Chapter 16 I Will Protect You

"I've been working overtime until now, and I came to see you as soon as I got off work..." Su Mei held Wan'er's hand and looked her over from all angles.

"I'm really impressed with you. I'm perfectly fine, what are you worried about? But you, you haven't even washed your eye boogers off." As Wan'er said this, she shook her head and reached out to wipe away the eye boogers from the corner of Su Mei's right eye with her fingers.

"You're changing the subject again. Nothing unusual happened last night, right? Where is he?" Su Mei persisted, turning her head to look around.

"I sent him away, so nothing happened. But the way you knocked on the door so urgently was really unusual. If I weren't familiar with your method, I wouldn't have opened it..." Wan'er turned her head, but stopped abruptly before she could finish speaking. It turned out that the little prince had somehow appeared behind Su Mei by the sofa.

Little Prince, don't let her see you! Wan'er remained calm and quietly placed one hand at her side, waving it slightly towards the Little Prince.

She...she wants me to hide? The little prince seemed to understand Wan'er's meaning, so he lowered his head, crouched down, and with a "whoosh!" he quickly ran along the ground and through the crack in the door to the bedroom.

"Thump!" Perhaps in a moment of panic, the kitten bumped into the door frame and couldn't help but meow.

"It's over!" Wan'er exclaimed inwardly.

"Ah!" Su Mei was indeed startled and turned around. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a flash of blue.

"Wan'er, you!" Su Mei stomped her foot angrily, about to get up and follow her, "Why did you lie to me?"

“Meimei, listen to me,” Wan’er grabbed her and stretched out her tender, lotus-root-like arm to press Su Mei’s shoulder and push her back into her seat. “I know you’re worried about me, but he’s not an evil creature. He’s the life my parents asked me to save in a dream, so no matter what, I will never abandon him.”

"What, what did you say? A dream?" Upon hearing this, Su Mei's upper body immediately stiffened, and she looked up at Wan'er in disbelief.

“Yes.” Wan’er nodded solemnly. “At first, I didn’t believe the dream was real, so I didn’t tell you. It wasn’t until I saved him that I believed it, but…” Wan’er sighed, then stopped speaking.

"But what?"

“He probably already has an owner, and I doubt I can keep him for long,” Wan’er said, her expression clearly somber. “I suddenly realized that I actually need a pet myself. Last night, because of him, my cold symptoms seemed to have completely disappeared when I woke up this morning. Perhaps he is my lucky charm…”

"Now that you mention it, I don't know what to do." The more Wan'er said this, the more strange Su Mei felt. "Why don't you call him out first, so we can meet him properly?"

Looking through the crack in the bedroom door, Su Mei's eyes held a mixture of anticipation and trepidation.

"I'll give it a try. His name is Little Prince, but I don't know if he can understand me." Seeing that Su Mei seemed to have changed a bit, Wan'er perked up and called out, "Little Prince, come out and meet my good friend Su Mei."

After the shouts, the door remained quiet, and the little prince did not come out.

"What's wrong? Is he shy?" Wan'er stood up and walked into the bedroom.

"Meow!" The little prince sat on the bedside table and meowed plaintively at Wan'er. His eyes clearly told Wan'er—

I don't want to see her; this woman doesn't like me.

"It's alright, I'm here. I'll protect you." Wan'er seemed to have read his mind. She bent down and picked up the little prince...
