The two dogs jumped off the wall and whispered to each other as they walked.
The yellow dog shook its head and muttered somewhat discontentedly, "Has this kid been on steroids lately? He's picking fights with everyone he meets."
The spotted dog glanced back at Li Yuheng, who was still perched on the wall, and lowered its voice: "Who says otherwise? When he first came, although he was a bit of a troublemaker and always laughing like an idiot, he was at most a simpleton."
"Now look at you, that mouth of yours is like it's been poisoned, it'll seize any opportunity to stab you in the back, it doesn't give anyone any face."
“That’s right,” Huang Gou agreed wholeheartedly. “The other day, the boss from the next block wanted to challenge him, and guess what he did? He just said that the guy was ‘ugly and delusional,’ and they almost got into a fight. His temper is getting more and more explosive.”
"He probably learned it from that black and white cat," the spotted dog speculated. "Have you forgotten? Ever since he and that cat started fighting, they've been bickering every time they meet. It's like a thunderbolt from the blue, and their insults are getting more and more vulgar. He probably learned it from arguing with that cat, and now he treats everyone like that."
"Tsk, you become like the company you keep." The yellow dog shook its head. "Let's go, let's stay away from him for now, lest we get another beating."
On the wall, Li Yuheng listened to the faint discussions coming from below and curled his lip in disdain.
Although they had said harsh words to each other that they would "never see each other again," the reality was that they lived on the same street and would run into each other all the time.
Since their unpleasant parting that day, Li Yuheng and Shu Bai have bumped into each other several times on this street.
Every encounter felt like a king not meeting another king.
"Tsk, like a persistent ghost." Whenever Shu Bai saw that brown and white figure, he would immediately hunch his back and let out a threatening growl.
Li Yuheng was not about to back down either, and immediately bared his teeth: "That's what I should be saying! I can smell your rotten stench everywhere I go!"
Then, almost without warning, the battle breaks out.
They fought from the street to the alley, from the garbage can to the rooftop.
Li Yuheng is, after all, a dog, and in the beginning, he always suffers when facing an agile cat.
He wasn't very familiar with cats' fighting styles and was often tricked by Shu Bai's feints, ending up with scratches all over his head.
"Stupid dog! What can you do besides rampage around like that?"
"You're still better than a coward like you who only knows how to hide! If you're so tough, then don't run away!"
"Run? I'm afraid you'll be so stupid you'll run into a wall! Watch where you're going, you idiot!"
"You're the idiot! You don't even have the strength to scratch someone, haven't you eaten?"
"Dealing with you doesn't require much effort; a mere flick of my claws is enough!"
They fought and cursed at each other, their barking and howling mingling with increasingly sophisticated personal attacks.
Of course, although Li Yuheng was at a disadvantage, he was not being beaten all at once.
He seized the opportunity several times and bit off a tuft of cat hair.
"Let go! You mad dog!" Shu Bai cried out in pain and swung his claws at her.
"Pah! Stinky cat! Your fur is so stiff!" Li Yuheng spat out the fur in his mouth and roared back defiantly.
They fought fiercely, kicking up dust and hurling insults with unrestrained passion.
Strangely, although every time they met they seemed to have an irreconcilable feud, fighting fiercely and hurling increasingly vile insults at each other, but they never went to such lengths to kill each other like the first time.
Li Yuheng's teeth were always just a little bit away from the crucial point of sparse white teeth.
The sparse white claws no longer truly sank deep into Li Yuheng's flesh.
Despite the fighting and the commotion, they all seemed to be adhering to an unspoken bottom line.
After a chaotic battle, the participants usually end up glaring at each other from a distance, panting heavily.
"Pah! You reek of dog stench!"
Shu Bai would lick his messy fur while cursing viciously.
"Get lost! Don't let your feline panleukopenia infect me!"
Li Yuheng would shake his head to relieve the stinging in his ears while retaliating without any politeness.
The stray cats and dogs around them initially watched, tried to break up the fight, or even stirred things up, but eventually got used to it.
Seeing the two of them facing off, I automatically gave up the spot to avoid being caught in the crossfire.
This pair of rivals seemed to have made this pattern of fighting whenever they met and then leaving a regular form of entertainment on this street.
Some wise people even jokingly called it: "The Cat and Dog Version of the King of Fighters Tournament".
…
Meanwhile, on the other side...
Shu Bai was squatting on a tall air conditioner unit, coldly watching two cats below hissing at each other over a fish bone.
One of the gray cats tried to mediate: "Brother, don't do this, can't we split it equally?"
The other tortoiseshell cat protested, "Why? I found it first!"
Shu Bai, growing impatient, coldly retorted, "What's all the fuss about? It's just a broken bone, yet you're arguing like it's nothing. You'd be better off rummaging through the trash cans; you might find something else there."
Both cats looked up at the same time.
The gray cat said, somewhat aggrieved, "What you're saying is... we're not..."
"What do you mean, 'not what'?" Shu Bai interrupted him. "You think the bones are too small? Then go and grab the bigger ones. Stop wasting your time here."
The tortoiseshell cat got a little angry: "We'll argue, what's it to you?"
"Of course it's none of my business." Shu Bai squinted. "You're blocking my sunbathing. If you want to fight, go somewhere else, don't get in my way."
His tone was cold and harsh, filled with obvious impatience.
The two cats looked at each other, and in the end, the tortoiseshell cat picked up the bone and slunk away.
The other one quickly followed.
Shu Bai watched their retreating figures and snorted coldly.
A familiar calico cat peeked out from under the eaves: "What's wrong with you lately? Why are you so irritable?"
Shu Bai glanced at her: "What, since when do I need to be polite?"
"That's not what I meant. I just feel like you've been particularly irritable lately."
"Irritable?" Shu Bai smirked. "Then you haven't seen anyone more irritable."
He recalled Li Yuheng's smug, dog-like face and his incessantly chattering mouth.
The calico cat seemed to have thought of something too, and whispered, "Is it because of that beagle? Everyone says that you two are both getting more and more verbally abusive and fierce than the other."
"...It's none of his business."
"But……"
"No buts." Shu Bai stood up, flicking her tail impatiently. "What I do is my own business."
He paused, looked at the calico cat, and softened his tone slightly: "...But thank you for your concern."
After saying that, he leaped and jumped to a higher part of the wall.
Shu Bai was alone, perched on the wall.
He had to admit that the stupid dog had indeed affected him.
This not only made him more easily angered, but also made him increasingly impatient with other cats and dogs.
This change made him very unhappy.
I'm very unhappy.
He hated the feeling of being influenced.
I hate that stupid dog that was the culprit even more.
"unlucky."
Shu Bai muttered a curse under his breath, unsure whether he was cursing Li Yuheng or himself for becoming irritable.
He was just about to find a comfortable spot to lie down when he caught a glimpse of that familiar brown and white figure on the opposite side.
Li Yuheng was lying there lazily, and had obviously seen him too.
Their eyes met.
“What bad luck,” Shu Bai said first.
Li Yuheng scoffed, "That's what I should be saying. I see your gloomy cat face everywhere I go."
"If you're feeling down, you can leave. Is your name written on this wall?"
