I woke up, looked up and saw Ji Lin'an in front of me, and my emotions got a little out of control: "Ji Lin'an, let's go home, okay?"
Ji Lin'an was terrified when he saw my appearance. He immediately started the car and sped home. As soon as I entered the house, I threw myself into Ji Lin'an's arms: "I'm so sorry, you killed me but I could only watch you die in front of me."
Ji Lin'an reached out and hugged me, patting my head to comfort me: "It's okay, look at me, I'm alive and well now, aren't I? If you hadn't suggested seeing the future before taking action, I might be gone by now. You saved me, silly."
Feeling comforted, I sniffed and let go of Ji Lin'an. Ji Lin'an pulled me to sit on the sofa and gave me tissues to wipe my face. After calming down for a while, I told Ji Lin'an what had happened.
Ji Lin'an rested his chin on one hand: "Did you see anyone else at the scene where I collapsed?"
I shook my head: "I didn't have time to look. I was afraid that if I lingered for even a second longer, I wouldn't be able to take you with me, so I grabbed you and teleported you home."
"Did you see clearly what the zombie was biting?"
I continued to shake my head: "I didn't see it clearly, but I recorded a video, and I was planning to watch it with you..."
Ji Lin'an said, "I wonder if there's a replay function for future scenes. It's just a minor illness, can you replay future scenes?"
"Master, Master, you can access the replay at the bottom right corner of the entrance to view future scenes on Future Island."
We immediately opened Future Island and watched the replay. The entrance was hidden so well that it was just a button the size of a pinhole. No wonder we had never found it before.
As soon as I opened the playback, I was transported to the future. I tried to close my eyes and quickly recall the scene before I started filming. When I opened my eyes, I was indeed in the scene where I opened my phone and was about to go there. I held my phone up and walked to the group of zombies. I tried to watch the footage recorded on my phone. After watching it many times, I finally noticed that the footage showed a manhole cover with several holes. Through the holes, I could vaguely see the figure of a little girl under the manhole cover. After watching it several more times, I confirmed that the reason the zombies had gathered was because of the little girl hiding under the manhole cover. She looked about five or six years old. I fast-forwarded to the moment I broke down the door to rescue Ji Lin'an. In the corner of the hallway, I saw an old woman with blood all over her hands, clutching a blood-stained shard of glass. Her eyes were red and swollen, tightly closed. The redness around her eyes spread to her cheeks, as if some powder or liquid had gotten into them. She stood there, her face streaked with tears and fear. I noticed a red strip of cloth on her wrist, seemingly torn from a bed sheet or similar fabric. It was tied in a knot, but still had more than twenty centimeters of length remaining. A picture flashed through my mind of the little girl who had gripped the makeshift ladder under the manhole cover with both hands, her wrists also bearing the same red strip of cloth, just like the old woman's.
After recording the key information I saw, I exited the replay and told Ji Lin'an everything I had seen. After thinking for a few minutes, Ji Lin'an said, "The little girl and the old woman are very likely together. Let's assume the red cloth strip was tied by the old woman because she was blind, to prevent her granddaughter from running around. But the little girl and the old woman were separated by accident. The old woman was blind and could not see. When she heard me going to check the commotion, she mistook me for a zombie and stabbed me."
I nodded: "So it seems like they can be connected, but the strip of cloth looks quite sturdy. I just saw that the gap left by the red string on Grandma's hand was neat, not like a gap where the strip of cloth was torn. If the strip of cloth was torn in the panic when encountering zombies, the gap in the strip of cloth should not be neat."
After thinking for a few seconds, Ji Lin'an said, "It's also possible that the old woman cut the rope to lure the zombies away and protect the little girl."
I had some questions: "Then why is it the old woman in the house instead of the little girl? It seems like the little girl attracted the zombies."
Ji Lin'an replied, "Perhaps the little girl cut the rope to save her grandmother."
I sighed, "If that's the case, then the little girl is so sensible. She's probably still under the manhole cover. Maybe we should use a drone to check."
We walked to the garden and deployed the drone. From a distance, we could see a group of zombies gathered together. They were still surrounding the manhole cover, and many more were on their way.
Looking at the little girl in the picture, I felt a pang of pity: "If this continues, the manhole cover will soon be unable to withstand the pressure, and the little girl will definitely become someone's meal."
Ji Lin'an stood up with a smile: "Let's do a good deed. Anyway, we're going to lure the zombies to the vicinity."
I'm torn. I'm a bit too sentimental, but the thought of Ji Lin'an dying again and again in the future makes it impossible for me to unconditionally support him.
Ji Lin'an suddenly pinched my cheek: "It's okay, come with me. I only want to give it my all when you're by my side."
Looking at Ji Lin'an's determined gaze, I nodded helplessly, grabbed my gear again, and drove off. As we neared our destination, I saw a car parked in the distance—a car I hadn't seen in the future footage. This car was different from the others on the street; although the body was dirty, the windshield was clean, unlike the other cars which were so dusty you couldn't even see what was inside. I called out to Ji Lin'an, and we stopped about thirty meters away from the car.
Ji Lin'an looked at me with concern: "What's wrong?"
I frowned: "The windshield of that car in front is very clean, which proves that it must have been driven and parked there by a living person."
Ji Lin'an looked in the direction I pointed: "Indeed."
I continued to observe the car in front: "For safety's sake, let's stop and observe for a while. At this time, we should not expose ourselves to others, as we do not know whether the other party is friend or foe. Look at the car with a lot of dried blood on the front; it seems like the driver is a dangerous person."
