After finishing his noodles, Ren Jin conscientiously washed his own bowl and went to the balcony to collect his clothes.
When he came out after changing his clothes, they were still damp and clung softly to his body. Gu Yueji looked him over and asked, "Do you want to go back and change?"
Ren Jin shook his head, "My home is quite far from here, so I don't even need to make a round trip in the morning."
Gu Yueji couldn't help but ask curiously, "Do you only deliver food to this area? Do you never go home to rest after a full day of deliveries?"
"Each delivery driver is responsible for a specific area; who wants to rest when they're delivering food?"
Gu Yueji had actually seen Ren Jin once before, on the roadside outside the residential area.
"Let's go, I'll take the trash downstairs for you." Ren Jin said, picking up his keys and heading out, when Gu Yueji suddenly called out to him, "Wait a minute."
She went back to her room for a moment, then came out with a set of sportswear. "The clothes are clean, you can change."
Ren Jin looked at the clothes; they were quite new, but clearly worn. He didn't reach out to take them, saying, "I can't wear your ex-boyfriend's stuff."
Gu Yueji was stunned. The clothes did indeed belong to Ye Zurong. But he had never met Ye Zurong, so how did he know he couldn't wear them?
How do you know it won't work if you haven't even tried?
Ren Jin smirked, his tone both frivolous and blunt as he asked, "Guess why I went to buy condoms last night? Didn't you realize that my size is different from your ex-boyfriend's?"
Gu Yueji was stunned for a moment before she realized what was happening. She couldn't help but think back and realized that, whether it was height, body shape, or a certain part of her body, they really did seem different. Her face turned red as she thought about it.
Seeing her blush, Ren Jin leaned closer and asked meaningfully, "So, have you figured out why I can't fit into it anymore?"
Enraged, Gu Yueji threw the clothes on the sofa, saying, "Wear them or don't, it's up to you."
She sat back down at the coffee table and continued eating her noodles. Ren Jin smiled, went into the kitchen to get the trash, and squatted by the door to change his shoes.
As he crouched in the corner, Gu Yueji recalled the scene of seeing him before.
It was midday, the sun was high in the sky, and the asphalt road was steaming with wavy vapor. Cars were coming and going. He was squatting next to his small electric bike, eating a disposable lunchbox. He was wolfing down his food and sweating profusely.
In this world, it seems that everyone has such a hard time in order to make a living and to live happily. So where exactly are the happy people?
Ren Jin put on his shoes and prepared to open the door. Gu Yueji said to his back, "If you don't have anywhere to go for meals or rest, you can come here."
Ren Jin paused and looked back.
Gu Yueji tilted her head slightly, sitting on the ground watching him from afar. The sun was shining brightly today, and sunlight streamed in from the window behind her, bathing her in its glow.
"You can come anytime?" Ren Jin asked deliberately.
Gu Yueji nodded readily, "I'll open the door for you as soon as I'm here."
In the sunlight, her lips glistened with moisture as she opened and closed.
Ren Jin thought that Gu Yueji's lips were the most beautiful feature. Her upper lip was upturned and had a natural smile, while her lower lip was full and rounded, making people want to kiss her. He was particularly itchy to kiss her now.
Gu Yueji noticed that Ren Jin was looking at her without saying anything, seemingly hesitant.
She didn't understand what he was hesitating about; would he really suffer a loss? Feeling annoyed, she thought, "If you don't want to come, then don't."
“My name is Ren Jin, Ren as in Ren Wo Xing, Jin as in Jin Qian,” he suddenly said.
Gu Yueji was taken aback, only then realizing that they had never known each other's names. She never looked at the delivery riders' names, and her contact name for food delivery was just something she made up.
"Gu Yueji, Gu as in 'unwavering,' Yue as in 'joyful,' and Ji as in 'one's own,'" Gu Yueji introduced herself.
He smiled and said, "Okay, Gu Yueji, remember to open the door for me."
**
Days passed by in a regular pattern of sunrise and sunset, and Gu Yueji repeated the same things every day: live-streaming sales, managing the online store, communicating with manufacturers, and shipping goods.
With a series of sounds, the bathroom door opened.
Gu Yueji sat on the living room floor and looked up.
Inside the open doorway, Ren Jin stood in front of the sink washing clothes, naked except for his underwear.
Gu Yueji stared intently, thinking that Ren Jin was probably the only ripple in her peaceful life.
The bathroom was too small for him; his large frame, just standing sideways, filled the entire space, and even if he wore clothes, he would probably get wet from the water droplets on the wall.
He works a lot delivering food, and the clothes he wears in the morning will have a thin layer of salt on them after being exposed to the heat for half a day. This salt is formed from the evaporation of moisture from his sweat. So every night he rinses his clothes with clean water before putting them in the washing machine to wash with her clothes.
He washed the clothes quickly, wrung them out, grabbed one hand and carried them to the balcony to throw them into the washing machine. He added detergent and started the machine. She would hang them up to dry before going to bed.
Ren Jin appeared in her life so naturally. He didn't come every day. Sometimes he would come to rest during mealtimes, sometimes his electric scooter would run out of power and he couldn't get home, or there was no reason at all. He would come and she would open the door, and then he would sleep until the next day before leaving.
Gu Yueji used to be someone who always thought about the future before doing anything. Before being with Ye Zurong, she considered whether they were compatible and whether their relationship could last. After they got together, she started planning their future together again. Her initial idea was that they would graduate, take the civil service exam, and live a simple, peaceful life together. However, after graduation, they started an uncertain business. She planned to work hard for two years to earn enough money for marriage, even without a house or a car. However, instead of earning money, they ended up with a mountain of debt. Then, as things slowly improved for them, and she was planning to pay off the debt and get married, Ye Zurong abandoned her and became someone else's groom.
