The doorbell kept ringing, and the person downstairs in the rain seemed certain that someone was home, and kept waiting patiently.
Yang Xile looked back at the living room and immediately understood.
Because of the heavy rain outside, the room was dimly lit. Lin Xiao had several ceiling lights and wall lamps on. Since she hadn't drawn the curtains when she stood by the window watching the rain that morning, people downstairs should have been able to see the lights on in the room.
This is why Wei Changfeng stood motionless in the rain, like a statue, waiting.
Even the usually meddlesome building manager couldn't stand it anymore. He came out with an umbrella and asked him what room number he was looking for. He asked if he wanted to go into the hallway to take shelter from the rain. If no one answered the doorbell, the occupant was probably not home.
Wei Changfeng didn't speak French and couldn't understand what the building manager was saying. The manager had no choice but to ask him in broken English, "Number? Room number?"
Wei Changfeng understood this and gave Lin Xiao's room number. The building manager immediately recognized the room; it was a beautiful Chinese girl's room, and a while ago a handsome young man had given him 1000 euros to unlock it, then changed all the locks against his wishes.
Just now, when the rain was heaviest, that generous young man went upstairs to find the girl with bags full of flowers, wine, and food. Not long after, this big, goofy guy showed up too. Wow, this is perfect material for a French romantic film! I wonder if the ending will be a tragedy or a comedy?
Seeing the complicated situation, the building manager didn't dare to get involved and turned back. In the instant he turned around, he secretly glanced at Wei Changfeng in the rain. He was carrying a bunch of roses that had been soaked to a pulp by the heavy rain, but he didn't seem to be carrying any other dangerous weapons.
"Well, Chinese people are generally honest, so in theory, such a vicious incident as fighting over love shouldn't happen." The building manager reassured himself as he walked back, but ultimately couldn't bring himself to do it. Just as he was about to enter the building, he turned back and threw the umbrella he was holding at Wei Changfeng's feet, meaning that if Wei Changfeng wasn't coming in, he could use the umbrella to keep out the rain.
The rain was very heavy and torrential, with raindrops pattering in almost continuous lines on the road and rooftops. Even though Lin Xiao's apartment was relatively upscale and had good soundproofing, the sound of the rain outside could still be heard loudly from inside.
Lin Xiao huddled at the doorway, crying. Yang Xile stood at her feet, staring at the monitor screen. Wei Changfeng stood tall and proud like a pine tree in the downpour.
After a while, Yang Xile said, "Should we let him come up? If you want him to give up completely, maybe it would be better to let him come up and see for himself."
Lin Xiao gradually calmed down from crying, looked up at Yang Xile, and seemed not to understand what he was saying for a moment.
Yang Xile repeated, "Only when Wei Changfeng sees you with another man will he finally give up."
Lin Xiao understood this time. Following Yang Xile's gaze, she looked around the room. On the dining table were flowers, red wine, and pizza. Inside the room were two young men and women. Although their clothes were still intact, it was obvious to anyone with a brain what kind of erotic story was unfolding in the room and what would happen next.
"Okay." Lin Xiao tried to regain his senses, stood up and looked at the screen. Wei Changfeng was still standing there motionless, as if petrified, holding something in his arms that he couldn't tell what it was.
"Let him come up," Lin Xiao said weakly.
The intercom beeped. Wei Changfeng had already seen the lights on in Lin Xiao's house and knew she was home. Now, she was finally ready to see him.
He strode into the apartment and tried to tidy himself up in front of the mirror in the elevator. He had been soaked by the heavy rain and hadn't slept for nearly twenty hours since receiving Lin Xiao's breakup text. Even now, despite his efforts to fix his appearance in front of the mirror, he still looked like a wilted eggplant.
"It's okay, Xiaoxiao has seen him at his most handsome. This version of myself won't scare her." Wei Changfeng tried to comfort himself, then looked down at the flowers in his arms. This was completely beyond saving. The red rose petals had already been battered to pieces by the heavy rain, and almost none of them were intact. Some of the stems were even bare.
Wei Changfeng took out a small red velvet box from his pocket, but it seemed unable to support the few remaining flower heads. So he simply took out a ring from the box and slipped it directly onto the bare flower stem.
He knew Lin Xiao wasn't a pretentious girl. As long as she forgave him this time, even though he didn't know what he had done wrong, he would make it up to her with the most grand ceremony and present her with the most beautiful flowers.
Lin Xiao stood close to the door, hearing heavy footsteps in the corridor. The rain had completely soaked Wei Changfeng; every step he took was heavy, and water was dripping down his face.
Wei Changfeng stopped at the door. He noticed the lock had been changed, unlike the one he and Lin Xiao had used when they stayed here last time. The large smart lock had a small doorbell icon, and for some reason, Wei Changfeng didn't press it, choosing instead to knock.
"Knock knock"...
"Xiaoxiao, are you home? Your brother has come to see you!" Wei Changfeng tried his best to sound energetic.
Before he could say it a second time, the door opened.
Although soaked to the bone by the heavy rain, Wei Changfeng's face broke into a radiant smile. Lin Xiao, whom he had been longing for day and night, was standing right in front of him, separated only by a door.
