Chapter 49
The pounding of heavy rain and the long blast of a horn mingled in her ears, making her ears ring and feeling a vague dizziness. It was like her first time riding in a car as a child, dizzy and with a churning in her stomach.
Gu Qingyue had never thought that this moment would be so difficult to endure. Someone had confessed to her before, and she wondered if he had the same mentality.
Gu Hengsheng slowly withdrew his gaze. He looked at the traffic ahead, his hand gripping the steering wheel, the blue veins slightly bulging. After a long pause, he said, "Qingyue, I can only be your third uncle. There's nothing else I can be."
His words were very clear and distinct.
Unwilling to give in, Gu Qingyue rose slightly and leaned closer to him. His facial features, with the exception of his jawline, showed a hint of hardness, and there was a faint stubble beneath his eyes. As her breath met his, he reached out and grasped her wrist, tightening his grip slightly. The cuffs of her once neatly ironed suit wrinkled for no apparent reason, like those unspoken metaphors.
Gu Hengsheng held her wrist, distanced themselves from each other, and blocked the kiss.
In front of her was a black bridge car with two scarlet taillights. In the misty rain, it seemed as if someone was staring at her eyes with two beams of light. Gu Qingyue stared at it for a long time and felt her eyes were sore.
Gu Qingyue never thought that one day she would feel so uncomfortable being next to Gu Hengsheng. She was so eager to escape that she gripped her seat belt tightly and tried to control her emotions: "I want to get off."
"Qingyue, it's still raining outside."
His voice was still gentle, without any hint of abnormality, reminding her that even if she wanted to throw a tantrum, she had to understand the current situation clearly.
Gu Qingyue didn't say anything, and felt her heart sink a little more. Gu Hengsheng looked at her. Her eyes fell on the window, and her eyelashes trembled slightly.
The atmosphere in the car was very quiet until the car stopped outside the Su residence. Gu Qingyue immediately opened the car door. She pulled it twice with all her strength, but the door did not move at all and remained tightly closed.
She turned to look at him, her eyes red, and said in a pleading tone, "Uncle San, please give me some face."
Gu Hengsheng stared at her for a moment, then reached out and took out an umbrella from behind, saying, "It's still raining, take your umbrella with you."
Gu Qingyue pushed open the door and changed her shoes in the entrance hall. Aunt Xu came out from the living room: "Why are you off work so late? Have you had dinner?"
Gu Qingyue was in no mood and said casually, "I've eaten."
She ran upstairs, returned to her room, closed the door, and threw herself on the bed. Gu Qingyue buried her face in the soft quilt and felt warmth in her eyes.
The windows of the room were not closed, and the rain was blown in by the wind. The white curtains were blown out by the wind, wet by the rain, and then fell heavily on the window sill.
Gu Hengsheng returned to his residence and took off his leather shoes. He left his keys on the shoe cabinet, did not turn on the light, and sat down on the sofa. His shoulders suddenly drooped, like a taut line, and suddenly softened. He sighed faintly.
He leaned back on the sofa, took the cigarette box and lighter from the coffee table, put a cigarette to his mouth, and after a moment, he took the cigarette out of his mouth and put it back into the cigarette box.
The phone on his coat buzzed. Gu Hengsheng took the coat and took out the phone. It was Su Xi calling. He calmed down a little, put his hand on his brow, rubbed it, and asked, "What's the matter?"
"She's crying."
Gu Hengsheng remained silent, and the other end continued, "You just saw through her thoughts a long time ago. If that's the case, why didn't you get away from her earlier?"
The lights were still on on the balcony, casting a square grid on the white wall. Gu Hengsheng stared at the square and felt as if he was framed.
The next day, Gu Qingyue woke up early. She filled a tub of hot water in the bathroom and soaked in it. Feeling refreshed, she went downstairs. Aunt Xu had already prepared breakfast. Seeing her coming down, she asked curiously, "Why did you get up so early today?"
Gu Qingyue sat down at the dining table. She picked up the cup and drank some milk. She said, "I went to bed early last night."
Aunt Xu sighed and teased her, "Since you started your internship, you've finally started eating breakfast properly. Before, when I called you, you'd dawdle until nine o'clock before getting out of bed."
There were footsteps at the stairs. It was Su Xi who had woken up. She sat down next to Gu Qingyue and said, "You look so bad, why don't you take a day off today?"
Gu Qingyue shook her head and said nonchalantly, "I forgot to close the window when I fell asleep last night and got cold. It's nothing serious."
"Wait a minute, I'll drive you to work."
"When I graduated from high school, I should have listened to your advice and learned to drive. Now I realize how inconvenient it is to go to work every day without a car."
Su Xi said: "It's not too late to learn now."
Gu Qingyue nodded.
After they finished breakfast, Su Xi sent Gu Qingyue to the company and asked, "Was it Hengsheng who sent you back last night?"
Hearing this, a hint of sadness flashed in Gu Qingyue's eyes. She pursed her lips and said, "Yes."
Su Xi asked, "Have you made your position clear to him?"
Gu Qingyue looked at Su Xi: "How do you know?"
Su Xi stared at the traffic in front and said, "When you went to bed last night, the door was not closed tightly."
Gu Qingyue looked a little worried, and Su Xi comforted her: "Don't worry, Auntie doesn't know about this."
Gu Qingyue remained silent, so Su Xi urged her, "Qingyue, do you want to study abroad for a few years? After you've left here for a while, and your mood has calmed down, you might think that he's just a stage in your life. I think you should think about this carefully right now."
Gu Qingyue looked out the window and said, "I'll think about it."
Gu Qingyue arrived at the company and ran into Editor-in-Chief Xu downstairs in the lobby. Editor-in-Chief Xu asked, "When did you leave last night?"
"Seven o'clock, how did you know?"
Editor-in-Chief Xu said, "The security guard outside the door said so."
Gu Qingyue hummed in silence. Editor-in-Chief Xu looked her up and down and said, "Why do you look so down today? Is the rain affecting your mood?"
Gu Qingyue frowned, pretending to be relaxed, and said, "My confession was rejected. Please allow me to be sad for a while."
Editor-in-Chief Xu became interested and asked, "Who is the other party?"
"My third uncle."
Editor-in-Chief Xu was very surprised. He raised his eyebrows and said jokingly, "I didn't realize you were so avant-garde."
Gu Qingyue smiled bitterly and explained softly: "Actually, I have no blood relationship with him."
Editor-in-Chief Xu nodded in understanding, but then asked, "Is it the person who came to pick you up last time?"
The last time Gu Hengsheng came back to pick her up, Chief Editor Xu witnessed it and exclaimed that Gu Hengsheng had an extraordinary bone structure. Gu Qingyue was afraid that Chief Editor Xu had some bad intentions at that time.
"Yes, it's him."
"You have a good eye," Editor-in-Chief Xu said. "What are you going to do? Just give up?"
"I don't want to." Gu Qingyue said truthfully.
