Qin Changqing sat quietly in the room all night until the gray light leaked in through the window.
He stood up and pushed open the slightly dilapidated window. Outside the window was the yard of the farmhouse where they were staying. It was late spring and early summer, and the yard should have been dyed with fresh green of varying shades. However, due to the alien war on earth that had lasted for three years, the ravaged land was devastated and covered with thick smoke and ash from the war, and it was difficult to see such beautiful colors anymore.
"Dad." A child's voice sounded behind him. When Qin Changqing turned around, the nine-year-old boy had quickly climbed down from the bed, ran to his side and looked up at him. The child seemed to want to stay close to his father, but was nervous and didn't dare to get close.
"Yeah." Qin Changqing touched his head, "Go wash up, I'll make breakfast."
"Okay." His son Qin Xu nodded obediently, took two steps outside, and looked back at him, a trace of panic revealed on his thin little face.
Qin Changqing felt a pang in his heart, and scenes of the past flashed through his mind. He couldn't help but sigh, patted his shoulder soothingly, smiled at him and said, "Go, Dad promised you that he would never abandon you in the future."
Qin Xu's large, dark eyes scanned his face carefully, making sure he wasn't lying, and nodded seriously, "Yeah."
Qin Changqing also quickly washed up, went to the kitchen to fry some eggs and cooked a pot of porridge. When the father and son finally finished eating, many people came to the yard one after another.
When he opened the door, he saw that all the comrades in the team he had been following had arrived, but their eyes were bloodshot and their brows were tightly furrowed.
"Changqing!" Luo Yuhuan strode over to him when he heard the door open. His young face was filled with a mixture of fatigue, pain, hatred, anger and deep powerlessness, which made his face, which looked too young because of his excessive handsomeness, finally mature a little.
Compared with this group of comrades, Qin Changqing looked much better, still as handsome and clean as a nobleman. He smiled at his comrades, raised his hand and patted Luo Yuhuan on the shoulder, "I have decided to agree." His calm tone seemed to be saying that he decided to have potato fried rice in the evening.
Yet, upon hearing his answer, which might just save humanity, no one's face showed joy, only deep pain. The veins on their fists clenched at their sides from excessive exertion. Luo Yuhuan, standing closest to him, betrayed a deep hatred. Comrades, friends for life and death, brothers connected by blood! Yet, now, they had to personally send their comrades off on a shameful journey where their lives hung in the balance.
Separated by a banking system tens of thousands of light years away, perhaps, in this short human life, they will never be able to meet each other again.
The comrades, feeling humiliated and angry, could no longer suppress the roars in their throats. This was the helpless pain and release that belonged to men.
At the gate, several people suddenly appeared. They were the captain of Luo Yuhuan's team, the general of his unit, and two other men Qin Changqing didn't recognize, who looked like they were higher-ranking figures. They all stopped outside the courtyard fence, their sturdy faces etched with deep wrinkles, perhaps from the years of war.
Qin Changqing went over to greet the captain and wanted to lead them into the house, but the others shook their heads, indicating that the captain should talk to him, so they would not come in.
The captain's name was Zhao Bin, in his thirties, but at this moment he looked as if he were closer to forty. Zhao Bin followed him into the house. Luo Yuhuan and the others wanted to follow, but Zhao Bin frowned and waved away. Luo Yuhuan wanted to say something, but Zhao Bin didn't have time to respond and slammed the door shut.
"Captain." Qin Changqing touched the head of his son who quickly walked to his side, knowing that Zhao Bin must have something to say to him.
Zhao Bin remained silent for a long time, and Qin Changqing did not urge him.
After an unknown amount of time, Zhao Bin pinched his brows and opened his mouth. His hoarse voice uttered with some difficulty, "Thank you for agreeing, I..." He could not continue.
Instead, Qin Changqing smiled calmly and said, "It doesn't matter. This is my decision. You don't have to feel embarrassed about it."
Zhao Bin smiled wryly and shook his head. The fact that the entire planet's population of hundreds of millions needed to be traded for the freedom and dignity of one person was inherently absurd. However, the three-year war had rapidly reduced the human population by half. So, even this absurdity was now humanity's only hope...
Seeing that he couldn't continue, Qin Changqing took the initiative to say, "I don't know what I will encounter on this trip, and what kind of difficulties the Earth will face in the future, but that person..." He paused and continued, "I saw that the aliens who attacked the Earth, although very unwilling to see him interfere, still retreated, so I think his promise should be believed."
Zhao Bin still had a bitter smile on his face. What could he do if he couldn't believe it? The situation was stronger than him. When being invaded without any resistance, how could the human beings on Earth, who could hardly even set foot in outer space, say no?
"I'll rely on you from now on." Qin Changqing smiled at him. He didn't know what kind of future he would face, but he was a man. Since he had made a decision, there was no need to say more.
Zhao Bin frowned tightly, hesitated for a while, and suddenly handed a small medicine bottle to him. He gritted his teeth and lowered his voice into his ear and said, "If you really can't bear it..." He gritted his teeth and didn't say anything else.
Qin Changqing opened the bottle and saw at a glance that it contained a highly toxic drug. He looked up and saw Zhao Bin looking at him intently. Qin Changqing was so smart, how could he not understand? Aliens have powerful superpowers and their bodies are different from humans, so this poison might not work on them. Zhao Bin was a warrior who had fought in the sea of blood. He understood better than anyone that sometimes death was much more satisfying than life.
However, Qin Changqing still returned the things to him, smiled at him and said, "Have you forgotten that I am a doctor? As long as I want, I have many ways to do it."
Zhao Bin covered his eyes and was speechless.
Because the other party was in a hurry, Qin Changqing was only given one day to think about it. The other party would come to pick him up at noon today. Zhao Bin wanted to give Qin Changqing time to deal with his own affairs and was about to leave. However, as he left, he noticed a child standing next to Qin Changqing and frowned again. "This child..." Qin Changqing was about to go to a place where he didn't know what kind of dangers awaited him. No one wanted to watch him take a child into danger.
Qin Xu had always been quiet and reserved, but he had perfectly inherited his father's excellent genes. He was very smart and sensitive. From just these four words, he immediately understood what his father meant. He panicked and grabbed the corner of his father's clothes, afraid that he would abandon him. He begged, "Dad, you promised me."
Qin Changqing could calmly face his own uncertain future, but he could not refuse this son whom he owed so much. He nodded and said, "Yes, I promised you, and I will definitely do it this time."
Qin Xu carefully searched his face again, and felt a little relieved when he saw no emotion to deceive himself. He couldn't help but move closer to him.
Zhao Bin frowned, but he had also heard of Qin Xu's past, so he didn't try to persuade him in the end.
Sure enough, the other party came to pick people up on time at noon. Qin Changqing carried a large box containing some things given to him by his teammates, as well as various teaching materials and books that Qin Changqing asked Luo Yuhuan to help him collect. Then he walked out holding his son in one hand and dragging the large suitcase in the other.
The enemy's aircraft stopped in an open space. Qin Changqing stood at the entrance, looked back at his comrades, and then looked around at the mountains and rivers that raised him, as if he wanted to engrave them all deeply in his heart.
A butler-like figure walked out of the aircraft with a translator on his neck. He said to him gently, "Queen, the time is almost up." His Majesty the Emperor has clearly set a time. At that time, all the people of the eight clans must evacuate the earth, including them.
Qin Changqing nodded to him and was about to leave with his son when he suddenly heard someone calling his name from behind.
"Evergreen!"
Qin Changqing turned around and was a little surprised to see the person coming. He smiled and said, "Brother, you are here to see me off."
Qin Changqing's senior brother paused and handed him a silver medical kit. "Master asked me to bring this to you."
Qin Changqing was very surprised. A doctor's first aid kit was like a soldier's gun. They had worked together for many years, and not only did they use it smoothly, but they also had a deep affection for it. This first aid kit had been with Master for many years, and yet he would actually give it to him. Qin Changqing was speechless, then nodded and said with a smile, "Thank you Master for me. Please take good care of him for me in the future."
The senior brother didn't say a word, his lowered eyes fell on the cinnabar beads on Qin Changqing's wrist. When Qin Changqing said goodbye and left, he suddenly whispered behind him: "Don't you want to wait for that person anymore?" Didn't you say you would wait for him for the rest of your life?
Qin Changqing paused as he was leaving, then turned around and smiled at him, "I've been waiting for him for ten years, but he didn't come. I don't want to wait any longer."
