Chapter 34 Catherine Reunited

As Charlie led Joey past the last row of houses in town, the place became increasingly remote.

"Dear Mr. Charlie, where are we going?"

Joey wasn't a fool. What if Charlie wasn't an honest businessman and led them to a place where they were already lying in ambush? They didn't know if the two of them would even be able to get out alive!

Moreover, judging from Charlie's appearance, he certainly doesn't seem like an honest person.

"My friend, you can rest assured. Although I, Charlie, am the mayor's son, I would never do anything like bullying others!"

Joey rolled her eyes, giving her a "I don't believe you" look.

"I have an excellent reputation in business. I always pay cash on delivery and never cheat anyone, young or old!"

"By the way, I noticed that your dwarf brother has two longswords hanging from his waist. He must be quite a formidable figure. I don't want things to end in a lose-lose situation!"

Charlie was still explaining his reputation in business, and he also noticed Joey's concerns. After all, he considered himself a shrewd businessman and had that much insight.

The two longswords on the bearded man's body were the ones he brought from Tiger Stone Mountain. Although his clothes had been changed, he had kept the two swords, which were excellent for self-defense.

Joey thought Charlie's words made some sense. If he really wanted to double-cross someone, he could have done it in town; there was no need to go all the way here.

He took a few quick steps forward, getting closer to Charlie. In case of any unexpected events, he could subdue him first. Judging from Charlie's thin arms and legs, he shouldn't be a match for him.

"I trust your character, please continue leading the way!"

Joey forced a reassuring smile onto his face, uttering words he didn't mean, and continued walking forward behind Charlie.

We walked for about half an hour more.

There was no path under their feet anymore, but Charlie seemed to know the way well, pushing aside the waist-high weeds and leading Joey and the other two forward.

"We're almost there!"

Charlie stopped, put his hands on his knees, and began to catch his breath.

"Father... really, every time... this kind of work... is always done so far away, it's really... exhausting!"

He was indeed the image of a spoiled brat in my mind. He indulged in excessive pleasures and ruined his health with wine and women. He couldn't even walk a short distance before he started to collapse.

Joey walked up to Charlie, patted him on the shoulder, and said comfortingly, "Mr. Charlie, why don't we rest here for a while? You look exhausted!"

"It's alright, it's alright!"

Charlie glanced at Joey's bulging breasts and instantly perked up.

All he wants now is to close this deal as soon as possible and get the gold coins he wants.

Humans are creatures that need constant encouragement—a sweet treat, a smile, money, or anything else that fills the emptiness in their hearts. This allows them to forget their troubles, shed their weariness, and continue to work hard.

Of course, in his previous life, Joey was also influenced by this kind of illusory "motivation," which led him further and further astray on the path of working odd jobs.

Charlie straightened up and continued leading the way, but his pace noticeably quickened.

Joey smiled calmly and followed closely behind.

"We're here! This is the house!"

After walking for less than ten minutes, a small wooden cabin appeared before them. It was surrounded by waist-high weeds that had not been cleared. If Charlie hadn't been leading the way, most people wouldn't have been able to find this place.

Two tall, burly men stood in front of the cabin, each holding a gleaming broadsword. They looked around and soon spotted Joey and his companions.

Who are you? Stop right there!

A burly man, still quite a distance away, shouted angrily as he walked towards them, carrying a large knife.

"Are you blind? Look carefully who I am!"

Charlie immediately flew into a rage, seemingly wanting to vent his anger from the bank on the burly man.

He stormed toward the burly man.

As soon as he approached the burly man, before the man could even explain, Charlie slapped him hard across the face.

"Young master, I was blind. But the town magistrate instructed me that this person is extremely important and cannot be allowed to be lost!"

The burly man touched his swollen face with one hand, bent over, and apologized to Charlie with a pitiful expression.

He was already regretting his rash behavior. He should have known better than to come and sent another accomplice instead, so as to avoid this undeserved disaster. It was better for a colleague to suffer than for him to suffer. Seeing a colleague suffer was already a wonderful thing.

"Do you think I don't know about my father's affairs? Do I need you to remind me?"

Charlie raised his hand again.

"I wouldn't dare, I wouldn't dare!"

The burly man was so frightened that he backed away repeatedly, scrambling back to the wooden house while talking.

Another burly man standing next to the wooden house saw all of this, and his smile was so wide he could barely contain himself, it was even wider than the mandarin fish in the river.

It seems that being a guard isn't an easy job, and the relationships between colleagues aren't exactly harmonious.

Seeing that the burly man had already run far away, Charlie did not chase after him. He called out to Joey behind him and continued walking towards the cabin.

"Young Master, you've arrived?"

The burly man who had been standing guard by the cabin greeted Charlie, but paid no attention to Joey and the bearded man behind him.

He was insightful; the boss's concerns were none of his business. If the boss wanted to talk, he would; if not, he'd better stay out of it to avoid getting into trouble.
