But the monster seemed confused and began to circle around him.
But as it was spinning, it seemed like it was pulled somewhere and began to fall to the ground uncontrollably.
Bai Di stared at the black-scaled monster writhing in pain, and his chest suddenly felt tight for no reason.
It held its "head"—if that twisted protrusion could be called a head—and let out a silent roar. The scales on its body opened and closed violently, and the golden lines flickered, as if some uncontrolled energy was rampaging through its body.
Its body continued to expand, its bones twisted and deformed, sharp bone spurs rose on its spine, its tail stretched and split, and finally it turned into an indescribable strange shape.
Not like a dragon, not like a snake, but more like...
Bai Di’s breathing stagnated.
——It was more like what happened to his eldest brother in his memory at the tavern in the forest.
Bai Di's fingertips unconsciously stroked the strap of his sweatshirt, the tip of the strap was inlaid with a metal button.
The cold touch should have woken him up, but it seemed so illusory at this moment.
At that moment, he felt that he was standing at the edge of the training ground. The halo of morning light blurred the outlines of the surroundings, allowing him to see clearly his three companions training.
The whole world looks like a water-soaked oil painting.
He stood alone on the side.
Those dreams—no, perhaps they should be called fragments of memories—always visit me late at night.
Severus, the twisted being that hovers in dreams, its scales change color with each breath, sometimes like rotting bruises, sometimes like solidified blood scabs.
What disturbed him most was that whenever the monster opened its nebula-filled compound eyes, he could always see the shadow of his elder brother in them.
"Bai Di?"
Hearing his teammates' calls from behind, he turned around suddenly and found himself facing the tall, sharp black building.
Hallucination, hallucination again.
Ever since that mission, this feeling of dislocation has been with me.
He raised his hand and pressed his temple. The blood vessels there were beating wildly, as if something wanted to break out of its shell.
He knew exactly where he was.
But his mind seemed to be betraying him.
The academy bell rang, but the familiar tone was now distorted into the inhuman whisper in dreams.
Bai Di looked down at his hands, which became as white and soft as moonlight - exactly the same as Di Lin's hands in his dream.
"Whose memory is this..."
He muttered to himself, his voice echoing in an eerie harmony in the empty bathroom.
The liquid flowing from the faucet was rusty, reminding him of the wriggling blood vessels in Severus's lair in his dream.
The words "take care of yourself" that my eldest brother said before he left are still lingering in my ears, but why does every syllable now sound like some kind of ancient curse?
The training knife slipped from its sheath, and the sound of it hitting the ground should have been crisp, but it was as dull as a corpse falling to the ground.
Bai Di squatted down and saw his own reflection on the blade - his left eye had turned into Di Lin's dark gold at some point.
In the distance, he heard Ma Tuan's voice calling him to have lunch, but he could clearly hear the rustling sound of Severos's multi-arthropod crawling mixed in.
The dusk light streamed in through the stained glass, stretching his shadow into a distorted, monstrous shape.
Bai Di stood at the door of the dormitory, hesitating to push it open.
He was rarely hesitant.
He was afraid that when he opened the door he would see the slime-covered nest in his dream, afraid to see his eldest brother standing in the middle of the room, his back cracked and the tentacles of Severus extending from his body - just as real as he had witnessed on the last mission.
Bai Di's temples were throbbing, and the memories surging in his mind almost cracked his skull.
He squatted down somewhat painfully, digging his fingers deep into his hair, as if this could suppress those crazy flashbacks.
But the next second, a pair of huge claws covered with black scales suddenly supported him, holding him steady with gentle but irresistible force.
Bai Di looked up in a daze, and met the monster's molten golden vertical pupils that were so close to him - there was a hint of human panic in them, and even a bit of... guilt?
"...Did you do that on purpose?" Bai Di asked in a hoarse voice, his voice still hoarse from the shock of memory.
The monster blinked rapidly, then suddenly spread out its chest scales in a flattering manner.
Bai Di's breathing stagnated - inside that pitch-black cavity, there was actually a miniature black city, which was exactly the same as the towering spire complex in front of him, but it was proportionally shrunk countless times.
What is even more shocking is that countless golden silks flow out from the monster's body, entwining the miniature city, interspersed with sparkling jewels and glazed tiles, reflecting a luxurious halo in the darkness.
It's almost like...
"How come you hide everything in your body?" Bai Di stretched out his hand unconsciously, his fingertips passing through the flowing golden silk.
It feels cool and silky to the touch, yet has the warmth of life.
The monster made a low humming sound and gently rubbed his wrist with the tip of its nose, as if asking for credit.
Bai Di suddenly understood something.
Those fragmented images in the dream, the huge twisted jellyfish and sea otter, and the "city within the gate" guarded by the legend of Severus - it turned out that they were all real.
Big Brother might have hidden something important inside this monster, and this miniature city might be...
"Keys," he muttered.
Maybe if he could figure all this out, he would finally understand what had happened.
Now let’s not talk about solving the problems of my companions. Only after solving my own doubts and difficulties can I have more energy to help my companions.
