Chapter Ninety-One
Josie greeted them naturally, "Hello! We just helped Uncle Hu out of the blue, but he was very kind and invited us to stay here when he learned we had nowhere to stay. Thank you all for your help tonight."
"Why are you being so polite? You helped Uncle Hu, so you're all our friends." The man with the buzz cut standing at the front, despite his fierce-looking face, pretended to be friendly.
Josie remained expressionless, her gaze sweeping across their faces one by one.
"Yes, survival in the apocalypse is not easy. Let's help each other. From today onwards, we are all friends."
As soon as Josie finished speaking, someone came up with food.
"Are you hungry? We have food here. Hurry up and eat something to fill your stomachs so you won't wake up hungry." The person carrying the food was a very kind-looking older woman.
As he spoke, he placed the food on the table next to Josie and the other two, and gestured to them in a friendly manner, urging them to eat quickly and not to be shy.
None of the three moved, their eyes all fixed on the food on the plate.
The plate contained not only potatoes, but also two slices of meat.
The meat was golden brown and glistening with oil, a feast for the eyes, nose, and palate, releasing an irresistible aroma...
If they were often hungry, they probably wouldn't be able to resist rushing over and feasting right now.
Lu Yuyang grabbed Qiao Xi's hand, seemingly to prevent her from sitting down at the table.
He didn't turn to look at Josie, but explained to the people opposite him, "We had already eaten dinner before we met them, so we're not hungry now and don't need to waste your food. There are many people here, so food must be scarce. Saving them is just a small favor, and letting them stay overnight is enough."
Lu Yuyang's rejection was gentle yet firm.
The lady serving the dishes said warmly, "We have enough food here, please don't be shy. You've been out all day, how can you not eat something? Have something to fill your stomach."
Josie chimed in, "He's right, we've already eaten. Let's leave this food for those who need it."
The older woman seemed about to say something, but was stopped by the man with the buzz cut next to her: "If you've really eaten, then I'll have someone take it away. Sister Li, take the three of you to rest."
The woman called Sister Li walked over, her expression unlike the others; she seemed somewhat dazed.
"Come with me."
She didn't seem as warm and friendly as the others.
After saying that, he turned around and left, not caring whether the people behind him followed.
Xie Jue remained expressionless, while Qiao Xi and Lu Yuyang smiled and nodded in response to everyone's enthusiastic gazes.
Then I followed behind Sister Li into the corridor.
Without saying a word, Sister Li led the three of them through a series of turns before pushing open a door.
She stood blankly at the door, saying, "You can stay here tonight."
After saying that, he was about to turn and leave when Qiao Xi grabbed his wrist.
She seemed startled and tried to pull her hand away in alarm, but when she looked up, she met Josie's friendly gaze.
"Sister Li, can I ask you a question?" Qiao Xi said with a smile.
Sister Li tried to pull her hand away but couldn't. "Wh...what's the problem?"
Josie's smile deepened: "You seem a little nervous?"
Sister Li's expression froze. "I...I'm not nervous."
"Really? Maybe I misread it. I just wanted to ask Sister Li where the restroom is? In case I need to get up to use the restroom in the middle of the night, this place is too big and I won't be able to find it."
Hearing Josie's question, she seemed relieved.
He pointed to the passage on the right, "Go to the end of this road, then turn left and you'll see the toilet."
After she finished speaking, she tried to pull her hand away again, but this time she still couldn't get it out.
"Sister Li, is there anything you want to say to me?"
Her gaze towards Josie was filled with a surge of emotions, but ultimately returned to calm.
Just then, a man's voice came from not far away.
"Sister Li, once you're done here, Brother Zhao wants you to come over."
She quickly broke free from Josh's grasp, almost running away.
"Okay, I'll be right there."
Sister Li ran past the man, but he remained standing in the same spot.
"You all get some rest, I'm off to work too," the man said to them, then turned and left behind Sister Li.
After everyone left, Qiao Xi was pulled into the room by Lu Yuyang.
“Something’s not right here,” Lu Yuyang said, giving his immediate assessment.
Josie knew he had figured it out, otherwise he wouldn't have so firmly refused their food.
Food is such a precious thing in the end times. It's understandable for one person to be great, but for a group of people to radiate holy light is even more remarkable.
No one raised any objection.
They gave the grandmother and grandson their precious food simply because they had helped them.
Josie nodded, "Something is wrong..."
She wouldn't explain it to them directly. Every setback in the apocalypse is an accumulation of survival experience.
She wouldn't take it upon herself to skip this step for them.
Instead, she turned to Xie Jue beside her, raised her hand and ruffled his hair that almost covered his eyes, "Xiao Jue, what do you think?"
Xie Jue's face remained expressionless. His eyelids twitched, and he looked at Qiao Xi with a calm gaze. "Yes, they have a problem."
Concise and to the point.
She's definitely not a child who's easily fooled.
“I just checked, they’re all ordinary people here, don’t worry. I’ll keep watch tonight, you guys go to sleep.”
Although he could tell that these people had problems, Lu Yuyang didn't take them seriously.
They do need to stay here for one night and leave at dawn tomorrow.
Josie didn't sleep well, waking up after only three or four hours.
Turning her head, she saw Lu Yuyang, who was on night watch, rubbing her hair and yawning. "Go get some sleep."
Lu Yuyang was lost in thought when he heard her voice and turned around. "I'm not sleepy. It's not safe tonight. I'll keep watch. You go to sleep..."
Josie sat up straight. "It's precisely because it's unsafe that you need to ensure you have enough energy. You sleep, and I'll use my shapeshifting ability to guard you. If they really have other plans, my ability to defend is the safest option."
After much persuasion, Lu Yuyang finally agreed to rest for a while and told Xi to call him in two hours.
The night was completely silent; there wasn't a sound in the passageway outside.
It turned into a stone and lay on the ground, waiting quietly.
Time passed second by second, and until Lu Yuyang woke up, the group of people did not make any unusual moves.
The first thing Lu Yuyang called out to her after waking up was, "Qiao Xi?"
"I am here……"
Josie only revealed her human form while they were talking.
In the darkness, the two looked at each other.
"They haven't been here?"
"Yes, it was a very quiet night."
Lu Yuyang pondered for a moment, "They didn't come last night, so it's even less likely they'll show up now to take a nap. Whatever they're up to, we'll leave once they wake up."
No sooner had she finished speaking than a faint sobbing sound came from outside the door…
