Chapter 41: Predicting things like a god (1/2)

Lady Hou paused, her anger momentarily subsiding: "What do you mean by that? What does this have to do with the Prefect's Office?"

Chi Yan gestured for Ba Liang to let go, and Butler Wang knelt down on the ground with a thud, his face somewhat unnatural.

His behavior gave Lady Hou a bad feeling. What had this scoundrel done behind her back?

However, she has not yet realized the seriousness of the situation, and therefore remains calm.

Chi Yan chuckled: "Today, I accompanied Madam to Putuo Temple to offer incense, but we were robbed on the way. They specifically named someone who had hired someone to kill my Madam. Madam, why don't you guess who this person who hired the killer is?"

Butler Wang's eyes widened in disbelief as he looked at Chi Yan.

He did bribe those thugs, but he only wanted them to kidnap Shen Tangning; he didn't actually hire someone to kill her!

At this moment, Lady Hou's heart was also in turmoil. She glared at Steward Wang with horror. How dare he do such a thing behind her back and even let someone have a hold on him!

You idiot! Utterly foolish!

Chi Yan gave a cryptic sneer: "That's right, it's Butler Wang."

"Second Young Master, you're spouting nonsense!"

Butler Wang certainly couldn't admit it, nor dared he. Although he didn't know what had happened along the way, once the charge of hiring someone to commit murder was proven, even Madam Hou couldn't protect him!

"I, Wang Fu, swear to heaven that I have never done such a thing! I beg you, Madam, to see the truth and give me justice!"

He felt wronged and believed that Chi Yan had deliberately exaggerated the facts.

Just as she was about to show a look of grief and indignation, someone knelt down beside her with a thud. It was Granny Qin. She wiped her eyes and began to cry, "My young lady was injured by those villains and is still lying in bed. If you don't believe me, you can go and see for yourself!"

She was sobbing uncontrollably, but her words were clear and coherent: "Could it be that my young lady is using her body as a joke to slander Steward Wang? I also find this strange. How could a servant like Steward Wang dare to plot against his mistress? Could it be that someone is behind this?"

Granny Qin knelt on the ground and kowtowed heavily: "I beg the Lady Marquis to thoroughly investigate this matter and give my young lady an explanation!"

"You!" The Lady Hou's face turned pale and then red with anger at the Lady's veiled insults.

That vile woman!

Could it be that she suspects that she herself instructed Steward Wang?

The accusation was unfounded, and Lady Hou's face turned green with rage!

If she had actually done it, that would be one thing, but she knew absolutely nothing about it!

Madam Hou gritted her teeth, but at this crucial moment she calmed down: "Fine! Chi Yan, you say that Steward Wang did this, but do you have any evidence? Where are those villains now? Let them come and confront us!"

Chi Yan looked troubled and hesitated before saying, "Those people are already dead."

"Dead?" Madam Hou frowned, her expression intriguing. "So, you mean there's no way to prove it now? Then you need to produce some concrete evidence. You can't just point fingers and say whoever it is without any proof, can you?"

She straightened her sleeves, her tone carrying a hint of arrogance, "Yan-ge'er, I'm not trying to criticize you, but your actions were far too impulsive! If the government investigated and handled cases as hastily as you, who knows how many wrongful convictions would there be in the world!"

Upon hearing this, Steward Wang seemed to have grasped a lifeline and instantly regained his confidence: "Second Young Master, those people are already dead, so how can they testify? To put it bluntly, if you are deliberately trying to make things difficult for me, then I will have no way to defend myself even if I am in the right."

Chi Yan and Madam Hou met eyes, a dark and ambiguous emotion flashing in their eyes. This woman was still so aloof, seemingly certain that he couldn't escape her grasp.

But times have changed, so how could she be sure that he would remain the same?

“What you say is true, Madam. We must be sure to provide evidence in our words and actions. I was in such a hurry that I almost forgot about that.” Chi Yan smiled as if he had just realized something. For some reason, Madam Hou felt inexplicably uneasy looking at his smile.

Chi Yan rubbed his head, slowly raised one eyebrow, and said with a half-smile, "As for witnesses, there are some, but they probably won't be able to come anytime soon. I'm afraid I can't persuade them to come with my status."

A hint of suspicion flashed in Lady Hou's eyes, her doubts deepening: "Who is the witness you're talking about?"
