Chapter 12
He took an onion out of the refrigerator, handed it to her, and said, "Try it?"
Gu Qingyue felt that the way he treated her was like treating a seven or eight-year-old child, throwing an onion at her and as if saying, "Go and play by yourself."
In the following time, Gu Qingyue did not make things worse. She followed his instructions, peeled off the rough skin of the onion, washed it under the faucet, then cut it into four pieces with a knife, soaked it in water for about ten minutes, and took it out. Sure enough, the stinging effect on her eyes was gone.
She was eager to try it out, like a child who had suddenly discovered a new toy.
Gu Hengsheng couldn't help but shake his head and laugh.
Gu Qingyue heard his laughter and said, "Am I a little funny?"
"No, it's very interesting," he said.
Gu Qingyue stared at him carefully for two seconds, but found she couldn't make out any clues. She sighed, pursed her lips and said, "I'll just take it as a compliment."
"Sincerely." Gu Hengsheng emphasized.
Gu Qingyue was curious for a moment and blurted out, "You must have a lot of girlfriends, right?"
After she finished speaking, Gu Qingyue realized that she had said something wrong. After all, he was the elder, and as a junior, it seemed a bit inappropriate to inquire about his love life.
Fortunately, his expression did not change. He lowered his eyes to look at her and said, "Who told you?"
"No one, I just think you are very considerate in your actions. As a gentleman, you should be very popular with women." Gu Qingyue flattered him to make amends.
Gu Hengsheng saw what she was thinking and smiled: "Say good words?"
"No." She replied to him with what he had just said, her eyes sincere, "I really mean it."
Gu Hengsheng stared at her face with a faint smile in his eyes and said, "Qingyue, you are very interesting."
"Really?" Gu Qingyue muttered to herself, "When I was little, many elders, upon seeing me for the first time, would say, 'This child is too dull.' 'Dull' simply means dull, uninspired, and not good at speaking."
"They made a mistake." He finally concluded.
Half an hour later, the two sat down at the dining table.
Gu Qingyue was in a good mood today and had a better appetite. After finishing a plate of creamy carbonara pasta, she said, "It's delicious. Do you cook often?"
Gu Hengsheng said: "When I was abroad, I sometimes did it, but not often."
Gu Qingyue hummed, lowered her head to look at her phone, and suddenly heard the sound of Gu Hengsheng clearing the dishes across from her. She raised her head and said hesitantly, "Shall I help you wash it?"
Gu Hengsheng stared at her for a while. Gu Qingyue was frightened by his gaze. Then she heard him sigh and say, "Sit down. You probably don't mean what you said."
Gu Qingyue chuckled: "You probably really can read minds."
Gu Hengsheng was washing dishes in the kitchen, while Gu Qingyue was sitting in the living room reading a magazine.
During this time, Gu's mother called and asked her where she was.
Gu Qingyue replied: "I'm at Third Uncle's place. I just finished lunch and will be back soon."
She hung up the phone, and Gu Hengsheng came out, wiping his hands with a tissue: "Send you home?"
"good."
After they left the house, Gu Qingyue asked, "Why didn't you bring the cat back?"
"I'll have someone bring it to you in a few days."
"What's it called?"
"No name," he said.
Gu Qingyue said "oh" and asked again, "Are you planning to take up a position at S University?"
“It’s still under consideration.”
"If you teach, your attendance rate will probably be good."
Gu Hengsheng held the steering wheel with one hand and smiled faintly: "What do you mean?"
"You have a good-looking face." Gu Qingyue said truthfully.
"Students nowadays only care about the teacher's appearance, not his or her knowledge."
"It's the age of appearance." Gu Qingyue said, looking at him again, "At least I know that you are not just a beautiful face."
"Qingyue, it's just a meal." He smiled, "No need to flatter me like that."
Gu Qingyue looked out the window and muttered softly, "My heart is set on the bright moon."
Gu Hengsheng smiled and said, "My fault."
Gu Hengsheng sent Gu Qingyue to the door of her home, but did not go in to sit for a while.
Mother Gu and Su Yanli returned home in the evening. When Gu Qingyue entered, only Aunt Xu was home. "You're back."
"Um."
"Why didn't you ask your third uncle to come in and sit for a while?"
"He still has things to take care of." Gu Qingyue said, "Aunt Xu, I'll go upstairs first."
After sending Gu Qingyue off, Gu Hengsheng drove to the airport to pick up Gu Sang.
Gu Sang is a drama actress. This time, she has a performance in Huai City. The crew will not arrive until next Friday, but she came a full week early. Gu Sang got in the car and said, "Third brother, I can stay at your place for the next two days, is that okay?"
"Not staying in a hotel?"
"I met my enemy and came to hide at your place for two days." Gu Sang avoided the main point.
Gu Hengsheng drove to his residence. Gu Sang looked out the window and asked, "Is Xiao Qingyue's school nearby?"
"It's about a half-hour drive."
"Then find Xiao Qingyue in a few days and have a meal together," said Gu Sang.
Gu Qingyue had been spending the past two days in the library, researching. Professor Chen, who taught her poetry class, had assigned an assignment: to analyze poems from a certain period of time as a midterm test for the semester.
Gu Qingyue bit the end of her pen, several heavy books piled beside her notebook. Her brow furrowed slightly, her thoughts halting as she worked through the outline. Her mind felt like a tangled mess of yarn, unable to process her thoughts. She felt dizzy and heavy, as if she'd drunk some alcohol.
This feeling was very similar to when I was a kid, stuck on a math problem and couldn't figure it out. Gu Qingyue sighed softly, feeling a little frustrated. She looked out the window, intending to relax for a while.
Suddenly, someone tapped the table twice.
Gu Qingyue looked up and saw Song Xiaoshu standing beside the table, looking down at her with a smile on his face: "What a coincidence."
Gu Qingyue was surprised and lowered her voice: "Why are you here?"
Song Xiaoshu raised the book in his hand and said, "Come and borrow a book."
The book cover was covered in a few words in foreign languages, the words obscure and difficult to understand, not common vocabulary. The cover was torn at a corner, and it looked very old. Gu Qingyue rested her chin on one hand, looking up with a confused expression, and pointed at the book cover with a finger: "I don't understand, what book is it?"
"Physics books." Song Xiaoshu glanced at the notebooks and reference books piled in front of her and said, "Are you writing a paper?"
"Yeah." She frowned and complained, "It's so annoying."
Song Xiaoshu looked at his watch and said, "Why don't we go get something to eat to distract ourselves? I heard the clay pot rice in your West District cafeteria is pretty good."
"That's a good suggestion." Gu Qingyue happily closed her notebook and asked him, "Our school doesn't lend out books. Do you have a student card?"
Song Xiaoshu shook his head and said unconcernedly: "Not really, I'll just make a few more trips when the time comes."
"Bring the book with you and I'll borrow it for you," Gu Qingyue said. "You can't guarantee that the book will be on the shelf every time you come back, waiting for you to read it."
"Is it not troublesome?" Song Xiaoshu asked.
"It's just a piece of cake."
"Thank you." Song Xiaoshu chuckled, looked at Gu Qingyue's back, and reached out to touch the borrowed student card in his pocket.
The two left the library and went to the cafeteria.
The library is near the West District, so it’s not far from the cafeteria. The two of them walked for about ten minutes and arrived at the West District cafeteria.
It was just time for classes to end, and when they arrived, there were already quite a few people queuing in the cafeteria.
There was a long line at the clay pot rice window.
Gu Qingyue asked: "Which one do you want to eat?"
"Any recommendations?" Song Xiaoshu asked.
"The sausage one is pretty good, but I wonder if you like it?"
"Try it," he said.
The two bought the food and chose an empty table to sit down.
Gu Qingyue didn't have the clay pot rice, but ordered a plate of mixed noodles and wontons. Gu Qingyue picked up her chopsticks and took a bite. The noodles were too salty. She drank a sip of the soup, but it was too bland.
Gu Qingyue inexplicably missed the creamy bacon pasta and spicy soup made by Gu Hengsheng. Thinking of this, she found the food in front of her even more difficult to eat.
Song Xiaoshu saw that she had taken a few bites and didn't seem to want to eat much, so he said, "Not to your liking?"
"It's a bit salty." Gu Qingyue said truthfully.
"How about going to buy something else to eat?"
"Forget it, let's not waste it." Gu Qingyue held the spoon and took another sip of soup.
Song Xiaoshu thought her reluctance was a little cute, so he smiled and said, "If you go to Macau someday, I'll take you to eat local snacks, how about that?"
"Is it a matter of reciprocity?" Gu Qingyue pointed at the clay pot rice in front of him and asked with a smile.
"Yes." Song Xiaoshu smiled slightly. "After all, it's rude not to reciprocate."
