As August arrived, G City was so hot that cicadas and birds were chirping.
Around six in the morning, before the alarm clock even went off, Gu Yueji was already awakened by the heat.
Even with the fan on full blast blowing directly at me, I'm still drenched in sweat, feeling sticky and uncomfortable.
Because her room faces due east, with only one thin wall and poor ventilation, the room becomes stuffy and hot in no time after the sun rises in the morning. It's okay in winter, but every summer Gu Yueji wakes up very early from the heat, and her sleep time becomes shorter.
Turning to look at Ren Jin, he was lying sprawled on the bed, wearing only his underwear. The blanket had been kicked away somewhere and was nowhere to be seen on the bed.
In this one-bedroom apartment, she only installed one air conditioner in the living room, so they don't have air conditioning when they sleep at night.
Ren Jin has a high body temperature and gets hot easily, often waking up from the heat in his sleep. Because of the heat, he hadn't come to see her for several days. Last night, he suddenly felt like coming, picked her up, and went straight to bed, unable to resist the heat.
They were both soaking wet in no time. His sweat dripped onto her face, and she was all slippery with sweat, making it difficult for him to hold her. So, it was over not long last night.
Seeing that his face and muscular chest were shiny with oil, as if he had been sweating profusely, Gu Yueji silently got up and opened the door to the room.
Ren Jin woke up naturally and checked his phone. It was almost eight o'clock. This was the latest he had slept at Gu Yueji's place in a while. Usually, he would wake up from the heat around 6 o'clock.
He slightly raised his body and looked towards the doorway. He noticed that the fan, which had been moved to the doorway at some point, was blowing in gusts of cool air. He felt like he wasn't fully awake yet, otherwise, why would Gu Yueji, that tightwad, be willing to turn on the air conditioner so early today?
To save on electricity bills, Gu Yueji only turns on the air conditioner when the temperature is highest at noon, and always sets it to the most energy-efficient 26 degrees Celsius. Around 5 pm, when the sun begins to set, she turns it off and never turns it on at night.
It's not that she doesn't feel hot; sometimes she's so hot that she takes several showers a day. But she just endures it and doesn't turn on the air conditioner. According to her, she can't stand having the air conditioner on all the time.
Aside from her frugality regarding air conditioning, Gu Yueji was incredibly stingy in all other aspects of her life, including food, clothing, and household items. All her clothes were samples she tried on during live streams; she absolutely refused to waste any edible food, and her refrigerator was always stocked with leftovers. She used every last drop of household supplies, even refilling bottles with water to use up all the detergent and shower gel she had.
The slight breeze from the air conditioner blowing into the living room was so comfortable that it made Ren Jin want to keep sleeping. He lay on the bed and thought about buying her an air conditioner, but then he remembered that she was being so frugal to help her ex-boyfriend pay off his debts. She was even upset about the electricity bill, so he felt like he was meddling in her affairs.
They had been having late-night snacks and drinks, and Gu Yueji got drunk. She rambled on about her ex-boyfriend, about their wonderful youth in college, how he promised her a good life but ended up marrying someone else behind her back, leaving her with a mountain of debt to pay off.
At the time, he just thought that this woman, who looked so shrewd and shrewish, was also so silly and naive. What credibility could there be in the words she said so easily? A man's money was the most important thing. How much would a man who only buys you cheap cakes and makes you go into debt to make money for him care about you and love you?
As drowsiness overcame him, he drifted off to sleep again while thinking.
When Ren Jin woke up again, it was almost 9 o'clock. He came out to the living room and saw Gu Yueji standing in front of several clothes racks, organizing the clothes she would use for the live broadcast. The usual heat had subsided, and she was in a good mood, humming a little tune.
Ren Jin took a few steps toward the restroom when she called out to him, "Close the room door."
He stopped and sighed helplessly, scratched his head, and had no choice but to go back and close the door. When he came out of the bathroom, the air conditioner was indeed turned off.
This thrifty person really doesn't allow any electricity to be wasted.
"There's soup in the milk pot, you can cook the noodles yourself," Gu Yueji said while putting on makeup in front of the mirror.
It was already past 9 o'clock, and she was getting ready to start her live stream.
Ren Jin walked towards the kitchen. "Have you eaten?"
"You've eaten, what time is it?" Gu Yueji looked up at his leisurely appearance. "Why did you sleep so late today?" He usually wakes up around the same time as her and goes out to take orders before 8 o'clock.
Ren Jin turned around and gave her a roguish smile, "Wasn't I tired of serving you last night?"
Upon hearing this, Gu Yueji grabbed a small item from the coffee table and threw it at him, while Ren Jin hid in the kitchen and chuckled.
She's so easily teased; she gets angry as soon as you tease her.
The small saucepan was already on the stove, filled with the chicken soup they had left over from last night. The whole chicken was stewed with various mushrooms until the meat was tender and the soup was fresh, fragrant and rich.
Although Gu Yueji doesn't cook often, his cooking skills are exceptionally good. The few times he cooks, it whets his appetite, and he finishes everything.
His grandparents would just cook rice until it was done, without worrying about how delicious it was. He himself wasn't a good cook either, so he had never eaten any really good home-cooked meals growing up. Gu Yueji was the first person he knew who could cook well.
The noodles were ready in no time, and the aroma of piping hot chicken soup filled the air. Gu Yueji had already picked out the chicken bones. The noodles and tender chicken were cooked together, and Ren Jin ate them without even blowing on them to cool them down.
He ate half of it in two bites, then noticed there was still so much chicken under the noodles. While chewing the meat, he carried the pot out and asked Gu Yueji, "Why aren't you eating the meat in the pot? There's still so much left."
Gu Yueji had already finished her makeup. She looked at her makeup in the mirror from side to side before looking up at him. "Didn't you say you wouldn't have the energy to work if you didn't eat meat? You need to eat more to burn more calories."
