Chapter 47 Abundant Fish

Yun Jin didn't dare to catch earthworms. When fishing, Li Aimei dug up earthworms and strung them together to catch fish.

Whether it was because they chose a good location or because Yun Jin knew how to bait the holes, she had Li Aimei dig up a lot of earthworms, chopped them into several pieces, and threw them into the water to bait the holes.

After she put the bait down, the float made of sorghum stalks began to bob up and down.

Yun Jin seized the opportunity and raised the pole.

A carp weighing almost half a pound was caught, and Li Aimei was so excited she almost jumped up.

Yun Jin smiled as she pulled the fish back. Li Aimei excitedly assisted her, taking the fish off the plate, attaching earthworms to it, and then placing the carp in an enamel basin they had brought, keeping it in a little water.

To prevent them from getting too hot, they even broke off small branches and grass to cover them.

In that short time, Yun Jin caught another fish.

This time it's a crucian carp about three fingers wide.

Then came palm-sized carp and crucian carp the size of two or three fingers.

At this time of year, there are no tilapia in the water; it's mostly local fish.

Crucian carp soup is delicious, and braised carp is flavorful.

After fishing for about an hour, it got hotter and hotter, and Yun Jin had finished drinking the water she had brought. She glanced at the dozen or so carp and crucian carp, and a few crayfish.

Discovering crayfish was the biggest surprise for Yun Jin.

I didn't expect to find crayfish here. Compared to pig lungs and duck intestines, using earthworms to catch crayfish is too inefficient.

Upon seeing the crayfish, Li Aimei said disdainfully, "What's so good about these crayfish? They're all shells with no meat. Nobody likes to eat them."

Yun Jin: "???"

In later generations, crayfish was a must-order item at food stalls and late-night snacks. How come it's now so poorly regarded?

"If it's not delicious, it's because you don't know how to eat it. Next time, catch more and make me a spicy crayfish or garlic crayfish. You'll know how delicious this crayfish is once you try it."

As Yun Jin spoke, she couldn't help but swallow her saliva, wanting to eat spicy crayfish.

Li Aimei looked at him with suspicion: "Is it really that delicious? I've eaten them before. The shells are hard, not as good as small river shrimp."

"You'll see when the time comes, they'll eat one without making a sound," Yun Jin said confidently.

Li Aimei was skeptical.

On her way back, Yun Jin chatted and laughed with Li Aimei: "Can you make crucian carp and tofu soup?"

Li Aimei shook her head: "I can only cook vegetarian dishes."

The main problem is that in this day and age, who eats meat and fish every day? We've hardly ever eaten it, so how could we possibly make it?

Yun Jin, who frequently watches food videos, said she wasn't worried: "Although my cooking skills are not great, I know how to do it."

"When the time comes, buy a block of white tofu, scrape the scales off the crucian carp, remove the belly and gills, fry it on both sides in oil, then add boiling water and bring it to a boil. After that, put the tofu in and stew it for a while before serving."

Li Aimei thought it sounded simple and decided to go back and give it a try.

When the two returned, they encountered people from the compound who were all curious about their day's harvest.

Many people knew that Yun Jin and her friends had gone fishing, and they were all waiting for them to come back empty-handed so they could laugh at them. But instead of laughing at them, they ended up being the ones who were jealous.

"You caught so many?"

"What kinds of fish are there? This is a crucian carp, and this is a common carp?"

"Oh dear, my Tiger loves to eat fish. Look at all these you caught, you can't possibly eat them all. How about..."

Yun Jin slapped away the hand that was grabbing the fish without any politeness: "If you want to eat, go fishing yourself. Didn't you say you'd never have fish to eat in your life and that you wouldn't want to go fishing?"

The boastful sister-in-law was proven wrong, but she still shamelessly said, "It's not good for pregnant women to eat too much fish."

"You'll die if you talk too much, why don't you shut up?" Yun Jin wasn't going to tolerate her.

The sister-in-law's face turned green after being rebuked.

Yun Jin glared at her and left with Li Aimei.

The other women who wanted fish, seeing that this woman had been rebuffed, wisely kept quiet and immediately gave their older children, who only knew how to play around, a good scolding when they got home.

The children were almost in tears from being scolded. When they heard how many fish Yun Jin had caught, they became envious and said they wanted to go fishing that afternoon too.

Feng Qianqian overheard the neighbor scolding the child for only knowing how to play around and not going fishing for a treat. Curious, she inquired and learned that Yun Jin had caught more than a dozen fish, each weighing about three to five pounds.

Feng Qianqian scoffed, "Small fish are all bones, what's so good about them? When I was in Beijing, I ate sea fish, which had few bones and tender meat. Those were the fish I could really eat. You've obviously never eaten anything good."

The older woman nodded in agreement: "That's right, how could Commander He, such an upright and honest man, marry such a wife?"

"You have no idea, she actually made Commander He stay up all night cracking walnuts. How could she have the nerve? Commander He is such a good person. He has a high salary, is young, tall and handsome, and he's from Beijing. Marrying him is the worst thing that could happen to anyone."

Feng Qianqian seemed to have found a kindred spirit, chatting and laughing with her sister-in-law, with crickets chirping behind her back. It was a scene of true friendship, where a thousand cups of wine are not enough.

Unaware that crickets were chirping behind her, Yun Jin returned home with Li Aimei and saw Gao's sister-in-law cooking. Yun Jin said, "Sister-in-law, can I borrow your fire for a bit? I'll give you three fish, do you want crucian carp or carp?"

Sister-in-law Gao leaned over for a look and exclaimed in surprise, "Oh my, you really caught some fish! Okay, my husband likes braised carp, so let's have three carp tonight to make an extra dish."

Then he asked, "How do you plan to eat your fish?"

Yun Jin said, "I'll buy a block of tofu tomorrow and make a crucian carp and tofu soup."

Sister-in-law Gao smiled and said, "Look, I just happened to buy three pieces of tofu today. I was going to make tofu with scallions tonight, but you don't have to wait until tomorrow. I'll give you one piece of tofu so you can stew it today."

"Thank you, sister-in-law!" Yunran asked Li Aimei to catch three large carp for Sister-in-law Gao.
