Chapter 5 My Mother Was a Noble Elf?

The moonlight was cool, and the night breeze was just right. Yun Zhe shook the simple backpack on his shoulder and strode out of the cemetery.

Although it was only for a day, Yun Zhe had many wonderful dreams about his future life, such as encountering a beautiful woman in distress, a righteous knight, and even things like witches and magic schools. These were all common plots in the fantasy novels of Yun Zhe's world.

But reality is cruel; the first person Yun Zhe encountered was a gravedigger.

When Yun Zhe encountered the gravedigger, the gravedigger was eating outside his hut by moonlight. A bowl of porridge and a plate of black bread. The gravedigger wore tattered clothes, his eyelids drooped, and his face was covered in wrinkles. Upon seeing Yun Zhe approach, he nervously dropped his spoon, shakily picked up the torch hanging on the door with one hand, and gripped a wooden stick with the other, barely managing to straighten his body.

"Who are you?!" the old man shouted, raising his voice.

Yun Zhe stretched out his hands to indicate that he had no weapons, and then slowly approached the old man.

Upon closer inspection, the deep wrinkles on the old man's face, like those slashed by a knife and axe, were even more shocking.

The old man stared at Yun Zhe with a meaningful look in his eyes.

Yun Zhe was frightened by the old man's gaze and dared not take a step closer. He was nervous. "Could it be that there was something wrong with the clothes I was wearing that made him notice? Or, do vampires have some special features that he recognized?"

Yun Zhe, who lacks understanding of the world, is very insecure about his own actions.

"Ah...where do you come from, Aruru?" the old man asked, his voice hoarse and slow.

Strangely, this word inexplicably ignited a fire within Yun Zhe, even though it was the first time he had ever heard of "Aruru-jin." Suppressing this nameless anger, Yun Zhe suddenly became curious about the term. He had never seen it in his diary before, but it would be foolish to ask what "Aruru-jin" meant at this moment.

Yun Zhe forced a smile of approval, then pointed to the tomb chamber he had come out of.

The old man squinted, gazing clearly into the distance. He seemed to have pinpointed where Yun Zhe had come from, and nodded with a sigh. "Such a long journey, it must have been difficult. Where are you going? Do you intend to go to Saba?"

Yun Zhe realized that the old man had obviously misunderstood the meaning of his finger, but this misunderstanding was good, as it put his mind at ease.

Yun Zhe shook his head, thinking to himself, "What a joke, going to a big city at this time is practically suicide."

The old man nodded again, seemingly understanding where Yun Zhe was going. "I know where you're going. It's a long journey, no rush. If you don't mind, why don't you rest here for the night?"

Yun Zhe quickly waved his hand and shook his head. "I'm traveling under the cover of night. If I rest here for the night, won't that expose everything?" "No, no, I'll leave this cemetery. There must be a village or something nearby. I'll rest in the village."

The old man noticed Yun Zhe's resistance and grinned. "Although it's a cemetery, it's remote, and no one has ever come here before... That's right, you Aruru people hate places like cemeteries. Do you know the way to the nearby villages?"

Yun Zhe shook his head again, suppressing his anger once more, and thought to himself, "Three people sneaked in yesterday, you just didn't know it."

The old man looked surprised. "You don't have a map?"

Yun Zhe shook his head again, "No."

The old man tapped the ground with a wooden stick; there must have been a stone on the ground, because it made a clanging sound.

“You…” the old man sighed, “Why do you do this to yourselves?” He then seemed to have made a difficult decision. He beckoned to Yun Zhe. “Come here, little Aruru. I don’t have many prejudices. After you leave the cemetery, follow the path downhill. Turn right at the first fork, then left at the second. Walk for about an hour, and you’ll see a village. My home is at the far east end of the village. Once inside, go straight to the very end; you’ll see a row of thatched huts. My children are there; they’ll take care of you.” With that, the old man finished the porridge in the bowl in a few gulps, placed the bread on the table, and put the bowl and plate together in a small wooden basket, handing it to Yun Zhe. “Take this, and they’ll believe you.”

Yun Zhe took the small wooden basket, the words of refusal on the tip of his tongue, but he didn't say them.

"Let's go then. We can always leave before dawn." Yun Zhe made his decision and nodded.

Thank you. May I ask your name?

"Hahaha, my name is John, and you, little Aruru?" After saying that, the old man seemed to remember something and rubbed his hands awkwardly.

“My name is Yun Zhe,” Yun Zhe translated these two characters directly.

The old man scratched his head, seemingly puzzled by the name, and his gaze towards Yun Zhe became strange.

Yun Zhe knew things were going badly, but that damned vampire hadn't even left his name in his diary! He should have used his family's names to impersonate him; what a blunder.

Yun Zhe was regretting his actions when he was stunned by the old man's words.

"With that name, your mother must have been an elven noblewoman..." She said, her eyes filled with pity, but then fell silent, putting the torch back and sitting down. While scrutinizing Yun Zhe, she sighed, "What a tragedy... those adults are truly wicked, utterly despicable..."

As if remembering something, the old man got up, took another torch from the house, lit it, and handed it to Yun Zhe. Then he waved his hand, his tone full of kindness.

"You should hurry up and get home as soon as possible so you can get some rest."

Yun Zhe was completely confused, but he nodded, thanked them, and left the cemetery.
