It turned out that the moment the groundwater broke through the cave, Xi Xi quickly used the illusion talisman she had obtained by selling the giant scorpion's flesh.
[Item Description: One-time consumable. Can transform into any non-living object in the vicinity for 3 minutes.]
At that moment, Xi Xi casually reached into her pocket and found a feather that had fallen from a little white duck.
The duck feathers don't get wet and have great buoyancy, so they easily drifted with the current into the dark rock tunnels where black poisonous insects came and went, and floated all the way into the narrow open canyon.
As a feather, Xi Xi, lying on her back on the water's surface, experienced the perspective of a duckweed for the first time, much like Sun Wukong's seventy-two transformations.
Her only thought was, "Little duck, Aura, I'll never complain about you shedding feathers again..."
Fortunately, the surface of duck feathers has a hydrophobic molecular film, and the feathers are arranged tightly, so water molecules cannot pass through. Xi Xi could not feel the cold of the groundwater at all.
Three minutes later, Xi Xi used the same trick again, climbing up the canyon and quickly reaching the surface.
She took each step very carefully, tentatively stepping repeatedly to avoid the quicksand.
Logically speaking, she had successfully escaped danger, but Little White Duck, Aura, Granny Yu, and Barrett were still hiding in the underground secret room on the other side.
Xi Xi stood there, hesitant. Although the two underground caves were in the same location, they were far apart. For now, they should still be safe.
Just as she was pondering this, a sudden, unannounced tremor shattered the surrounding tranquility.
Xi Xi lowered her head and secretly estimated the frequency of the vibrations in the sand beneath her feet. Her eyes widened in horror as she stared intently at her surroundings, not daring to relax for even a moment.
Suddenly, a blood-red figure leaped out from the quicksand.
The death worm rose from the quicksand with astonishing speed, kicking up a cloud of dust. Its body arced through the air before crashing heavily to the ground.
The moment the worm landed, the groundwater, like a giant dragon awakened, gushed out with tremendous force, splashing water everywhere and creating a bizarre scene.
Completely unexpectedly, the worm was strong enough to break through the sandstone. Without thinking, Xi Xi immediately hugged herself tightly and rolled to the side, hiding behind a small sand dune.
Watching the water gushing out, Xi Xi suddenly understood. The layers of fog in her mind dissipated, and now she completely understood.
I now understand what the primitive desert tribes are worshipping, and I also understand why they chose an underground location connected to the Death Worm Cave instead of a grave for their family rituals.
The tribe worships the death worm and commemorates their deceased relatives.
They were willing to sacrifice the lives of the living to pray for rain, and by sheer chance, they encountered worms that feed on carrion. The worms, smelling the decaying corpses, would rise from the ground, bringing forth bursts of water.
Over time, human sacrifice became a devout water-praying ritual to summon "gods".
And this "deity" is actually a death worm that feeds on human flesh...
Even though she knew it was just a game instance storyline, for some reason Xi Xi felt an inexplicable anger rising in her heart. One reason was towards those clansmen who treated other people's lives as nothing, and the other was towards the terrifying habits of the death worm.
In the original world, there were also sinister and barbaric practices such as human sacrifice. Under the guise of "righteousness" for the benefit of the masses, these practices forced people to give up their lives, and those who lost their lives were often ordinary people who were powerless, vulnerable, and pitiful...
Xi Xi's eyes sharpened as she stared intently at the Death Worm's searching figure. After a long while, she finally discovered a flaw.
The worm twisted and turned, never managing to escape the muddy ground.
Could it not move freely in dry terrain? Xi Xi's mind raced, and then she opened the light screen.
The worm nimbly wriggled its body, its long and flexible antennae constantly touching the ground, as if sensing the subtle changes in its surroundings.
Suddenly, a strong and pungent smell of blood and decay reached the worm's senses.
The scent instantly captured its entire attention, causing it to abruptly stop its search for signs of life.
The death worm detached itself from the waterlogged quicksand and opened its gaping maw towards the blood-soaked ground. Just then, a dazzling purple light pierced the night.
In an instant, the wriggling body of the death worm was cleaved in two!
With a dull thud, a large amount of thick blood gushed out from the wound, splattering everywhere.
However, the worm did not die. It twisted its remaining body and pounced on Xi Xi with astonishing speed.
"That gaping maw isn't its head?" Xi Xi was startled and immediately realized something was wrong, rolling to the side. She had originally planned to take advantage of the worm's feeding to blow its head off, but she hadn't expected that the end of its gaping maw wasn't a vital spot.
That's right, the sand snake's entrails lying to the side were a trap set by Xi Xi to lure it out of its hole.
This is what Xi Xi just asked her mother for. Fortunately, Xi Xi's mother is thrifty and didn't throw away today's sand snake entrails in time; she's even thinking that she might be able to make cat food for Aura.
Xi Xi reacted quickly, using a roll to dodge the worm's impact. At the same time, the light blade in her hand drew an indigo arc in the air, slashing at the worm's side abdomen in an attempt to destroy its internal organs.
However, the dead worm still had plenty of energy.
The abdomen isn't a vital area either? Xi Xi was immediately confused. What kind of magical body structure is this?
With only a small section of the Death Worm remaining, it began to wage guerrilla warfare against Xi Xi, sometimes burrowing under the dunes and sometimes leaping up to launch surprise attacks, attempting to wear down Xi Xi's stamina.
