Chapter 3 Chaos is a Stepping Stone

“Joey, I told you this was reliable! Look at these 60 silver coins, they’re genuine!”

The bearded man opened his purse, took out a coin, and examined it closely in the sunlight, as if admiring a scantily clad young woman.

"Yes, I've received my wages for this month, but I might not be so sure about next month!"

Joey weighed the money bag she had just received in her hand, showing no sign of happiness.

"How could that be? He's counting on us to finish the job quickly, he wouldn't dare delay paying his wages!"

The bearded man looked puzzled, quickly stuffed the money bag into his pocket, tugged at his clothes to cover it tightly, as if afraid that the silver coins he had already obtained would grow wings and run away.

Do you know why this bridge was built?

Today was payday, and Joey was in a good mood, having a rare day off. He had plenty of time to explain things to the bearded man.

The bearded man shook his head like a rattle drum, and his braided mustache swayed from side to side.

"Do you remember the few hundred Draenei who came by boat a few days ago?"

Joey didn't rush to give the answer, but instead asked the bearded man another question in a mysterious manner.

"Those big-butt girls with horns on their heads?"

The bearded man said with a chuckle, as if a group of Draenei girls had appeared before him.

"Ahem... Okay, you're not wrong in your focus!"

"But do you know why they came here?"

Joey thought about what the bearded man said and felt that he was indeed quite right, but he still asked him another question.

"A curious guy who worked on the bridge went up and asked, and the Draenei said they were here to do business!"

The bearded man scratched his head, recalling how a few days ago, a human worker had mustered up the courage to approach a Draenei girl and ask her a question in broken Common.

"Doing business? That's just an excuse!"

"Who comes here to do business like they're moving house, bringing all their cattle and sheep with them!"

Joey chuckled, looking like Conan, and even pushed up his glasses, which weren't actually on his nose.

"Hmm, now that you mention it, it does seem the same as what you said. That's a bit strange!"

The bearded man plopped down on the ground, stretched out his legs, and put his hands behind him, looking very lazy.

"Heh, these Draenei must have been warned not to tell us the truth, for fear of causing panic!"

"What's the truth? Why is it causing panic?"

"Heh, these Draenei look down on us migrant workers and don't hold back when they talk. But what they don't know is that there's one person among us who knows a little bit of Draenei!"

"Who is it? Who is it?"

"Far away yet right before my eyes, this person is me, Joey Brown!"

"Joey, are you serious? You only said you loved reading when you were little, but you didn't mention you spoke Draenei!"

"What's most important in the 21st century? Talent is the most important thing! That's why studying is so important! Luckily, my farmer parents were quite supportive of my education, and they didn't let me fall behind in my studies until I was 12!"

"21st century? Joey, you're using words I don't understand again!"

"Don't worry about the details. What I mean is that you have to study hard. Knowledge can change your destiny. Arm yourself with knowledge! Although the world is tough these days, I firmly believe that having more knowledge in your mind is never a bad thing!"

"Joey, I think you'll definitely become a great scholar someday. You can even read without getting sleepy!"

"Big Beard, forget about it now! The roads leading up are all blocked; they're all playgrounds for nobles and rich lords! But if what those Draenei said is true, then perhaps I can actually take this road that I never originally considered!"

"So...Joey, what exactly did these Draenei say?"

"War is brewing, and it's going to be a major war. The tribes have already attacked!"

"The Horde? That alliance of green-skinned orcs and trolls? Didn't they say they signed a peace treaty with us?"

"If what the book says is true, the Horde alliance doesn't just consist of the orcs and trolls. As for that so-called peace agreement, when it comes to this, it's not even as useful as a piece of toilet paper. This world is ruled by might!"

"Rely on fists? Then I don't have much to say!"

"You big beard, what a waste of your big head!"

"My mom says that all the time!"

The bearded man seemed to be ending the conversation, and Joey shook his head repeatedly upon hearing his words.

The atmosphere suddenly became awkward. The bearded man suddenly patted his head and looked at Joey with a silly grin.

"Joey, why don't you be my brain? I'll do whatever you say!"

Joey looked at the big, clumsy guy and could only nod slightly.

"Big Beard, don't work so hard next month. I heard from the Draenei that this bridge was originally intended to be used to evacuate refugees and transport reinforcements, but it's not very useful anymore!"

Joey sat down next to the bearded man and copied him by putting his hands behind his back, which did make him feel very relaxed.

"Why?"

The bearded man was used to asking questions, but not to thinking about them.

Fortunately, Joey was used to it and had completely adapted to his dwarf friend's personality.

"Because the bridge wasn't even finished yet, the refugees had already left on their own. This also means that the land to the east has already been occupied, so sending soldiers to support them is pointless. Those noble lords are only thinking about guarding their current territory!"
