Chapter 3: Asking Myself If I Really Could Let Go
The air was filled with a nauseatingly strong stench of blood.
"Little bunny, be good."
"Open the door."
"Hurry up and drive it."
"I want to come in."
A strange male voice, tinged with laughter, hummed a lullaby.
"Help me, I want to go home..."
The crying grew louder and louder.
The vision gradually became clearer from blurry.
Blood and remains littered the ground. In the center, a boy was tightly chained by the neck, and glaring blood kept flowing from his abdomen. The wound that cut him in half was so deep that the bone was almost visible.
"I'm in so much pain, help me, it hurts so much, let me go home."
"Please let me go, it hurts, I want to go home."
"I want to go home."
The boy's face was deathly pale, and fresh tears washed away the dried tear tracks on his face again and again. His eyes were red and swollen, and he struggled to crawl away time and time again, only to be pulled back to the side by the owner of the chains.
The person chuckled softly in the darkness, gently humming the same lyrics over and over: "Little bunny, be good, don't cry."
The sounds of chains striking the ground, blood dripping, eerie chants, and weak cries for mercy mingled together, all conveying despair and pallor.
As the view drew closer, the boy's face on the ground finally came into view.
"Wen Yanyu!"
Fu Hanchuan's pupils trembled, and he suddenly woke up.
The group of people who were drinking and chatting nearby were startled.
"Oh dear, what's wrong?" Shen Huainan's hand trembled, spilling most of the wine in his glass. "Have you gotten sick from being pestered by Wen Yanyu?"
The soothing music and the smell of alcohol in the private room stimulated my nerves, and my numb half of my body gradually regained sensation.
Fu Hanchuan's heart pounded, his mind went blank, and his usually cold and aloof expression was completely filled with fear.
"Did you just call out to Wen Yanyu?" Thinking of their relationship from the past two years and the phone call he received, Wan Haihui raised an eyebrow and teased, "You kid, you haven't fallen for her, have you? If you do, just say yes already, why are you dragging this out?"
Still reeling from the nightmare, Fu Hanchuan subconsciously frowned and retorted, "I don't like men."
Seeing that Fu Hanchuan looked like he was having a nightmare, the people in the private room exchanged glances, all of them seeing amusement in each other's eyes.
Shen Huainan smiled broadly.
"Hey, Lao Fu, Wen Yanyu is actually quite good-looking. She almost died for you. Don't be so heartless."
Wen Yanyu had publicly expressed his love several times, only to be rejected repeatedly, but he became more determined with each setback. This was the first time in all these years that they had seen Fu Hanchuan so helpless with someone, and so flustered.
As friends who can't compete with each other in their careers, they finally see each other suffer a setback, so naturally they want to tease each other thoroughly.
It was just a nightmare.
Fu Hanchuan closed his eyes and pressed his temples. His back was already soaked with cold sweat, and his shirt clung to his skin, feeling sticky and uncomfortable.
Hearing his friend say that, Fu Hanchuan looked disgusted. "No way. Don't mention his name in front of me again. It's disgusting."
Shen Huainan chuckled, "How heartless."
Fu Hanchuan put on his clothes and got up to leave.
Gu Fengyao smiled and narrowed his eyes, then suddenly joked, "If you really don't like him, how about I have some fun with him? He's quite my type, and he'll save you a lot of trouble."
Fu Hanchuan, who was about to leave, suddenly stopped in his tracks as the image of Wen Yanyu collapsing and begging for mercy in his dream reappeared before his eyes.
My heart felt like it was burning with a raging fire.
The manic mood was instantly ignited.
"Gu Fengyao." The man's face darkened, and his hoarse voice suddenly became more forceful, filled with anger. "Wen Yanyu is a person, not something you can play with."
"Stay away from him, don't play such a cruel joke on me."
Gu Fengyao raised an eyebrow in surprise.
Sensing that Fu Hanchuan's mood was off, Shen Huainan clinked his glass, signaling Gu Fengyao to stop.
The door slammed shut, and Fu Hanchuan's figure disappeared.
Shen Huainan and Gu Fengyao looked at each other.
"What's going on?"
"Finally driven crazy by work?"
"Tsk, how did these two end up like this? They were clearly..."
"Alright, drink your wine."
Wan Haihui took in all the expressions on the man's face, smiled without saying a word, and took a sip of his drink.
The next morning, Wen Yanyu was awakened by excruciating pain and the sound of a phone call.
The water in the bathtub had gone completely cold.
The phone beside the bathtub vibrated incessantly, but Wen Yanyu remained calm. He raised his hand to wipe away the blood that was overflowing from his nose and leaned against the tub for a long time to recover.
He then picked up the phone and gently pressed the answer button.
When the call connected, the woman on the other end choked up before speaking in a trembling voice, "Xiao Wen... how are you feeling?"
Wen Yanyu washed the blood off her hands with water, turned on the speakerphone, and said, "Sister Lan, don't worry, I'm fine."
"Silly child, how could you do that? Even if she doesn't like you, you can't do something so foolish." There was a sound of tissues being pulled out on the other end of the phone, as if someone was wiping away tears.
"Fu Hanchuan has only helped you a few times, why do you like him so much? You're still young, we'll meet many more people. No, don't do anything foolish. You haven't even attended my wedding yet. Didn't you say you wanted to be the godfather of my future child?"
The woman on the other end was sobbing.
Wen Yan's words conveyed a sense of helplessness.
After being forced into the entertainment industry by the plot, the company assigned Li Lan as his manager. He was the first person Li Lan managed. The two were close in age, and Li Lan took good care of him and treated him like a younger brother because she knew he had no parents.
Li Lan was unaware of what had happened to her. She only thought that she liked Fu Hanchuan, which was why she made those public declarations of love. Although the internet is open, social opinion is not very accepting of same-sex relationships.
He is a public figure, so this matter has a huge impact. She has tried countless times to persuade herself not to ruin her future, but it's no use.
"Sister Lan, don't worry, I don't like Fu Hanchuan, and I won't continue to pursue him."
"Don't lie to me, you've done it this time..."
The person swallowed pills in the mountains. If they hadn't been discovered by a few female college students who were exploring, they would have had no chance of survival in that desolate wilderness.
In the desolate mountains, clearly determined to die, Li Lan couldn't help but cry again.
Her feelings for Wen Yanyu were complicated. He was the first newcomer she had mentored. She watched him become a sensation, watched him be loved by many, and watched him become obsessed with someone he shouldn't have fallen for, even nearly losing his life in the process.
She knew she shouldn't have so many feelings for the artists, but Wen Yanyu, who called her "sister" every day and was both fragile and strong, was ultimately different in her eyes.
People outside say that Wen Yanyu is trying to climb the social ladder or gain popularity, but she knows that's not true. Wen Yanyu has donated almost all the money she has earned in the past two years, keeping only a little for living expenses.
She couldn't understand why Wen Yanyu, who clearly didn't like it, looked so pained. He didn't want fans' support or money, yet he forced himself to stay in this industry.
Wen Yanyu said slowly, "Really, Sister Lan, I've thought it through. The contract I signed with the company was for five years, and there are still more than two years left. I want to use the remaining two years to make some money, and then retire from the entertainment industry and live a good life."
Li Lan: "Are you telling the truth?"
"Yes, I've thought it through." Wen Yanyu chuckled. "Don't worry about me, I've really come to terms with it. I'll be attending your wedding as a member of your family, sister."
"I'm saving up to buy a small courtyard in the countryside to grow flowers and retire. Sister, could you help me see what kind of jobs I can take on? I haven't saved up much money yet."
Li Lan choked up, wiping away her tears: "Okay, you should rest for a few days. I'll go look for a new job for you and send it to you as soon as I find one."
"good."
The call ended.
Wen Yanyu changed her clothes and stood in front of the mirror. Her gaze slowly moved upwards. The person in the mirror had a pale, sickly complexion, with the red mole at the corner of her eye seemingly the only color.
Her eyes, which should have been full of affection and tenderness, were instead filled with an inescapable weariness, and her dark pupils were slowly losing their color at a speed imperceptible to the naked eye.
Wen Yanyu sighed softly, touched her hair which was almost completely white, and looked helpless.
When you have time to dye your hair, get it cut short at the same time.
