The woman was Pingting. She spoke to him intermittently for a while, her words muffled as if they came from a distant place. Chi Yan tried hard to decipher them and caught a few key pieces of information. It turned out that she had chosen the colored paper that Ji Wuyai had handed her.
However, Ji Wuyai was not there at the moment.
Chi Yan vaguely felt that it was not appropriate to be in a room with a woman, so he suggested that she come back later.
But the other party didn't move, and out of courtesy, Chi Yan couldn't ask him to leave. He felt stuffy in the room and desperately wanted to go out for some fresh air, so he tried to stand up.
Pingting saw him swaying unsteadily and seemed to want to lend a hand, but Chi Yan refused.
After he finally managed to stand up straight, Pingting suddenly screamed and retreated to the window in terror.
Chi Yan turned his head in confusion. She seemed to glance at him before resolutely jumping out of the window.
With a "plop".
As Ji Wuyai and Tang Xu pushed open the door and entered, Chi Yan's mind slowly came to its senses.
Someone jumped into the lake.
...
Shen Tangning listened to the whole thing, her eyes dark and unfathomable.
From Chi Yan's description, Pingting clearly came for him, but was it worth risking her life just to frame him?
One is a notorious playboy, the other is a courtesan who commands a fortune for a single dance.
The Prefect of Jingzhao would not believe Chi Yan's explanation, and the common people would certainly not believe it either.
If she hadn't known Chi Yan's character, she probably wouldn't have believed it.
Even Chi Yan himself was bewildered. He hung his head, looking lost and muttered to himself, "I've never seen her before, let alone had any enmity with her. Why would she do this?"
Shen Tangning gripped his hand tightly, her tone inexplicably icy: "Sometimes, even if you don't provoke others, someone will provoke you. They want to harm you not because you did anything wrong, but because of their evil."
Her hands were soft and warm, as if they possessed some kind of power. Chi Yan pulled himself out of his painful self-reflection and stared at her blankly: "Then what should I do?"
"Tell them what you know, and leave the rest to me." Shen Tangning brought out the food she had brought one by one and gestured for Ba Liang to put down the bedding.
She did these things without any impatience, but rather with a calm and composed demeanor. Unconsciously, Chi Yan was influenced by her, and the anxiety in his heart lessened considerably.
As Shen Tangning left, she glanced back at Chi Yan and smiled slightly: "Take care of yourself, and wait for me to come pick you up."
Chi Yan watched her departing figure and slowly clenched his fist.
...
“Chi Yan would never do such a thing! There must be some misunderstanding! Please investigate carefully and clear his name as soon as possible…”
Shen Tangning had just left the prison when she heard a sound coming from ahead.
Ji Wuyai and Tang Xu were talking to the prison warden, and they seemed somewhat agitated.
The warden verbally brushed him off, saying, "Alright, alright, it's not your place to teach us how to handle cases. It's getting late, hurry back! We might call you in for questioning again at any time..."
Shen Tangning paused and stepped forward.
The two men turned around and saw her, their expressions a mixture of surprise and guilt.
Tang Xu's expression was complicated: "Miss Shen?"
Ji Wuyai stepped forward, his voice urgent: "Sister-in-law, how is Chi Yan?"
