"I understand." Jiang Zhen pulled his sister into his arms and hugged her. He put his cheek against her belly and said in an unfathomable tone with his eyes closed, "Brother will protect you. Brother will not let you be bullied. I swear."
"I believe you." Jiang Bi said she believed in her brother, but in her heart she knew that her brother was incapable of protecting her. This place was too backward, and they were too young to resist.
Jiang Bi fell asleep at night and was suddenly woken up by someone in the middle of the night.
Jiang Bi opened her eyes drowsily and saw Jiang Zhen standing beside her bed with a bag on his back.
Jiang Bi was startled.
"Brother!" Jiang Bi quickly sat up.
Jiang Zhen shushed her and whispered in a low voice, "Hurry up and change your clothes and leave here with me!"
"Where are we going?" Jiang Bi's face turned pale with fear. Even though children have short memories, she still vaguely remembered that her brother was almost beaten to death because she ran away.
So Jiang Bi didn't dare to escape again.
Jiang Zhen began to put clothes on Jiang Bi in a hurry. As he put on the clothes, he said, "It's three o'clock now. Everyone in the city is asleep. Come with me and I will take you to China."
"Brother has already found out everything. We are very close to China. We can take a bus to Nanyang Province in China. Once we get there, we can find a solution!"
Jiang Bi was panicked when she heard this. "What should we do if Dad catches us?"
Jiang Zhen paused.
"No." Jiang Zhen said calmly, "He drank tonight and will sleep soundly. He won't notice us."
Jiang Bi nodded blankly and ran downstairs with Jiang Zhen.
Jiang Zhen asked Jiang Bi to wait in the living room while he boldly walked towards his adoptive father's room. Jiang Bi was extremely anxious and whispered, "Brother, why are you going to Dad's room? Aren't you afraid of waking him up?"
Jiang Zhen had already opened his adoptive father's door. Hearing this, he stopped and glanced at the motionless man on the bed. His eyes suddenly turned cold. "No, he's drunk."
After saying that, Jiang Zhen walked to the bed, lifted up his adoptive father's pants, and found a key in his pocket.
Jiang Zhen took the key, opened the locked cabinet, and took out all the money inside.
Jiang Zhen stuffed the money into different places, and hid the money that couldn't fit into Jiang Bi's socks. Jiang Bi let Jiang Zhen stuff the money into her socks. She stared at her adoptive father who was sleeping soundly on the bed, and suddenly grabbed Jiang Zhen's hand.
"He's dead, right?" Three glasses of wine wouldn't make my father drunk like this.
Jiang Zhen pursed his lips, looked at Jiang Bi deeply, and then nodded.
"Brother, you killed someone..." Jiang Bi's voice trembled, and her little face turned visibly pale, looking pitiful.
Jiang Zhen grabbed Jiang Bi's hand and told her seriously, "Girl, he forced me to do this. He wanted to send you to be a child bride. He wanted to force you to die! So he deserves to die!"
Jiang Bi was so frightened that she burst into tears. She said helplessly, "What should we do? The police will arrest us."
"We're leaving now, overnight!"
Jiang Zhen has been planning for this day for a very long time.
He took Jiang Bi and rode his bicycle into the city in the dark. At that time, the small county town on the border of Vietnam was very poor, and bicycles were still the main means of transportation.
Jiang Zhen rode his bike with Jiang Bi out of the city, then abandoned the bike and walked along the cement road. As dawn approached, Jiang Bi was exhausted, but she still held her brother's hand and gritted her teeth as she continued walking.
Early in the morning, the first minibus took off. Jiang Zhen took Jiang Bi, got on the tattered minibus, and got off at the old street.
After getting off the bus, Jiang Zhen bought two steamed buns, one for each of Jiang Bi, and devoured them ravenously. Jiang Zhen hid with Jiang Bi until dark, then took Jiang Bi to buy two expensive tickets and boarded a shabby van that was used to smuggle people out of the country.
The people on the bus were all migrant workers, both men and women. The bus was severely overloaded, and Jiang Bi and Jiang Zhen were squeezed into a corner. The ride was so bumpy that both siblings vomited when they got off.
Jiang Bi vomited so much that she lost all her bile. She squatted on the side of the road, looking at the edge of the unfamiliar city in front of her, and asked her brother, "Brother, where are we?"
Jiang Zhen stood in an unfamiliar environment, raised his head, looked at the outline of the small city in the distance, and murmured: "This is China..." For some reason, he suddenly had the urge to cry with tears in his eyes.
Jiang Zhen wiped his tears and waited until everyone else left before he pulled Jiang Bi to the side of the van and called the driver.
The driver was smoking. Upon hearing this, he looked the children over with a sharp gaze and said with a knowing look, "You escaped."
Jiang Zhen nervously grabbed Jiang Bi's hand and told the driver, "I want to make a deal with you."
"Yo." The driver was amused. It was his first time doing business with such a young child, so he showed interest. "Tell me, what do you want from me?"
Jiang Zhen said, "I know you must have some RMB on you. I want to exchange some with you."
The driver scoffed and said, "Little boy, this isn't the Kingdom of Yue. Money here is very valuable. The little money you have isn't even enough to fill my stomach."
Jiang Zhen said, "I've checked the exchange rate, and I know what it is today. I'll give you all my money. I have five million Vietnamese currency here, and you give me ten 100-yuan notes, how about that?"
In that era, five million Vietnamese currency could be exchanged for about 1,400 yuan. Jiang Zhen exchanged one thousand yuan from the driver for a minimum of four hundred yuan.
