartily, then suddenly grinned and said in a sorrowful voice:
"Mom... Oh my god..."
After letting out that cry, Yongjuan, like a fish jerking off, suddenly spat out a mouthful of blood...
Yongjuan died. In her final moments, she was accompanied only by her mentally challenged elder brother and a mother who did not recognize her at all.
The mute woman was startled and ran back to her house in a panic.
In Xiaoyue's cozy room, only Yongfu remained.
Yongfu suddenly felt an indescribable desolation, and his steely body went limp, kneeling down in front of Yongjuan!
"Mom... ah—"
