"Da da da..."
The footsteps behind me grew closer.
Joey could almost hear the breathing of the thing behind him, but he was still debating whether to turn around.
Just as he hesitated, a hand suddenly landed on his right shoulder.
"Holy crap, I really encountered a ghost putting its arm around my shoulder!"
Joey was startled, recalling the legends passed down from her elders in her past life: if you encounter a ghost touching your shoulder at night, you must never turn around, because if you do, you will be haunted by a vengeful ghost and will surely die.
He wondered if the legends from his past life applied equally to this other world.
Why are you shaking?
A slightly mocking voice came from behind.
"Catherine?"
Joey recognized the voice as belonging to the person who spoke it.
He immediately turned around, his anger reaching its peak, and stared wide-eyed at Catherine behind him.
"My dear Lady Catherine, why are you out here in the middle of the night playing tricks on people? Are you trying to scare them to death?"
Joey's initial fear vanished instantly. Although he was quite angry, he was actually more relieved that it wasn't some vengeful ghost that had come, but rather the little imp Catherine.
"I couldn't sleep, so I wanted to go for a walk. I saw you standing here for ages without moving, so I thought you were asleep again!"
As Catherine spoke, she looked around and indeed found nothing unusual. However, when her eyes fell on the wooden house, which looked somewhat eerie in the night, she couldn't help but swallow.
"That's the old house of Vivian that you mentioned?"
Catherine suddenly felt the temperature drop several degrees tonight, and she couldn't help but move closer to Joey.
Joey was quite pleased, but seeing that Catherine was a little scared, his chauvinistic tendencies immediately surfaced.
"If this were really her old home, that would be fine, but I'm afraid this place is her current home!"
Joey suddenly lowered his voice, leaned close to Catherine's ear, and said mysteriously.
This worked. Upon hearing this, Catherine immediately hid behind Joey, put her hands on his shoulders, turned him around 180 degrees, and timidly peered at the cabin.
"Hehe, I, Uncle Qiao, am incredibly clever, I can't possibly outmaneuver a little girl like you!"
Joey felt a surge of smugness and was about to think of another way to get back at Catherine when a baby's cry interrupted his thoughts.
"Waaaaah—"
Hearing a child cry at this time and in this place is not a pleasant thing.
Joey abandoned his joking thoughts and, in perfect unison with Catherine, took more than ten steps back, watching the cabin in front of them warily.
The child's crying was coming from the house in front.
"Joey, what's this?"
Catherine was beginning to regret not staying obediently on that big round bed. Curiosity made her want to come out and see what was going on, just like when she had deserted the group to raid the orcs.
"How would I know? You're asking me, but who am I supposed to ask?"
Joey held his sword horizontally in front of him, not daring to let his guard down.
"Hey, can you stop shaking? I'm scared enough already!"
Catherine suddenly spoke to Joey again, revealing that she was truly terrified.
"Please, it's you who's shaking! I can feel it in my shoulders!"
Joey gave Catherine a stern lecture, but only at this moment did he believe that Catherine wouldn't mind his powerlessness and would instead rely on him even more.
Sure enough, after he finished speaking, he no longer received Catherine's trembling hands from his shoulders, because Catherine's hands left Joey's shoulders.
"Let me tell you, this place is extremely dangerous. You didn't come with me during the day, but little Catherine was terrified and cried during the day, saying she saw that monster!"
"Oh, by the way, little Catherine also said that the monster kidnapped a child, a very small child..."
Joey suddenly stopped talking. He remembered what little Catherine had said, "a child," and he and Catherine had just heard a child crying.
"Could it be... perhaps..."
"Was that child just kidnapped by that monster? Does that mean the monster is right now...?"
Joey's expression immediately tightened, and he couldn't help but swallow.
"My dear Lady Catherine, I think you would be best to leave as soon as possible; this place doesn't seem safe!"
Already under immense stress, Joey was only thinking about getting Catherine away as quickly as possible. He didn't want to have to endure Catherine's screams when facing the unknown monster later.
Catherine behind him did not respond to Joey's words.
"Catherine?"
Joey called out again.
His calls were swallowed by the night and went unanswered.
It was only then that Joey realized something was wrong.
He suddenly turned around.
Behind me was only the darkness of night, empty and desolate. The dappled moonlight fell on the ground, resembling strangely shaped footprints.
“Catherine!”
Joey called out again, but still received no response.
The baby's cries continued, and Joey could only grip his longsword tightly, ready to deal with any unexpected events that might occur at any moment.
"call out!"
Suddenly, a white substance shot towards Joey's face.
Joey quickly raised his longsword to protect his face.
The white object struck the longsword directly, sticking it to the blade and dragging it forcefully toward the front of the wooden house.
Joey gripped the longsword tightly, not daring to let go. This longsword was the only thing that could give him a sense of security, and he couldn't let the monster he hadn't even met yet take it away now.
