Chapter Thirty-Seven: Testing

Ji Fengming and Xique, standing outside the carriage, felt both heartache and anger upon hearing these accusations and insults. However, this time, it was the entire population of the capital who were cursing Ji Fengyao. Even if they were furious, they couldn't just rush in and slaughter the entire capital.

"Why don't we go back to Vulture Village? This is too much!" Magpie was so angry that tears welled up in her eyes, and her voice trembled with sobs.

"Feng Yao, come down here. I'll take you back. We won't confess to this anymore!"

Ji Fengming then reined in the horses in front of the chariot, preventing it from moving forward.

Ji Fengyao lowered her head, momentarily lost in thought. Many times before, she and her master had experienced such scenes of being the center of attention. Back then, her master would lead her, coming and going calmly amidst the admiration of thousands, oblivious to the world's glitz and clamor.

Now, what was once revered by thousands has turned into universal scorn, but Master…

Suddenly, a slender, pale hand reached out to her side within her line of sight.

Ji Fengyao looked up and glanced to the side. Shang Xiye stared at her intently, his clear, beautiful eyes shimmering with a captivating light that revealed the world's splendor.

"I agree," he said, his lips curving slightly upwards like a flower bud just beginning to bloom.

"ah?"

Ji Fengyao was completely bewitched by the beauty before her, her mind a complete blank, and she didn't immediately understand what he was saying.

Shang Xiye leaned forward, gently taking her arm and pulling her left hand away. His slender fingers slowly moved from her wrist to her palm, grasping her hand. Then, with a gentle press and wave of his right palm, the small square table between them sank down to be level with the couch. The curtains of the bridal carriage were rolled up, and the three walls of the carriage slowly retracted with the soft click of the mechanism.

Before the scenery inside the carriage was fully revealed, he pulled her along, and they both moved a step closer to the center, so that they sat side by side.

When everyone's eyes turned in, what they saw was him and her sitting side by side.

Both were dressed in bright red wedding attire; one was tall and slender, while the other was petite and delicate.

He held her hand tightly, all his murderous aura vanished, and his eyes and brows softened. Although he was not as dashing as before, one could tell at a glance that there was no trace of forced or humiliated expression.

Beside him, the woman's face was veiled by a light gauze, her eyebrows were bright and her eyes were beautiful, and she was charming and radiant.

The sight of such a handsome man and beautiful woman, so gentle and harmonious, left everyone in front speechless. Even Ji Fengming and Xi Que, who were standing near the chariot, were dumbfounded.

"Go into town."

At Shang Xiye's command, the wedding procession resumed its journey into the city.

Aside from the stunned crowds lining the streets, even those hiding in the teahouses and taverns on either side, who had been watching the spectacle, were dumbfounded by the scene. What was the Ninth Prince doing? The Emperor and his various factions had gone to great lengths to stuff woman after woman into his residence, yet he hadn't touched a single one. Now, given a bandit, had he suddenly come to his senses, realizing resistance was futile, and was ready to give up entirely?

"Is he just putting on an act to make that person in the palace look good?" a man in blue said to the man in black robes opposite him.

The man in the black robe sneered, "Why don't you try and see?"

The man in blue narrowed his slender eyebrows and eyes, his smile sinister like that of a venomous snake. He waved his hand forward, and one of his attendants immediately turned and went downstairs, blending into the bustling crowd on the street.

Soon after, a shrill, loud shout rang out from the crowd: "That notorious bandit, how dare she stand on equal footing with our Goddess of War! Beat her!"

Immediately, a rotten egg with a blackened shell flew through the air and smashed straight into Ji Fengyao inside the carriage from the front.

Although the guards on both sides of the carriage, Ji Fengming, and Xi Que were on high alert, they could not protect them from this angle.
