“Of course it’s ours,” the cousins said, bursting into laughter.
Fourth Aunt pulled Li Xiyue aside and asked, "Yueyue, are you going back to the countryside after the New Year?"
"Yes, I will." Li Xiyue replied as she took the chicken cake from Lin Min.
Auntie said with heartache, "Life in the countryside is so hard. Why don't you ask Ah Xun to help you get a spot at the Workers, Peasants and Soldiers University and come to Beijing to study?"
Chu Xun, who was watching the old man and his second uncle play chess, came over and said, "Fourth Aunt, it's safer for Yueyue to stay in the countryside for now."
The whole family are smart people; they understood immediately.
Fourth Aunt patted Li Xiyue's hand, "You've worked hard, child."
“It’s not hard work for me,” Li Xiyue shook her head. “I work as a barefoot doctor in the countryside, treating patients and such. I don’t have to do farm work, and the villagers are all very kind to me.”
"That's because you're capable. Capable people can get by anywhere," Auntie said with a smile.
Everyone nodded.
Dinner was served shortly after, and Li Xiyue asked, "Isn't Yicheng coming back for dinner?"
“He called back and said he ate out, so I’ll leave him alone,” Aunt Tian replied.
My cousins brought the dishes to the table, and it was such a lavish feast, like a Manchu Han Imperial Feast.
With fine wine and delicious food, the whole family sat down around the table, serving food to Li Xiyue, the birthday girl, until the bowls were piled high.
Li Xiyue ate each dish one by one. Every dish was delicious. Every man in the Chu family had a few signature dishes. Marrying into the Chu family was a blessing.
"Auntie, here's a chicken leg for you." Chu Wen ran to Li Xiyue's side with his own bowl, stood on tiptoe, and shoveled the chicken leg from his bowl into hers.
Li Xiyue asked, "Xiao Wenwen, why aren't you eating?"
"It's Auntie's birthday, Auntie should eat," Chu Wen said in a childish voice.
"Thank you, Xiaowen."
"Auntie, you are so beautiful. When Wenwen grows up, he wants to marry you."
Li Xiyue was admiring how sensible the child was when she picked up a piece of food to eat, and then she heard his childish words and almost bit her tongue.
Everyone who was drinking choked, and coughing echoed across the table.
Lu Shishi felt incredibly ashamed, and her expression seemed to say, "I don't want this child anymore."
Chu Xun picked up the little brat and placed him on his lap, asking with displeasure, "Who am I?"
"Uncle."
"Who is Auntie?"
"My uncle's girlfriend."
"Your aunt is already my boyfriend, so you can't marry her."
"Why? My aunt is so beautiful, I want to marry her."
He was only four years old and didn't understand any of this. His childish words made everyone burst into laughter.
Chu Xun, of course, couldn't hold a grudge against a child, so he returned the chicken leg from Li Xiyue's bowl to him and told him to go back to his own little table to eat.
Chu Wen didn't understand why he hadn't given away his chicken leg. Was he wrong to want to marry his beautiful aunt?
The little boy couldn't understand it at all. Looking at his older brothers who were trying not to laugh, he asked, "Brothers, when you grow up, do you want to marry a pretty auntie?"
"We won't marry him, we dare not." The older children, sensing the look in their uncle's eyes and driven by a strong will to survive, quickly said.
Chu Wen held the large chicken leg, his young face serious, and said, "If you won't marry him, I will!"
Chu Xun, who had just drunk a glass of wine, nearly choked to death.
