Chapter Four

At the hour of Shen (3-5 PM), the students bowed to their teacher to bid him farewell and returned to their respective homes.

Jiang Yan, carrying his book box, followed the crowd out of the Feng residence. Nearby, students walked in pairs, chatting and laughing, while Jiang Yan walked alone, feeling out of place.

Some people were secretly observing him. This person who had been suddenly shoved in was poorly dressed and thin, so he must be a poor scholar. Moreover, he had angered the teacher by spouting nonsense as soon as he entered. Everyone had their own judgment.

This person is not worth befriending.

Jiang Yan followed his memory along the winding corridor to find Master Shu, but when he reached the gate of Feng Ziyi's secluded courtyard, he was stopped by the gatekeeper and told that Master Shu had already left.

Jiang Yan's gaze swept over the tightly closed door of the main house in the courtyard. The umbrella he had prepared for Shu Dajia before leaving today was leaning against the door. He lowered his eyes and remained silent, quietly carrying his book box and walking out of the mansion.

He stood outside the main gate of the Feng residence, waiting quietly.

Pingyang is rainy at this time of year. The weather, which was originally sunny, gradually darkened as the sun was blocked by layers of clouds and a light rain began to fall.

Jiang Yan had no umbrella. The only shelter from the rain in the Feng Mansion, with its green tiles and white walls, was under the eaves in front of the main gate. Fine rain, as thin as cow's hair, fell from the sky, leaving a crystal-clear white line that seeped into her clothes, bringing a chill.

Vendors in the distance began frantically setting up their awnings. This kind of fine drizzle is the most annoying, often lasting all night and greatly affecting business.

If he went a little further away to find a shop to take shelter from the rain, Jiang Yan would have been able to. But he stubbornly stood outside the main gate of the Feng Mansion, letting the drizzle fall all over him, his eyes fixed on the main gate, waiting for the person he was supposed to go home with.

The fine, continuous rain quickly soaked Jiang Yan's outer garment. The damp chill seeped through the clothes to his skin, making his already pale face even paler.

The servant at the door felt a pang of pity upon seeing his state, but mindful of Young Master Feng's instructions, he simply waved to the boy and said, "Go back quickly, this rain is freezing."

Jiang Yan kept his head slightly lowered, his eyes downcast and silent. He didn't move an inch. His hair, wet with rain, clung to his handsome eyebrows and eyes, making him look gentle and obedient.

Today was his first day of school. Shu Dajia had said that she would go back with him after school. The servant of the Feng family lied to him, but he knew that Shu Dajia had not left yet. Since that was the case, he could not leave first and had to wait for Shu Dajia to go back together.

The handsome young man was stubborn and stood there obstinately. The servant of the Feng family could only sigh. Young Master Feng was always gentle and humble and never harsh on his servants. Why would he be hostile to such a child?

In the courtyard where Feng Ziyi lived, Shu Yun heard the sound of rain pattering on banana leaves outside the window. Feng Ziyi, sitting to her left, was sitting upright and writing something.

There's only one oil-paper umbrella at home. The new umbrellas from the shop haven't been delivered yet. I don't know if Jiang Yan has arrived home yet. He should have arrived by now, since school ends at Shenshi. I hope he doesn't wander around and get caught in the rain.

She told Feng Ziyi to continue writing, then got up, took her umbrella, and walked to the courtyard gate, asking, "Has Jiang Yan been here?"

The servants exchanged glances, then bowed respectfully, "May I ask who Jiang Yan is?"

"The young man I brought with me today."

The two servants exchanged a glance, and one of them said, "He came by, and we already reminded him to leave first."

Shu Yun nodded and looked along the cobblestone path that had been wet with rain. The canna lilies on both sides of the path, with their flower buds, were even more vibrant red under the nourishment of the drizzle. For some reason, she still couldn't help but feel a little uneasy.

Feng Ziyi's pen remained stuck on the rice paper, her mind wavering. The question the teacher had given this time was indeed quite difficult.

What exactly does it mean to know but not act, to act but not succeed, or to be inconsistent in knowledge and action? The discussion of knowledge and action is an eternal theme, but the teacher's question is not just about simple knowledge and action, which makes it difficult.

Shu Yun said to the two servants at the door, "Tell your young master to consider this carefully and not to rush things. I'll be leaving now."

"yes."

She was too lazy to go back in to get the book, since she would need it tomorrow anyway, so she simply left it there. She opened her umbrella and left. Since she had picked up a child along the way, she should at least put in some extra effort.

The main gate of the Feng residence finally opened, and Jiang Yan's eyes lit up. However, a servant in brown robes came out. He pursed his lips and stood silently not far from the gate.

"Please take care, Mr. Shu."

The servant leading the way bowed deeply, his attitude as respectful as could be.

"Thank you." Shu Yun nodded in thanks.

The servant bowed and scraped, afraid that his attitude might offend everyone. "Not at all, it is our duty as servants to guide you, Master Shu."

As Shu Yun stepped out the door, she turned her head and saw her own child standing there, soaked to the bone, with raindrops dripping down his soft hair. His handsome little face was pale, and his clear black and white eyes stared straight at her.

An umbrella was held over his head, blocking the continuous drizzle. Shu Yun wiped the rain off Jiang Yan's face. "Didn't you go back a long time ago? Why are you still here?"

The cold raindrops on the boy's face were wiped away by a soft, warm hand. He lowered his eyes and stood quietly. "Let's go home together after school..."

The rain and the chill made Jiang Yan's voice hoarse, as if he was frightened by the unpleasant sound. He shut his mouth halfway through his sentence.

Shu Yun understood because she had previously told him that they would go back together after he finished school.

She pulled Jiang Yan closer, letting the boy's thin shoulders rest against her. She tilted the umbrella slightly in her hand, shielding his entire body under it, and muttered, "With such a photographic memory, how could you be so foolish in this matter? Learn to be more flexible next time. You can go back and wait for me first."
