It was already dark when the Gu family returned.
Gu Ye heard voices coming from downstairs, got up from the bed, saw that Bao Ni was sleeping soundly, gently closed the door, and went downstairs.
Downstairs, Grandpa Gu returned, and his eldest brother and his family of three had just entered. Gu Feng from his second uncle's family was also there, but Gu Feng's wife and child were not seen. Gu Yuan and Gu Lan were also present.
"You brat, you've finally decided to come back!" Gu Zexian said with a laugh as he saw Gu Ye coming downstairs.
"Grandpa, I'm back." Gu Ye glanced at his brother and greeted his grandfather first.
"It's good that you're back. Where's your new wife?" Grandpa Gu was quite puzzled as he didn't see Lin Baoni.
"She was exhausted from all the commotion in the car and had just fallen asleep, so I didn't wake her."
"It's okay, get some more sleep. We're home now, there's no need to be so fussy."
The third generation of the Gu family consists of Gu Ze, the eldest son; Gu Feng, the second son; and Gu Ye, who is one year younger than Gu Feng. Next are the two sons of Gu Sanshu's family, Gu Wei and Gu Nan. The youngest is Gu Bei, the twin son born to Gu Xiangdong, who is only ten years old.
The oldest of the other girls is Gu Yuan from Uncle Gu's second family; she's twenty-one and engaged, but not yet married. Gu Lan is eighteen, and Gu Yu from Uncle Gu's third family is sixteen. The remaining girls are Gu Mei, born to Xu Fang, who is thirteen, and Gu Xi, who is ten.
The fourth generation of the Gu family consists only of Gu Xuanyu from the eldest brother's family and Gu Panpan from Gu Feng's family.
Grandpa Gu is in his early seventies and is semi-retired; it's only a matter of the next year or two.
Gu's father worked in the logistics department, while Gu's third uncle was not in the military but was the deputy director of a military factory. He was also a university graduate and quite capable.
Grandpa Gu's small building is usually occupied by Grandpa Gu, Grandma Gu, Gu Feng's family of three, Gu Yuan, and Gu Lan. Gu's older brother has his own two-bedroom apartment in the same compound.
"Second Uncle, did you bring me a gift? What about Second Aunt? I like the conch shell she sent me last time; it lets you hear the sound of the ocean."
Gu Xuanyu didn't remember his second uncle, but he did remember the gift!
"Your second aunt is sleeping. She'll bring you a gift when she wakes up."
Gu Ye picked up the little guy and held him in his arms; he was quite soft.
"Okay, I'll wait a bit." The little guy was a little disappointed, but he didn't throw a tantrum. He hugged Gu Ye's neck and wasn't shy at all.
"You're back?" Grandma Gu came out of her room and said casually.
"Um."
Gu Ye was even more audacious, replying with just one word.
"Sister-in-law Wang, please cook some rice porridge. Panpan's stomach isn't feeling well, and the doctor advised her to eat light meals." Grandma Gu went straight to the kitchen.
"Gu Ye, it's time for dinner. Tell Bao Ni to get up and relax a bit. She can go back to sleep after dinner." Gu's sister-in-law winked at Gu Ye.
"Okay, I'll go check it out."
Gu Ye went upstairs without speaking to Gu Lan, who was looking at him with a hesitant expression.
"Big brother, look at second brother, he's ignoring me." Gu Lan complained to her eldest brother, pouting, like a child who hadn't gotten any candy.
"You're awake. Are you feeling better?" Gu Ye pushed open the door and saw Bonnie sitting on the bed.
"Yeah, I woke up and saw you weren't in the room, so I didn't go out." Bonnie was sleeping soundly; she doesn't have trouble sleeping in different beds and can sleep well anywhere.
Bonnie wasn't familiar with the Gu family, so when she saw that Gu Ye wasn't there, she didn't move and waited for him to come back.
"Let's go downstairs, it's time to eat. Grandpa and my older brother are back too." Gu Ye stepped forward and pulled Bonnie off the bed.
Bonnie looked at herself: black pants, a sky-blue sweater. She glanced in the mirror; her hair was neat, and there was no eye discharge. She looked presentable.
When everyone saw Bao Ni walking out from behind Gu Ye, they were all a little surprised. They didn't expect Gu Ye's new wife to be such a cute and adorable girl.
"Baoni, it's your sister-in-law, welcome back." Sister-in-law Gu was the first to react, greeting Baoni with a smile.
"Hello, sister-in-law, I'm Lin Baoni." Baoni greeted Sister-in-law Gu in a generous and unpretentious manner.
"Bonnie, this is Grandpa, come over and say hello."
"Hello Grandpa, I'm Lin Baoni." Baoni spoke confidently to Grandpa Gu without any fear.
"Good, very good, welcome back." Grandpa Gu casually took out a red envelope from his pocket and handed it to Bao Ni. Bao Ni naturally accepted it and thanked him.
Everyone was even more surprised. This was truly a case of ignorance being bliss. To have such courage in front of Grandpa Gu was something no one else could do.
You should know that Grandpa Gu is a veteran who has been through many battles and whose hands are stained with blood. Most people don't dare to speak loudly in front of him.
"Dinner's ready." Sister-in-law Wang stood at the kitchen doorway, inviting everyone to eat.
Everyone got up and went to the kitchen.
The Gu family's kitchen is very large, with a long table that can seat about twenty people.
Grandpa Gu sat at the head of the table, with Grandma Gu next to him, and Brother Gu on the other side. The others took their seats in order.
Grandpa Gu said, "Welcome home, Gu Ye and Bao Ni. Let's have dinner."
Gu Ye placed a piece of stir-fried mutton on Bao Ni's plate, indicating that she should eat her fill and not go hungry.
Bonnie also picked up a piece of fish for Gu Ye, telling her that she wouldn't be hungry and that she would definitely be full.
Everyone stared wide-eyed at the two people sharing food. Was this the germaphobe Gu Guye? Or was he an imposter?
Regardless of what others were doing, Gu Ye and his companion ate and drank as usual, prioritizing filling their stomachs first.
"It's like they haven't eaten in centuries, how stingy," Gu Lan muttered to Gu Yuan beside her, their voices quite loud.
Gu Ye glared at her, and she immediately narrowed her eyes.
"Eat." Grandma Gu didn't like to talk while eating; she believed in not speaking while eating or sleeping.
Bonnie didn't care about their complicated relationship; nothing was more important than eating.
She placed another piece of braised pork on Gu Ye's plate, telling him to eat more and talk less, as the food would be gone in a while.
Gu Ye's expression softened, and he ate the braised pork that Bao Ni had placed on his plate.
"I'll get you another bowl." Seeing that Bonnie had finished eating, he got up and got her another bowl of rice, pressing it down a bit, as he felt there wasn't much rice today.
Everyone was once again astonished by Bonnie's appetite. She's so small and not fat at all, where did all her food go?
After Gu Ye added another bowl of rice, the rice bowl was empty, so Gu Ye added some more for Bao Ni.
The two of them were full, but it was unclear whether the others were full.
"Sister-in-law Wang, put in an extra bowl of rice tomorrow." The kitchen was Grandma Gu's territory, and she had the most say there.
During the meal, Gu Feng's wife secretly glanced at Bao Ni several times, wondering where this country bumpkin came from and how she could eat so much!
After dinner, everyone returned to the living room.
Grandpa Gu took Gu Ze and the others to the study to discuss matters concerning the army. Bao Ni sat with Sister-in-law Gu, teasing Gu Xuanyu.
"Second Aunt, the seashell you sent me last time was wonderful! I could hear the sound of the ocean, and I loved it so much." The child's sincere words were truly heartwarming.
"Really? I knew I should have brought you a few more this time," Bonnie said regretfully, adding an emoji.
"Ah, then I'll tell you in advance." Gu Xuanyu's voice was filled with regret; it was such a pity.
The two chatted happily, one after the other.
