Shen Tangning stared at his dejected appearance, her eyes filled with complex emotions.
This person is extremely particular about his appearance. His clothes must be neat and luxurious, and he must also be incense-scented. He is especially concerned about his face and always looks in the mirror several times before going out.
Chi Yan looked utterly disheveled. He had bruises of varying degrees around his eyes and jaw, and his clothes were in disarray, as if he had been beaten up.
He subconsciously straightened his collar, but halfway through, he realized it wasn't necessary. His movements froze, and he awkwardly lowered his hand, his voice dry.
"You, how did you get here?"
Shen Tangning noticed his unease and turned to the jailer beside her: "Could you please open the door? I'll take these things in and leave soon."
The prison warden hesitated for a moment, mindful of her status, but after weighing the options, he gritted his teeth and nodded: "Then Miss Shen, you'd better hurry."
He stepped forward and opened the cell door, tactfully leaving the two of them alone: "I'm going to take a look around next door."
After the prison warden left, Shen Tangning handed the lamp in her hand to Xue Qing, took the things she had brought, and stepped into the cell.
Chi Yan frowned upon seeing this: "Don't come in, it's dirty in here."
She ignored him, squatted down next to Chi Yan, and scrutinized him inch by inch: "Did they torture you?"
He shook his head, pursed his lips, and glanced at her: "I didn't kill anyone, much less do that kind of thing."
After he finished speaking, he waited anxiously for her reaction. For some reason, he was afraid of seeing disappointment in her eyes.
Shen Tangning was taken aback for a moment, but upon hearing this, she showed her first smile since meeting him: "I believe in my husband."
Chi Yan was stunned for a moment, his voice inexplicably hoarse: "Really? You really believe me?"
She reached out and tidied his disheveled hair: "Husband, you have no grudge against that beautiful girl, why do you want to make things difficult for her?"
Chi Yan hadn't thought much of it at first, but after hearing this, the grievances in his heart finally found an outlet. He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye, suppressing his anger, and said in a muffled voice, "I remember everything you said. Xiao Yu provoked me, but I held back and didn't fight him."
"Ji Wuyai and Tang Xu took me to see Miss Pingting. I just kept my head down and ate the whole time. Even when I drank alcohol, I only had two cups."
The more he talked, the more aggrieved he felt. Even with such caution, he still couldn't prevent it.
Chi Yan couldn't understand why someone would go to such lengths to mess with a powerless and spoiled brat like him.
A strange emotion swept through Shen Tangning's heart, a mixture of sourness and bloating.
She grasped Chi Yan's hand and, under his dazed gaze, placed a small, round box of ointment into his hand, slowly closing it: "Time is limited. Now, my husband only needs to tell me roughly what happened today, especially before and after the incident. Try your best to recall everything, whether you remember it or not."
Chi Yan's emotions calmed under her resolute gaze, and she fell into deep thought:
"I think I must be drunk."
“Should?” Shen Tangning frowned. “But you just said you only drank two cups, and Ba Liang said you have a good alcohol tolerance.”
Chi Yan's expression darkened slightly: "Yes, but after drinking two glasses of wine, I felt dizzy and lightheaded, and that state... well, something wasn't right."
A guess flashed through Shen Tangning's mind.
Was he drugged?
“Ji Wuyai and Tang Xu drank more than I did, especially Ji Wuyai, who kept vomiting. The two of them had to go to the bathroom twice during the meal.”
Later, Chi Yan seemed to have fallen into a deep sleep for a while. When he woke up, there was a rich fragrance of orchids around him. He opened his eyes groggily and saw a beautiful woman.
Ji Wuyai and Tang Xu were both absent; they must have gone to the washroom again.
Actually, he was in a daze at that time and could not even see the woman's face clearly, let alone have the strength to stand up and do anything else.
