The next day, the workers changing shifts at the construction site got up early to go to work.
The sounds of footsteps and voices woke Ren Jin and Gu Yueji almost simultaneously. Ren Jin groggily wiped his face, trying to wake himself up, while Gu Yueji whimpered and rolled over to bury her head in his arms, trying to escape the noise that was disturbing her sleep.
This house, built with an iron frame, makes a lot of noise, even with the slightest movement. Hearing her soft, dissatisfied groan, Ren Jin put one arm around her and gently covered her ear with the other.
Gu Yueji is usually easygoing, but she has a terrible temper when she wakes up. If she's sound asleep and gets woken up, she might bite.
Ren Jin had been bitten by her before. When he couldn't help himself and woke her up from her sleep, she bit his shoulder and whimpered in dissatisfaction.
Ren Jin held the person and comforted them until a group of workers left the dormitory and the surroundings quieted down. Only then did the person in his arms gradually regain their breathing calm.
Ren Jin usually gets up to go to work with the first shift of workers, but today, because of the soft and fragrant body in his arms, he got up half an hour later than usual.
He tiptoed out of bed to change his clothes, and just as he finished dressing and turned around, Gu Yueji suddenly sat up, rubbing her eyes. "What time is it?"
Ren came over and tidied her messy hair. "It's only 5 o'clock, you can go back to sleep."
Gu Yueji shook her head, threw off the covers, and got out of bed.
Ren Jin asked in confusion, "Why are you up so early?"
Gu Yueji closed her eyes and used her feet to find her shoes. "I'll make you breakfast."
Ren Jin was charmed by her appearance and sat back on the bed with a smile, hugging her. "Are you still half asleep? This is a construction site, and there is breakfast in the canteen."
Gu Yueji opened her eyes somewhat dazed. She was indeed confused, firstly because she wasn't fully awake at this time, and secondly because she was really tired last night.
Ren Jin put her back in bed and she slept there all night; the blankets were filled with her sweet fragrance.
"It's noisy here. If you really can't sleep, go home first. I'll go back tonight."
Gu Yueji kept rubbing her eyes, still sleepy. "Are you going home tonight?"
"Um."
Ren Jin made a decision: he would try to go home more often in the future, so as not to give others a chance to overthink things, and he didn't want Gu Yueji to worry too much.
Last night, after holding her as they fell asleep, he couldn't help but start thinking about why she could so easily say the word "divorce." Was it because she didn't completely trust him and therefore wasn't entirely at ease about their marriage?
Ren Jin didn't blame her. After all, he knew her past. It was normal for someone who had been deceived and betrayed more than once to have psychological trauma, especially since he was one of the people who had deceived her.
Trust is not something that can be repaired with just a few words.
He covered her with the blanket, then locked the door and went downstairs to do his work.
After a busy day, just as dawn broke, steam rose from the canteen as breakfast was freshly prepared.
Ren Jin looked up at the door of his room on the second floor. He thought that he hadn't seen her come out of the room or make a phone call. He wondered if she was still asleep or had gone home. So he walked straight through the dining hall, intending to go upstairs to see if she was still there.
"Mr. Ren, where are you going? I've already prepared breakfast for you. Come and eat it while it's hot."
Ren Jin paused, turned around, and saw Xiao Hong standing at the entrance of the canteen with a bright smile. Her face was covered in white powder, her lips were painted with bright red lipstick, and she was waving at him while holding his lunchbox.
Ren Jin's eyes suddenly turned cold. "Who told you to get me food?"
Zhu Xiaohong's smile froze. "Boss, I've always been the one serving you food. Didn't you say before that I always served you your favorite dishes?"
Because he was often too busy to come to the canteen during mealtimes, and their lunchboxes were all placed on the shelves in the canteen, Ren Jin would have someone fill his lunchbox for him, and he would come to eat after he finished his work. But he never paid attention to who filled his lunchbox for him, let alone praised Zhu Xiaohong for the food she filled.
Fortunately, Gu Yueji wasn't there and didn't hear it, otherwise she might have started threatening divorce again.
He snatched the lunchbox and saw that Qian Mingjun had just come to eat breakfast, so he shoved the lunchbox into his hand and said, "You don't need to get breakfast, just finish this."
Qian Mingjun, holding the lunchbox in both hands, was taken aback. "What's wrong, brother? Aren't you going to eat breakfast?"
“Your sister-in-law is still sleeping upstairs. I’ll go check if she’s awake and then take her out to eat.”
"Oh? My sister-in-law is here? When did she arrive?"
The construction site was dusty and full of large machinery, so Ren Jin rarely let Gu Yueji come over.
Ren Jin, recalling Gu Yueji's comment that Zhu Xiaohong looked at her like a rival in love, deliberately said, "I missed your sister-in-law last night, so I had her come over to meet me."
Upon hearing this, Qian Mingjun looked envious and said, "Hey bro, stop showing off your love so early in the morning. I won't be able to eat breakfast later."
"You'll understand when you find a wife. Once a man is married, he only has eyes for his wife and doesn't care about anyone else."
As Ren Jin spoke, his gaze swept over Zhu Xiaohong, who looked completely innocent and clueless, as if she couldn't understand what he was saying. So he pointed to his lunchbox and said to Qian Mingjun bluntly, "From now on, you're in charge of getting my food. Don't let anyone else get it, understand?"
Qian Mingjun nodded blankly, then followed Ren Jin's gaze to Zhu Xiaohong, only then remembering the rumors circulating at the construction site a couple of days ago.
Because he knew that Ren Jin would never mess around with someone at the construction site, and Ren Jin and Gu Yueji's relationship was so good that he was sick of seeing them being so lovey-dovey, he just treated the rumor as a joke and moved on.
Gu Yueji's sudden arrival and Ren Jin's deliberate avoidance suggest that Gu Yueji is jealous.
Qian Mingjun patted his chest and assured him, "Don't worry, brother, from now on, all your meals will be made by me."
