Longevity for Two Thousand Years

Duanmu Ci, courtesy name Zigong, a native of the State of Wei in the late Spring and Autumn period, was a highly esteemed disciple of Confucius, who has lived for two thousand years.

He once ...

Chapter 100: Jenny's Story

Since the first strike in world history was launched by workers in the royal cemetery during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses III in the 12th century BC, this skill has been acquired by colleagues around the world and learned through detailed historical records on papyrus.

That document is now kept in Turin, Italy.

This skill was particularly prevalent in the 19th and 20th centuries following the Industrial Revolution, and it received enthusiastic praise from Marx and Engels, who vigorously promoted it in their respective major works. In China's education system, this is also heavily lauded in history and political textbooks, making Duanmu Ci feel it was essential for him to learn it.

But he's not a working-class man; he's a businessman! So this skill needs a different guise: a market strike.

The history of market strikes is actually quite long. As early as the Song Dynasty, the scholar Ye Shi mentioned that "At the beginning of the Shaoxi era, the iron coin system was corrupted, and merchants suffered heavy losses. Wherever there was a strike, people went into a frenzy and closed their markets." In China, with its long history, almost every strange thing has an ancient origin, and this event is no exception.

During the May Fourth Movement, this skill was used repeatedly. Even if Duanmu Ci had never eaten pork, he had seen pigs run! How could he not learn it by imitating it?

Even if Morgan buys the whole street, so what? He only owns the land rights to that street, but he has no say in the shops on it! They have proper property deeds, and Morgan can't just do whatever he wants with them. He only has overall rights to the street; he has no say in the details!

Although Morgan could collect huge fees from the shops on this street every year—a deal that would benefit future generations—the problem was that they had no control over the shops! Was Morgan so confident that things would remain calm and normal after a change of ownership? To dare to spend so much money in a situation where the lines between friend and foe were still blurred was utterly foolish.

This street was acquired by Duanmu Ci during the Great American Stock Market Crash of 1929, and it has been more than 80 years since then. Through personnel changes, Duanmu Ci not only once owned the land rights to this street, but also all the shops, buildings, and even office buildings on the street are now his property.

This street is his sword's edge, and the shops along it are his scabbard. Now Morgan only possesses the blade, which can easily cut his fingers!

However, these industries all trade under different names, so no one knows about these things and just thinks that these businesses are just scattered.

These shops were "gifts" that Duanmu Ci prepared for the Morgan family.

Morgan will definitely like it! Duanmu Ci thought with certainty.

You can't return it if you don't like it!

Jenny manages a jewelry store on a magnificent avenue; she is the store manager. The jewelry displayed in the store is from Bucciellati, Italy's most famous jewelry brand. Managing such an outstanding store is something Jenny dreamed of when she was a student, and she is only 25 years old this year.

Many people who didn't know her background assumed she was the owner of the jewelry store and speculated about Jenny's background. After all, how could someone with a powerful background have a place on Chicago's most bustling commercial street at such a young age? Especially a luxury jewelry store.

Actually, they were only half right, because Jenny was indeed the owner of the jewelry store in name only, the legal owner. That's what it said on the government registration documents.

But please note that this is only the legal ownership. Things in this world are never that simple. Since there's a legal aspect, there must also be another aspect, such as the actual ownership. Even in the United States, the legal ownership isn't necessarily absolutely true.

In reality, Jenny's family life was originally very poor, only slightly better than those in the slums. Anyone who saw Jenny's past living conditions and photos would never connect that frail girl with the radiant, powerful new-generation woman she is today—they're completely different!

Only Jenny knew the truth. She and her classmates, nearing graduation from university, were doing internships in a large shopping mall. Although the mall was huge, her job was just a regular salesperson. She spent her days tirelessly trying to persuade customers to buy, but without much success. She couldn't understand why those who were clearly less capable than her could outperform her so much. Was it because her colleagues preferred conducting business in hotels, while she preferred coffee shops?

All of this changed on an autumn afternoon.

Jenny will never forget that time when her customers were a young Asian couple. She completely ignored their unexpectedly beautiful faces and immediately thought, "They're Chinese, they must be very rich!" Then she began enthusiastically and tirelessly selling her products.

To her surprise, the man remained silent for a long time after hearing this, only staring at her face and mouth. Just as she was feeling nervous and wondering what was going on, the man suddenly smiled and said to his female companion, "This girl is not bad. Aren't we still short of a store manager? Let her give it a try."

She still remembers the man's tone—so nonchalant, so indifferent, as if he had simply picked out a nice decorative item and was saying to his companion, "This is nice; I can take it home and use it as a decoration." At the time, she also assumed that the "store manager" the man mentioned was just someone who ran a small grocery store or restaurant, since many Chinese people in the nearby Chinatown were doing that.
