Chapter 52 We'll get our marriage certificate tomorrow.
"Miss, we've arrived." Momo was still lost in painful thoughts when the driver's words pulled her back to reality.
"Oh..." She looked down at her phone and then went to pay.
"Take care," the driver said goodbye.
Momo forced a smile, waved to her master, and said, "Goodbye."
After getting off the bus, she walked along the alley. With each step she took closer, her heart pounded with anxiety.
The warm winter sun was already shining on the courtyard gate, and Momo hesitated there for a long time. She didn't know how to hide this from her parents, nor did she know what reason she could give to make her mother believe that everything she said was true.
After a long while, Momo mustered up her courage and nervously pushed open the door. She peeked into the living room, only to find it empty.
Only the soft sound of music came from the gramophone.
Strange, why is no one here?
"Little Momo, you still know how to come back?" Su He returned from the garden and saw her coming back, so she smiled and pretended to complain to her.
Momo hesitated, unsure how to respond to her mother. But looking at her mother's expression, it seemed as if nothing had happened, and she appeared to be in a good mood.
Especially her gentle tone of voice, which remained the same as always.
"Have you eaten?" Su He asked again.
Momo nodded. She had no appetite at all, but to avoid worrying her, she lied anyway.
"Where is Xi over there? Did she go back to rest or go to work?" Su He asked again.
Momo was taken aback, unsure of what she meant. Did her mother think she was with Bian Xi last night?
If that's really her guess, that's good. At least for now, I don't have to worry about her.
"You're something else too. Bian Xi is already so tired from work, and you still want to climb a mountain overnight to watch the sunrise."
"In the end, I even lost my own phone."
"..." Momo was completely taken aback by her mother's series of words.
"What's wrong?" Su He walked closer to her and patted her head. "Why are you so listless? Are you too tired?"
Upon hearing her mother's gentle words, Momo's eyes immediately filled with tears. She reached out and hugged Su He tightly, burying her face in her arms.
"Mother……"
Su He noticed her unusual behavior and quickly asked, "What's wrong?"
"Why do you look so aggrieved?"
"No...it's nothing." Momo quickly wiped away her tears. Afraid that she wouldn't be able to explain herself clearly later, she quickly said, "I suddenly got sentimental. I was thinking about getting married soon, and I felt reluctant to leave you and Dad."
Su He didn't expect her to be upset about this, and smiled, "Then why are you still staying with Bian Xi late at night and refusing to go home? I bet all those tears of reluctance are fake."
Momo laughed, "No way, watching the sunrise was just a spur-of-the-moment decision, and the weather just happened to be nice today."
"Don't do that again next time. You made Mom worry for a long time last night. She was only relieved when she received Bian Xi's call," Su He reminded her again.
Momo nodded quickly, "I understand, I promise I won't let you worry anymore."
Su He smoothed her hair. "Okay."
Momo stayed at home all day. The sky outside had changed for some reason; it was gloomy and looked like it was going to rain.
She sat at her desk looking outside, and from her room window, she could see the alleyway outside.
She was waiting for Bian Xi to get off work. She had so much to say to him.
She was also waiting for news from the police, wondering what the outcome would be, and she was a little uneasy.
“Momo…” Su He knocked on the door from the outside.
Momo snapped out of her daze and called out towards the door, "Come in, Mom."
Su He pushed the door open and came in. "Bian Xi is here, and your Uncle Bian and Aunt Lin are here too. Hurry up and come downstairs."
Momo immediately stood up upon hearing this. She had been watching closely the whole time, but she hadn't seen Bian Xi pass by.
"Okay, I'll come down right now."
"Okay." Su He smiled. "Then I'll go down first, you hurry up."
"Okay, Mom." Momo went into the bathroom, looked in the mirror, touched up her slightly pale face with lipstick, and then prepared to go downstairs.
As soon as she opened the door, she saw Bian Xi standing there, holding a bouquet of pink roses, smiling gently at her.
"Momo, this is for you."
Looking at his still bright and warm smile, Momo felt a surge of guilt that welled up inside her, then overflowed, and finally her nose started to sting.
She took a deep breath and reached out to take it. "Thank you, Brother Bian Xi."
"Don't be so polite." Bian Xi smiled, then went into her room and closed the door.
He walked straight to the small sofa next to him and sat down.
Momo followed him inside, then placed the flowers on the desk. "Brother Bian Xi...did you call my mom and tell her I was with you last night?"
Bian Xi nodded.
Momo couldn't help but ask curiously, "How did you know I didn't come home last night?"
Bian Xi didn't answer; instead, she asked her, "Where were you last night?"
“To Fu Yungui.” Momo answered without hesitation. She never intended to lie to him. “Yesterday I went to send a package, and while I was waiting for a ride home, I was kidnapped by Shawa.”
Bian Xi took a deep breath, then said calmly, "Then... he didn't do anything to you, did he?"
"No," Momo answered crisply.
Bian Xi frowned, and the photo he received in the early morning suddenly flashed through his mind again. With a hint of doubt, he asked again, "Are you sure?"
Momo didn't know what he meant, but she nodded anyway. "He didn't do anything to me."
Bian Xi suddenly remembered that her period might not be over yet, and her expression softened. "That's good. It's good that you're not injured."
Momo snorted.
"Then why did he send you there?" Bian Xi looked at her, as if asking her, or as if muttering to herself.
It seems that, just as I suspected, Fu Yungui's actions were probably intended to let her parents know about this.
“He threw away our engagement ring, and…” Momo paused, glanced at Bian Xi, and continued, “He said he wouldn’t let me off easily.”
After she finished speaking, Bian Xi didn't show much reaction on his face. Momo thought he would at least have some different reaction, but he was so indifferent, which surprised her.
"Brother Bian Xi, did he threaten you too?" Momo couldn't help but ask again.
Bian Xi nodded, then smiled at her, "You've already been captured by them, do you think they'll let me go so easily?"
He told me to take the initiative to break off the engagement with you.
"I'm sorry..." Momo's first reaction was to apologize, "It was all because of me."
"Why are you saying this? It's not your fault." Bian Xi immediately got up from the sofa and then reached out to hug her.
He gently comforted her, "Don't overthink it, there will always be a way to solve it."
Momo leaned on his shoulder and nodded slowly. "When I came back this morning, I had already gone to the police station to report it."
Bian Xi reached out and touched her hair. "It's right to call the police, but Momo, don't have too high hopes. I don't think there will be any results in the end. Since they've already done it, they'll definitely destroy all the evidence."
