Chapter 24 Loving Mother

Chapter 24 Loving Mother

When Chu Xiang got out of the car, she told Gu Heng, as usual, to drive safely.

These words seemed to possess a mysterious magic, constantly echoing in his ears. Even after arriving home, Gu Heng sat in his study, aimlessly staring at the computer screen, without moving for a long time.

As he gets older, he rarely has things he can't figure out. Even when he's sitting at the negotiating table with someone to discuss a so-called big business deal, he doesn't feel as lost as he does at this time.

The phone on the table rang for a long time.

After sitting quietly for a long time, Gu Heng finally picked up his constantly ringing phone and answered the call.

Chen Wanrou's voice came immediately, "Aheng, come back today for the weekend."

Gu Heng: "Is something the matter?"

Chen Wanrou said affectionately, "What are you saying, child? Do you think I only come to you when I need something?"

Gu Heng didn't respond, because that was indeed the case.

Chen Wanrou said, "You live outside every day and rarely come back. I want to see you more often."

Gu Heng: "I just went home for dinner a few days ago."

"You said it yourself, it's been several days already, that's quite a while," Chen Wanrou said with a smile. "Aheng, do you remember when you were little, I took you to Aunt Sun's house to play?"

Gu Heng: "Mm."

That was on his tenth birthday. Gu Jue was almost three years old and was sent to kindergarten early to get used to the environment. Because Gu Jue adapted well, Chen Wanrou was finally able to take some time to care for her eldest son.

Chen Wanrou originally planned to take Gu Heng to the amusement park, but halfway there she received a call from her close friend from before her marriage. Her friend, whom she hadn't seen for a long time, had returned to the country. Chen Wanrou and Gu Heng discussed it and decided to change their plans and go to Aunt Sun's house instead.

It was called a discussion, but it was really just a decision made unilaterally by Chen Wanrou. After all, although Gu Heng was young at that time, he had been taught by his grandfather for many years and did things in a very methodical manner, making him seem much more mature than his peers.

Gu Heng's interests lie in learning and cultivating various talents. How could he possibly be interested in such childish things as children?

And it seemed to be true. When they arrived at the stranger's house, Gu Heng just sat quietly on the sofa. Chen Wanrou chatted happily with the aunt Sun about the past, while the quiet boy didn't seem to have much of a presence.

Chen Wanrou said on the phone, "Do you still remember Aunt Sun's daughter? You two used to play together when you were little, and you got along really well back then."

What's fun to do?

The girl, who was about the same age as Gu Heng, was initially curious about him. However, she later noticed that Gu Heng seemed much more mature than his age. He wasn't enthusiastic when talking to others, and he was too serious.

So the girl stopped paying attention to Gu Heng. She would play with her dolls one minute and cling to her mother the next, saying that she and Gu Heng got along well, but that was completely false.

Gu Heng had long forgotten what the girl looked like. He said, "What exactly are you trying to say?"

Chen Wanrou sighed on the phone, "Aheng, you're not young anymore. Look at your classmates who are the same age as you, they're all married and fathers now. Aunt Sun's daughter just came back after finishing her master's degree, and I invited them to come over for the weekend. You haven't seen each other for so many years, it would be good for you to get to know each other better."

Chen Wanrou almost blurted out the words "blind date".

Indeed, she spent too much time paying attention to Gu Jue, but there was nothing she could do about it. Gu Jue was young and immature, so she had to worry about him.

But that doesn't mean she doesn't care about her eldest son. She's very concerned about Gu Heng's marriage. As soon as she learned that her friend's daughter had returned after completing her studies, she immediately started trying to match them up.

Chen Wanrou said earnestly, "Aheng, you should really think about your marriage. From childhood to adulthood, I've never seen you get close to any girl. Many people your age, even if they don't get married, have had several relationships. But you, you're not even interested in dating. Do you know that there are rumors going around that you like men?"

Chen Wanrou took a breath and then said, "Your younger brother is much more sensible now, and he hasn't been asking to break off his engagement with Xiangxiang. Your father and I plan to let them get married after they graduate from university. Ah Heng, don't wait until your brother gets married while you, as the older brother, are still not married!"

Gu Heng lowered his eyelids slightly. "I'm not in a hurry to get married."

Chen Wanrou: "You're not in a hurry, but I am! I'm waiting to hold my grandson!"

Gu Heng: "I don't think my genes are so good that I must have children to inherit them."

Upon hearing this, Chen Wanrou became anxious. "What are you saying? Gu Heng, tell me honestly, you're not... you know, a staunch non-marriage advocate, are you!"

Gu Heng didn't answer the question, but instead said simply, "I have work to do on the weekend, so I don't have time to go home."

Chen Wanrou: "Then next week..."

Gu Heng: "If you're trying to introduce me to someone of the opposite sex, then I don't have time."

Chen Wanrou: "You!"

Gu Heng: "It's getting late, get some rest, goodnight."

Without waiting for a reply, Gu Heng hung up the phone and then temporarily blacklisted Chen Wanrou's phone number.

The word "marriage" that Chen Wanrou had mentioned earlier still lingered in his ears. He had never felt so annoyed by the word before. Can't people not get married?

For most people, marriage is perhaps a part of life.

He had heard of college students getting married as soon as they reached the legal marriage age. In today's fast-paced society, decisions about marriage and divorce can be made in a short period of time.

Gu Heng couldn't focus on the files open on his computer. He felt he needed to rest, so he turned off the computer, lay down on the bed, and closed his eyes.

An hour later, the person in bed opened their eyes in frustration.

In the dimly lit room, the ceiling, with its cold, somber tones, could only be vaguely discerned by the light filtering in from the window.

Gu Heng thought of Chen Wanrou's words about wanting to be with Gu Jue and Chu Xiang after graduating from university, and then he thought of Chu Xiang's words about getting married in two years.

A flood of memories rushed through his mind: his first meeting with Chu Xiang, his first conversation with Chu Xiang, his first touch with Chu Xiang, and that day under the dining table, when there were other people around, she quietly rubbed against his leg.

Even after so much time has passed, the sensation on his leg still seems to linger, constantly tugging at his nerves.

Gu Heng felt inexplicably thirsty. He put one hand over his eyes, his chest heaving more rapidly, and his breathing became inexplicably heavier.

The pride of being the eldest son of the Gu family and the instincts of being a man were constantly intertwined and fighting within him. No one knew what kind of torment he was enduring, and unfortunately, no one could help him.
