“Mr. Theodore, you said you hoped to cooperate with Twilight Town. I don’t quite understand, where does your confidence in us come from?” Todd looked at the two people with different expressions in front of him, wondering to himself whether they were acting.
The old man picked out a few kinds of fruit, stuffed them into his mouth, glanced at the angry-looking Adam's apple beside him, and slowly said to Todd, "Perhaps you don't know, but this isn't my first time in Muxi Town. On the contrary, I'm a regular here. I've been to the town's theater and seen the latest plays; I've also disguised myself to attend your lectures; and I've even sat on the harbor's pier and fished with the fishermen on the beach."
Todd rubbed his temples, looking at the guard captain, Hudgens, and Alfonso, the person in charge of the town's security. The two of them lowered their heads in shame.
Todd thought that it was really necessary to strengthen the town's security, otherwise one day, if someone took his head, no one would even know.
Todd sighed and turned his attention back to the president of the "Relief Society".
"Don't think I'm some old codger who only knows how to sit in a lab. In my youth, I traveled to many countries—the barbarians of the north, the empires of the south, the holy cities of the east..." Theodore looked at the different styles of decorations in the "Sisters' Inn" and the strangely shaped "fire gas bottle" (methane bacteria bottle) by the fireplace, and said with emotion, "But I have never seen a place like Twilight Town... Here, there is respect for tradition and recognition for innovation. Everyone can find their place, and every profession receives the respect it deserves. Knowledge here is the highest honor, not a venomous snake that the ignorant avoid."
Throatbone stared at the wooden cross hanging on the wall, biting his nails with his teeth, his face contorted: "But this is church territory, the town of Twilight and the Knights, all of this is a gift from the church, I don't think Mr. Todd will give it all up!"
Todd glanced at Rachel, Hudgens, and Alfonso beside him, and said inexplicably, "My faith comes from the Father, not the Pope..."
A glint flashed in Theodore's eyes, and he casually stroked his beard.
However, the look on his face remained impassive as he muttered to himself, "It's just the same old story in a different guise..."
Theodore pushed aside his plate, crossed his arms, looked at Todd, and said, "Let's talk about the successor."
Todd leaned back slightly, his face expressionless.
“To show my sincerity, I’m willing to talk about the ‘Necromancer Successor’ first…” Theodore’s words drew a loud protest from the throat bone.
"President! This is completely different from what we discussed before we came here!" The man, whose body was hidden under a thick black cloth, said anxiously to Theodore, "Have you forgotten? The church is full of despicable and cruel people! Not to mention that our beliefs are different from theirs!"
Rachel stood up, supporting herself with one hand and slamming her other hand on the table: "Shortsighted bastard! Shut your mouth! I used to share your views, but these days in Twilight Town have shown me a different kind of sanctuary."
There was no tremor in the throat bone's eyes, but no more words were uttered.
Theodore looked at the face beside him, a face clouded by hatred that had clouded all reason, a fleeting look of regret and helplessness in his eyes. He then said to Todd, "I believe you already know the origin of the 'Inheritor,' so I won't go into details. The 'Necromancer Inheritor' uses the bones of the inheritor as a vessel, then combines the corpses of mutants and ordinary people with it. At this point, although these combined corpses are nothing more than a pool of flesh and blood, unable to move, but..."
Todd, who was listening intently, followed Theodore's lead and asked, "But?"
“We have found something that, when combined with the bones of the inheritor, can reactivate these body parts and transform them into ‘necromantic inheritors’.”
Todd pressed on, "Something?"
Theodore smiled and said to him, "Todd, I hope to keep some secrets until our cooperation can go further."
Todd felt a little disappointed, but still nodded in understanding.
Theodore continued, "The 'Necromancers' possess most of the abilities of the alien species, and what's most surprising is that they have childlike intelligence and can understand some simple commands."
Todd recalled the "Frankenstein's monster," pondered for a moment, and said, "I've seen that monster; its appearance seems to have changed?"
“That’s right, the ‘Necromancer Inheritor’ you encountered at Watchtower was one of our earliest experimental subjects. Through observation, we did discover that it seemed to be constantly changing, somewhat similar to the mutation of an Inheritor. We tried increasing the amount of ‘Sutherland Relic’ into the experimental body, hoping to slow down the mutation. But the reality was completely contrary to our expectations; the ‘Necromancer Inheritor’ that received the ‘Sutherland Relic’ mutated faster instead…” Theodore stroked his beard, thinking about the scene in the experiment, and worry slowly surfaced on his brow: “As the days went by, I always felt that the experimental subject was constantly growing, like a child. We even discovered that it would sometimes hide from us and secretly devour the corpses of Inheritors…”
Todd pondered the chairman's words carefully and said in a deep voice, "That is indeed a problem."
“Besides that, the growth and actions of the ‘Necromancers’ require a large amount of flesh and blood as sustenance. Experimental subjects who don’t eat for a long time will become frenzied and may even exhibit aggressive behavior.” Theodore looked at Todd and said sincerely, “Of course, there are other things, which I will explain slowly when I have the opportunity. But first, I want to ask you, are you willing to cooperate with me?”
