“He has been doing very well these past years. He is now a prominent figure in Beijing, the president of the Lu Group. His only regret is that he was unable to protect his mother back then.”
Bai Jingyue smiled bitterly, tears slowly welling up in her still charming eyes, and she couldn't help but redden her eyes.
Tang Li didn't know what to say for a moment.
Since Bai Jingyue remembered, she would rather live a lonely life in this remote little place than be a burden to her son.
Little did he know, this would become a knot in Lu Jianshen's heart for many years!
Bai Jingyue sighed, "It's because I, as his mother, don't want to be a burden to him. It has nothing to do with him. He's had too much suffering."
In his earlier years, Lu Chengyi always used himself as a tool to target Lu Jianshen in every possible way.
Bai Jingyue was very worried that once she returned to Lu Jianshen's side, she would become his weakness.
But clearly, the hard times are over and the good times are finally here.
Tang Li did not clearly explain her identity, nor did she clarify her relationship with her ex-husband. There was nothing more to say.
She only said that she was Lu Jianshen's friend and her name was Tang Li.
Lu Jianshen has now achieved great success and wants to bring his mother home.
The woman did not agree immediately, but instead said that she felt more comfortable staying in the countryside.
"Now that he's a high-status person, my existence as his mother is just a reminder to him that his past shameful deeds, and even the fact that he's an illegitimate child, might be exposed."
"Xiao Tang, knowing that he is doing well makes me feel fulfilled. I don't necessarily need to go and reunite with him. Just tell him that I'm doing well now."
Tang Li asked, puzzled, "Auntie, don't you want to see him one last time and have your family reunite?"
Bai Jingyue shook her head, her lifeless eyes clearly filled with sorrow.
“Girl, if I go back, he is now in a high position, and people will inevitably gossip about him, and even his childhood stories will be dug up.”
At this point, Bai Jingyue lowered her eyes.
She didn't want to be a burden to her son any longer, and knowing that he was doing well was enough for her.
Tang Li shook her head and said, "Auntie, that's a part of his life, inevitable and unavoidable. Suffering is never a humiliation."
The woman sighed deeply and remained silent, seemingly still hesitant and conflicted.
"The weather is getting colder and colder, and it's going to snow heavily soon. Girl, if you don't leave tonight, you might not be able to leave tomorrow!"
Tang Li shook her head; she knew she wouldn't have time to leave tonight.
Before long, snowflakes began to fall from the sky, large flakes fluttering down.
It's really snowing!
Judging by the momentum, this snowfall won't be light.
Tang Li realized that her newly bought phone was out of battery, so she borrowed a power outlet from Bai Jingyue to charge it.
She had to call Yan Hui first to make sure he was safe and sound.
The phone rang for a long time before being answered; the signal was poor, with a constant hissing sound and intermittent connection.
"Yan Hui, I'm fine, don't worry. Where are you now? Come over here, I'll send you my location."
Tang Li tried to send her location via WeChat, but failed.
The message kept going in circles, and even her voice was intermittent.
It was rare for Yan Hui to speak a long sentence.
"The signal here is too weak. Tell me what features your current location has, or send me a photo. The location is not accurate right now."
Even when speaking on the phone, the voice is intermittent and disjointed.
Tang Li thought for a moment, took a picture, and sent it over.
However, the photos kept showing as being transmitted and never actually got sent.
“Come here, there’s a big jujube tree in front of my door, and a doghouse next to it. There are red couplets pasted on the wooden door, and there are houses on both sides, the bricks and tiles of which are red…”
As Tang Li described the situation, Yan Hui followed her directions and found Bai Jingyue's house.
Tang Li said she had found the person she was looking for, which surprised Yan Hui; everything had gone so smoothly.
Tang Li never expected that after all the despair, a new path would open up, but Bai Jingyue was already blind.
Bai Jingyue went back to the kitchen to prepare dinner for the guests, while Tang Li took Yan Hui and planned to go to the village store to buy some vegetables.
In this freezing weather, with the wind howling, the vegetables in the garden are all frozen.
The two walked towards the village store at the entrance, being extra careful to avoid slipping, while chatting.
"So you plan to take her back to Beijing next, right?"
Tang Li nodded. She did have this idea, but the roads were blocked by heavy snow and it would be difficult to travel, so she had to wait.
It's unclear how long this extreme weather will last, or whether the snow on the roads will freeze into ice or melt.
And what are Yan Hui's plans?
Tang Li turned to Yan Hui, "Yan Hui, what are your plans? Where do you intend to go next?"
The boy's eyes were downcast, and he looked faintly sad, which made Tang Li feel sorry for him.
"Could you take me with you?" Yan Hui seemed a little embarrassed to ask, but still managed to get the question out.
Tang Li thought for a moment and nodded.
She was willing, but Yan Hui was an adult after all, and he couldn't let others make decisions for him.
"What are your plans next? I can take you to Beijing with me, but are you planning to stay and work as my bodyguard, or will you go out and find a job?"
Tang Li sighed and advised Yan Hui, "I feel that at your age, you have unlimited potential for the future, so being a bodyguard is not suitable for you."
Yan Hui remained silent. He had gone abroad to study for three years, and when he returned, he had no home left.
