Chapter 29 Rental House

The old man shook his head. "You're out working alone, so you have to take care of yourself. It's late at night and you don't even have a place to stay. If you hadn't met me, you might be sleeping on the streets."

"Ah, yes." The man scratched his face awkwardly.

Then the old woman walked to a doorway that looked like an underground parking garage, except it had an iron gate.

The old man took out a bunch of keys, opened the door, and then led the man inside.

The man swallowed hard, feeling a little uneasy, but he didn't say anything and followed the old man.

"You can stay here."

Upon arriving in the basement, the old man casually pointed to a room and then turned and left.

"Oh, okay..."

Bang--

The old man had just stepped out when he closed the iron gate again.

"Is it like this in the city?" The man's expression was a little strange, but he didn't think much of it and pushed open the door to enter the room.

The room was very small, only a few square meters. There was a mattress on the floor, a table, a lamp, and a mop leaning against the door. That was all.

The man looked around and then lay down on the floor, turned off the light, and prepared to sleep. He was exhausted after a long day of running around and all he wanted to do was rest.

"This basement is dark and damp, but the rent is so low, it's not unacceptable. I need to save some money to support my mom in the future."

As he thought this to himself, he slowly closed his eyes.

Clang, clang, clang—

He had just closed his eyes when he heard various clattering sounds coming from outside the door; it was clear that they were coming from other rooms.

The man turned over and then prepared to go back to sleep.

Clang, clang, clang—

But then an even louder sound came from outside. The man tossed and turned, and finally couldn't take it anymore. He sat up and shouted at the door.

"Can't you let me sleep at this hour? It's so noisy!" Then the noise outside the door stopped abruptly.

The man breathed a sigh of relief and collapsed back onto the bed.

Clang, clang, clang—

But then the sound came back, and this time the man finally couldn't take it anymore. He got up, grabbed the mop leaning against the door, and stormed out angrily.

"Who is it! It's the middle of the night, you're not sleeping, but other people are!" He looked around and finally locked his attention on a roller shutter door.

He walked over and suddenly banged the broomstick twice, making a loud noise.

"Shut the fuck up! I need to look for a job tomorrow!"

Bang—

As soon as he finished speaking, the huge roller shutter door slowly rose up.

The man stood there stunned, but as the roller shutter slowly rose, his expression grew increasingly terrified, as if he had seen something horrifying.

"Ah!" the man cried out in fear, then threw the mop aside and ran toward the iron gate.

The man slammed into the iron gate with a bang, but he kept shouting.

"Landlord! Landlord! Open the door, I need help!"

"Here, here...!" But all he got in response was the growing chill behind him.

The man slowly turned his head away, and then, to his horrified surprise, a huge hand grabbed his upper body and dragged him into the darkness.

"Ah!" The man's scream echoed through the basement, before silence returned, leaving only a pool of blood slowly seeping from the darkness.

The next day, the old man calmly opened the iron gate.

Looking at the large pool of blood on the ground, the old man sighed softly, then picked up the mop that had fallen to the side and began to clean it up.

"My dear wife... after all these years, you're still so unclean..."

The bloodstains in the basement were quickly cleaned up, restoring it to its previous clean state, as if they had never appeared.
