Chapter 3

Suddenly, it started to rain lightly outside.

The pavilion was leaking air on all sides, and the wind brought in raindrops, which fell on my face and arms, making me feel a little cool.

Liang Wan touched the exposed half of her wrist and said, "This wind is really a bit cold. Let's go back to the house. It would be bad if we catch a cold."

A few people stood up, and there was another rustling noise in the pavilion.

Gu Hengsheng was looking at the lake at this moment, with one hand resting lightly on the back of the chair, and was talking to the person on the other end of the phone.

Gu Xin squatted on the ground and teased the orange cat. Liang Wan raised her hand and beckoned to Gu Xin: "Xinxin, stop teasing the kitten and come back to the house with your mother."

Hearing this, Gu Hengsheng said, "Wait a minute."

He turned around and walked to the rocking chair, handed the suit jacket draped over it to Liang Wan, and said, "Put it on Xinxin."

Liang Wan hesitated: "It's okay, it's just a few steps away, and the rain isn't that heavy."

Gu Hengsheng smiled slightly and touched Gu Xin's face with his hand: "Gu Xin is still sick, it's just a coat, so it doesn't matter if he gets wet."

Liang Wan was speechless. She had not expected Gu Hengsheng to be so considerate. She did not refuse and took Gu Hengsheng's coat. She bent down slightly and said to Gu Xin, "Xinxin, thank you, Third Uncle."

The little girl solemnly clasped her hands together and bowed to Gu Hengsheng, looking very naive. "Thank you, Third Uncle."

Gu Sang was amused and asked, "Gu Xin, where did you learn this etiquette of thanking people?"

Gu Xinren was a child with a lot of precociousness, and he said, "My grandma taught me that. She said that when you worship Buddha, you should put your hands together to show your piety. I put my hands together to worship my third uncle to show my sincerity."

These childish words caused a burst of laughter in the pavilion.

Gu Simin leaned on Gu Qingyue's shoulder and smiled softly, "Hey, Xinxin is so cute."

Gu Qingyue also smiled with her lips curved.

Gu Sang stood up and looked at Gu Qingyue and Gu Simin who were sitting on the stone chairs: "Aren't you two going back to the house?"

"I'd better finish this paper here. The breeze will clear my head." Gu Simin looked at Gu Qingyue again, shook Gu Qingyue's hand, and said coquettishly, "Qingyue, please sit with me for a while."

Gu Qingyue nodded softly.

Gu Sang didn't try to persuade him: "Don't stay too long, go back to the house when you're done."

"I know."

Gu Simin buried herself in her homework again. Bored, Gu Qingyue peeled a candy and popped it into her mouth. The sweetness was intense, and she frowned slightly. She pulled out two tissues, spat the candy onto them, and then crumpled them into a ball. Still lingering in her mouth, she poured herself a cup of tea and took a few sips, which only slightly diluted the sweetness.

The back of her foot suddenly felt heavy, and Gu Qingyue looked down to see the orange cat lying on her foot, eyes lazily closed. Gu Qingyue didn't dare to move, for fear of waking the orange cat.

Fifteen minutes later, Gu Hengsheng hung up the phone. He glanced at the orange cat nestled in Gu Qingyue's legs. The cat seemed to sense something and slowly opened its eyes. When it saw Gu Hengsheng, it suddenly ran to Gu Hengsheng's legs.

The instep of her foot relaxed, and a tingling sensation spread through her calf. Gu Qingyue's hand quietly dropped to her knee and gently rubbed her calf. She thought this little action was discreet, but he saw through it. He asked softly, "Are your legs numb?"

Gu Qingyue's face felt inexplicably hot, and she nodded softly.

Gu Hengsheng added, "It's quite heavy. Next time if it sleeps on your feet, just chase it away."

Gu Qingyue nodded.

Here, Liang Wan held Gu Xin's hand and returned to the room. Gu Linsheng had just come out from Mr. Gu's place. When he saw the mother and daughter entering the room,

Gu Linsheng waved to Gu Xin: "Xinxin, come here, Daddy."

Liang Wan said softly: "Let her go wash her hands first. She just played with the cat."

Liang Wan went into the bathroom, filled a basin with hot water, and added some cold water to make it just the right temperature. She said to the outside, "Let Xinxin in."

Gu Linsheng folded up Gu Xin's sleeves a few times, glanced at Liang Wan in the mirror, and asked casually, "Did you see Third Brother just now?"

When Gu Xin saw the water, she excitedly slapped her two little hands into the water, splashing water all over the two adults. Gu Xin giggled.

"I see, this dress belongs to Third Brother." Liang Wan squeezed some hand sanitizer and rubbed it on the back of Gu Xin's hand, saying, "Among all of you brothers, Third Brother is the most considerate."

Gu Linsheng smiled perfunctorily: "That's not the case. After all, he is the legitimate son and a legitimate member of the Gu family."

The atmosphere was tense for a moment. Liang Wan pursed her lips, realizing she had spoken out of turn, and said no more.

After Gu Simin finished the test paper, the two left the pavilion.

Gu Qingyue sneezed, and Gu Simin felt a little guilty. She said worriedly, "Hey, Qingyue, don't tell me you have a cold. If you do, I'll be guilty."

Gu Qingyue shook her head: "It's okay, my nose is just a little itchy."

Gu Qingyue returned to her mother's room. Her mother touched her hand, which was as cold as if it had just been pulled out of the water. She frowned and asked, "Why are you so cold?"

"I sat in the pavilion with Simin for a while and felt a little cold."

Mother Gu tapped Gu Qingyue's forehead with her finger and said helplessly, "Silly girl, if you're cold, why don't you come back and put on more clothes? Go lie down on the bed first. You have to have dinner with your grandfather later."

Gu Qingyue shook her mother's hand: "Mom, can I not go?"

Mother Gu laughed and tucked a strand of hair that had fallen on Gu Qingyue's cheek behind her ear: "I really don't know what you're afraid of."

After lunch, Gu Qingyue and her mother had nothing to do, so they lay on the bed, reading a book. In a daze, they fell asleep. When they woke up, it was dark outside and they couldn't tell the time.

Outside, there were faint whispers, hurried footsteps, and the sound of rain.

Gu Qingyue put her face on the pillow and listened for a while before slowly lifting the quilt and getting out of bed.

Gu's mother just happened to push the door open and came in. Seeing Gu Qingyue waking up and washing her face, she smiled and said, "It's time to prepare dinner. Let's go."

Gu Qingyue wrung out a towel, wiped her face quickly, threw the towel into the basin, and followed her mother out of the house.

Gu Qingyue felt that this meal was tantamount to torture. Even Gu Simin saw her, pulled her sleeve, and asked her quietly: "Qingyue, are you in a bad mood?"

Gu Qingyue raised her hand and touched her face, wondering if it was really that obvious. She smiled and said, "It's okay. I just woke up, so my face looks a little stinky."

"Are you in a bad mood when you wake up?" Gu Simin asked with her big eyes.

Gu Qingyue was slightly startled. Gu Simin didn't say anything more and pulled her to sit down with him. "Would you like to sit with me? This way, we can still chat in private."

Gu Simin took out a plate of pills from somewhere. She pressed down slightly with her fingertips, puncturing the tin foil, and put a black pill into her mouth.

Gu Qingyue asked, "Are you sick?"

"No." Gu Simin shook her head, then smiled slyly and said in a low voice, "Digestive tablets. After all, this meal is not easy to digest."

Gu Qingyue was amused by her.

Gu Simin's lips curved slightly: "You don't like occasions like this either, right?"

Gu Qingyue originally thought that this meal would be very uncomfortable, but fortunately, Gu Simin was by her side, and she sat with the younger generations, so she was able to cope with it.

After dinner, a few young people set up a table and played cards.

Gu Qingyue didn’t know how to play, so she sat and watched for half an hour. She felt a little bored and decided to go out for a walk.

The rain had stopped by now, and the air was filled with the fishy smell of grass after the rain.

The courtyard was quite large, and there was also a library. Relying on her vague memories, Gu Qingyue walked towards the library. The lanterns hanging under the corridor were blown by the wind, hitting Xuan'er.

It had just rained, and a patch of water had accumulated on the bluestone slabs. The shadow of the red lantern fell on the water, and the shadows were hazy, like red pieces of paper scattered on the ground.

Near the library, a few steps away, I saw two figures faintly visible on the fake rock mountain, a man and a woman. The man's back was tall and straight, almost covering the woman's figure.

Just as Gu Qingyue turned to leave, she heard a few blushing murmurs from the other side. Gu Qingyue's face flushed, and in her hurried steps, she kicked over a pot of plants at her feet, making a noise.

Gu Qingyue subconsciously turned her head and vaguely caught a glimpse of an emerald green jade bracelet on a white wrist. She panicked, and then her arm tightened, and she was pulled into a dark corner.

Gu Qingyue's back was pressed against the wall, a large hand covering her lips. Her heart was pounding, as if it was about to jump out of her throat. Above her head was a lush bamboo forest, and before her was the man's dark eyebrows and eyes.

"It's me." Gu Hengsheng released his hand that was covering her lips.

Gu Qingyue's eyelashes trembled slightly, and she was still frightened. She said in a low voice: "Third Uncle."

A voice came from the other side of the wall.

"Is anyone there?"

"No, the cat kicked over the potted plants."

The footsteps gradually faded away, and Gu Qingyue breathed a sigh of relief. She lowered her eyebrows and realized that her fingers were still tightly grasping the cuff of his shirt. Gu Qingyue felt like she had touched a hot potato, and she quickly retracted her hand.

"What did you see?" Gu Hengsheng stared at her.

Gu Qingyue raised her eyes and said hesitantly: "I see..."

Gu Hengsheng said calmly: "Qingyue, forget about this matter."

Gu Qingyue looked confused.

"Even if you see something, you have to pretend you didn't see it. Do you understand?"
