Chapter 74 The Heartbreaking Cry

Pushing open the door, the outside was a complete mess.

The ground was littered with broken branches and vegetable leaves. The bean trellis that Bonnie had set up had been uprooted, and bean vines were still entangled on the bamboo poles, with a few small beans stubbornly hanging there.

Other vegetable seedlings were not spared either, and all were moved from their original locations.

Bonnie first pulled out the bamboo pole and put it aside, thinking she could use it later. She dragged the broken branches to the wall, dried them, and used them as firewood.

Bonnie, how are you?

Mrs. Huang from next door, perched on the wall, asked with concern.

"Sister-in-law, I'm fine, just a window was broken. What about yours?"

"I'm fine, it's just that the vegetable seedlings were all uprooted, but it's okay, I've already picked all the vegetables."

Both of them were experienced; after exchanging a few words, they went about their own business.

"Oh my god, what happened?"

Zhao Yuan came out and was startled.

"It's okay, this is normal. Go to the kitchen and cook. I'll tidy up the yard first. The child should wake up soon."

Zhao Yuan entered the kitchen, glancing back every few steps, while Bao Ni quickly tidied up the broken branches and leaves in the yard.

"Mommy, I need to pee."

Liu Jiu woke up, put on her shoes, and came out.

Bonnie rushed over and took the child to the toilet to relieve himself.

"Liu Jiu, are you still sleeping?"

"Don't sleep, get up."

Bonnie carried her into the house and dressed her. Bai Song and Bai Yang also woke up, rubbed their eyes, and after a moment of realization, remembered that they were at Liu Jiu's house.

"Where's my mom? I want my mom."

Bai Yang, who had just woken up, was a little fussy and cried as she looked for her mother.

"Zhao Yuan, your little poplar tree is looking for you."

Bai Song comforted his little sister for a while, and the little one stopped crying.

Zhao Yuan came in wearing an apron, and Bai Song went out to relieve himself after getting dressed.

Bonnie took Liu Jiu out, gave her some water, and let her play by herself.

Liu Jiu watched his mother work and imitated her, pulling the branches towards the wall.

Bonnie didn't stop Liu Jiu from working; she just kept an eye on him out of the corner of her eye to make sure he didn't get hurt.

The white pine, having finished draining the water, joined in and worked enthusiastically with Liu Jiu.

Zhao Yuan took Bai Yang to the kitchen. After a while, the aroma of food wafted out, and Bao Ni felt even hungrier.

"Dinner is ready. Wash your hands and eat."

Bonnie and the two children washed their hands and went to the kitchen for breakfast. After working all morning, Bonnie and Liu Jiu ate heartily. Bai Song was also hungry and ate one bite after another. Bai Yang didn't eat much, probably because he hadn't slept well.

After dinner, Zhao Yuan took the child home, not knowing what the house looked like yet.

Bonnie continued tidying up the house. The chickens were let out, and Liu Jiu took some vegetable leaves to feed them. Bonnie did the final cleaning, and the yard returned to its usual cleanliness.

The vegetables in the yard are all ruined. We'll replant them when we have time, and we can still grow another crop of autumn vegetables.

Bonnie went to Zhao Yuan's house for a quick look. Apart from the yard being a little messy, there were no other problems. Bonnie didn't stay to help; she wanted to go back to her parents' house.

The whole way was chaotic.

Trees broken by the wind lay across the middle of the road, and flowers and grasses were scattered all over the ground; not a single one was intact.

Bonnie carried Liu Jiu, stepped over the obstacles on the road, and it took her a long time to get back to her parents' home.

"Grandma, are you home?"

"Bonnie, come in quickly. What brings you here? How was last night? Are you alright?"

Grandma and Bao Ni's mother came out of the house and asked anxiously.

"It's alright. Apart from the yard being a little messy, everything's been tidied up. Did my father and the others go out to sea?"

"No, your grandpa and the others felt the weather was off, so they didn't let anyone out. It's just that some members of the second team went out, but they haven't come back yet, and we don't know what's going on."

Bonnie was surprised that fishing boats actually went out; they were all experienced fishermen, how come...

"Didn't the second team get a new captain? Why are they still so reckless?"

"It's because we overworked before, and we wanted to do more to make things easier for the team."

Two small boats went out yesterday, they probably didn't go very far, I wonder how they are doing.

Bonnie felt a pang of sadness. Fishing at sea was always risky; more than one member of the Lin family had perished at sea. For over a hundred years, they had lived like this, with no other choice.

Bonnie asked her grandmother to watch the child while she helped her mother tidy up the yard. There wasn't much vegetable left, but luckily it was all seedlings, so she wasn't too upset. There was no use in being upset anyway; it happened every year, and she'd get used to it.

Just as the yard was tidied up, Bonnie heard a crying sound.

"What's wrong? What happened?"

Grandma ran out and asked anxiously.

"Grandma, slow down, the ground is slippery. I didn't know, I just heard crying. You stay home, I'll go to the beach to check."

"Okay, you go and check on it. We'll watch the child."

Bonnie ran towards the beach, the crying growing closer and closer, and more and more people appearing.

When they arrived at the beach, Bonnie saw her father and older brother helping to carry people down.

The medical staff also helped with the treatment. Two small boats went out yesterday with a total of twelve people. I don't know if they have all come back.

Seeing that the medical staff were tense, Bonnie went over to help; she knew how to do simple nursing care.

Whether you know them or not, at this point you can't care about anything else. You've just helped a person with a broken leg put on a splint, and then you pull out another person who hasn't breathed.

She's still very young, in her early twenties, and I don't know if she's married or not.

Soon, Bonnie found out that a heavily pregnant young woman had thrown herself at the young man, wailing and begging him to open his eyes and look at her. She said she couldn't leave her and the child behind, or they would have no way to survive!

Cries and curses echoed along the beach; it was incredibly oppressive. The injured were all taken to the hospital; besides the two who died, three others remained missing.
