Although it was a joke, Yan Wuxie's heart remained unsettled.
While waiting for the food to be served, Nangong examined the restaurant's interior.
"Little brother Wuxie, how long have you been in the capital? Where are you from?"
Yan Wuxie glanced at Nangong and replied, "I've been here for two months. I'm from Guangdong Province."
Nangong was surprised.
"You're only eighteen years old, how dare you come to such a far place alone?"
Yan Wuxie nodded and continued, "I am here on the behalf of the country to complete tasks for the country and receive remuneration in return."
"So that's how it is."
Nangong felt it would be too presumptuous of him not to inquire in detail about Yan Wuxie's work.
Nangong looked at the flow of people coming and going outside the shop and asked, "What kind of place is Guangdong Province?"
"It's warmer than here."
Yan Wuxie could only give such an introduction to Guangdong Province. He hadn't really seen the scenery in the province properly. His first trip away from home after becoming an adult was to the capital.
Soon the waiter called out and brought out the dishes.
Nangong thoroughly enjoyed a bowl of steaming hot mutton soup paired with a thick steamed bun.
In the Nangong family, diet is strictly controlled, ostensibly for the sake of health.
Indeed, the Nangong family is burdened with a curse, and everyone in the family will die at the age of twenty-five. The manner of death varies, and the head of the family will order the management of the methods of death that can be avoided as much as possible, with diet being a major aspect.
Nangong doesn't care about any of that now. Anyway, she only has a few years left to live, so she can do whatever makes her happy!
After lunch, Nangong followed Yan Wuxie to buy some more meat and vegetables so that they would be stored at home and he wouldn't have to go out to buy them so often.
On the way home, Nangong looked at Yan Wuxie, whose arms were stuffed full of bags, and asked, "Don't you need to work today?"
Yan Wuxie shook his head, "It's alright, I made sure to give them a heads-up beforehand."
After getting home and unpacking, Nangong changed back into the clothes Yan Wuxie had given her for home wear, and the two sat on the wooden bench, each doing their own thing.
Having gotten up too early in the morning, Nangong felt a little sleepy. She usually took a nap at home. She looked at Yan Wuxie and had the idea of teasing him.
"Little brother Wuxie, I'm going to take a nap. Do you want to sleep with me?"
I thought Yan Wuxie would be shy and refuse, but to my surprise, the boy just nodded, took off his coat and stood up.
Let's go.
Now that things had come to this, Nangong could not back down. She forced herself to walk ahead, secretly glancing back at Yan Wuxie, only to see a calm and composed expression on Yan Wuxie's face.
This can't be right!! He was a perfectly respectable gentleman sleeping in the living room last night, how come he's become so bold after just one night?!
Nangong bit her lip and stiffly lay down on the bed, shifting to make room for Yan Wuxie. Yan Wuxie calmly lay down next to Nangong, and pulled the blanket over them both.
Nangong felt inexplicably awkward, but she finally couldn't help but speak up.
"Little brother Wuxie, why are you suddenly willing to sleep with me?"
Yan Wuxie kept his eyes closed and didn't notice the questioning look on the girl's face next to him.
"Wooden chairs are not comfortable to sleep on."
Nangong nodded blankly; indeed, it was a very reasonable reason.
Before long, the boy beside her began to breathe evenly. Nangong was restless and couldn't fall asleep. She turned to look at Yan Wuxie's handsome yet still somewhat childish face. The longer she looked, the more shy she felt.
After the initial shyness subsided, a strange feeling welled up in Nangong's heart. She believed in fate and thought that meeting Yan Wuxie was perhaps the luckiest thing that had ever happened to her in the "second half of her life".
Gradually, drowsiness crept in, and Nangong leaned closer to Yan Wuxie. After hesitating for a moment, she reached out and took Yan Wuxie's arm, falling into a deep sleep.
She woke up again when Yan Wuxie woke her up, and the boy nudged the still sleeping Nangong.
"Dinner is ready."
Nangong rubbed his eyes and agreed. The girl slowly crawled out of the warm bed, and Yan Wuxie just watched her cute appearance.
Feeling a bit cold, Nangong shivered. Seeing this, Yan Wuxie draped his coat over her shoulders and made her put it on.
After a moment of calm, Nangong suddenly stretched out his hands, making a gesture as if he wanted a hug.
"Carry me to dinner."
Yan Wuxie was startled by Nangong's bold move. He cleared his throat awkwardly, bent down, and hugged the girl in his arms.
The two ate their meal in silence. Nangong's pretty face was visibly flushed; she hadn't expected Yan Wuxie to actually hug her.
However, Nangong quickly calmed down. They were already sleeping in the same bed, so what was this little thing?
Days passed by, and a month went by in the blink of an eye.
When Nangong woke up that day, she looked at Yan Wuxie, who was still fast asleep beside her. She had noticed in the past few days that Yan Wuxie would always go out in the middle of the night. Although he moved very quietly, she, being a light sleeper, still managed to notice him.
Nangong didn't think much of it; it must be something related to Yan Wuxie's work. After all, for the past month, the boy had spent all his time with him except for work.
Before Yan Wuxie got up, Nangong tiptoed out of bed. Winter was coming, and winter in the capital was not easy to endure. Nangong put on a warm coat and went to the bathroom.
Opening the door to the yard, Nangong quickly washed up and went back inside to prepare breakfast for Yan Wuxie.
While the girl was busy making breakfast, Yan Wuxie was woken up by the noise from the kitchen, as the house wasn't very soundproof.
Rubbing his eyes, Yan Wuxie dragged his tired body out of the room, where Nangong, who was frying eggs, noticed Yan Wuxie slowly moving over.
"Why didn't you sleep a little longer? Did I wake you up?"
The girl's gentle voice immediately perked Yan Wuxie up. He shook his head and chuckled, "Can't sleep? What should I make?"
Yan Wuxie approached Nangong from behind and discovered that Nangong was frying eggs.
"How about fried eggs and hot porridge for breakfast?"
In response to Nangong's question, Yan Wuxie simply nodded.
"I'll listen to you."
These words immediately plunged the two into a shy silence, and Yan Wuxie quickly turned around to wash up.
After a simple breakfast, Nangong carried two cups of hot tea to the living room, handing one to Yan Wuxie. The two blew on the tea in unison, then took a sip in unison.
Yan Wuxie looked at the gloomy sky outside, where light snow was falling.
"It's gotten colder lately, so I'm going to the city to buy some coal, otherwise it'll be too cold to sleep."
“I’ll go with you.” Nangong Mingliang’s eyes met the boy’s.
"good."
After putting on warm clothes and grabbing an umbrella from the doorway, Yan Wuxie and Nangong went out. Walking towards the city, Yan Wuxie put his arm around Nangong, keeping the girl close to him to prevent the fine snow from falling on her.
