Chapter 93: Mission accomplished, but the dead end remains!

He peered at the thatched hut from afar, his eyes sharp and wary. The silk cloth bore many obscure and strange names of medicinal herbs that he had never heard of before.

He then looked at the people in the thatched hut who, though weak, did not seem to be dying.

"Hmph." He let out a cryptic snort and said to the tall, thin man, "If it really works, I'll remember your contribution."

His tone was casual, as if he had received not a prescription that could save the lives of an entire city, but an insignificant note.

"Sir! We're cured! Can you let us go now?" someone shouted from inside the shed, mustering their courage.

"Yes, sir! Let us out!"

The crowd stirred.

"What's all this noise about!" the official with the goatee snapped, a barely perceptible glint of coldness flashing in his eyes. "You're cured? Who knows if it's just a final burst of energy before death? All of you, stay put! We'll talk after the doctor has examined you!"

He turned his horse around and ordered the officers guarding the area, "Keep a close watch! Don't let a single one escape! If anything goes wrong, you'll be held responsible!"

After saying this, he rode away with his entourage, leaving behind a desperate crowd and a tall, thin man with a gloomy expression.

As Jiang Chan watched the official's departing figure, alarm bells rang in her mind. The other party's attitude clearly did not indicate that he valued the prescription!

As darkness fell, the abandoned land returned to a semblance of calm, but the survivors were filled with fear and resentment at being imprisoned again.

Jiang Chan held Xiao Tao, who had regained some energy and was dozing in her arms, and leaned against the cold pillar of the thatched shed.

Having avoided the crowd, the probe had already silently flown out.

Government offices.

In the dimly lit signing room, an oil lamp was lit.

During the day, the official with the goatee was frowning as he spoke with a middle-aged man dressed in a silk shirt, sporting a mustache, and looking like a clerk.

"...Master Zhao, do you think this prescription is reliable?"

Master Zhao stroked his beard, squinted at it for a long time, and slowly shook his head. "Absurd, sir! Don't believe it! Even Physician Sun was helpless against the plague, how could this kind of thing cure it?"

"But...those plague victims in the abandoned land..."

"Just a last gasp before death!" Master Zhao declared decisively. "The plague spread so fiercely, how could it be cured so easily? That witch must have used some evil method to suppress it temporarily. Once it breaks out again, the infection will be even more severe!" He lowered his voice, "Sir, hesitation will only lead to more trouble!"

"you mean……"

"They must be dealt with thoroughly!" Master Zhao made a downward cutting gesture, his voice icy. "Those people left in the abandoned land will always be a threat! If the plague on their bodies hasn't been cleared, and the guards are infected, it could spread into the city... If the higher-ups investigate, the consequences will be unimaginable!"

"How do we handle this? There are dozens of people..."

"Take advantage of the dead of night!" Zhao the clerk's eyes gleamed like a venomous snake. "Have someone prepare plenty of damp cloths soaked in sleeping potion, and cover them one by one! Then wrap them in lime, drag them to the large pit dug behind North Mountain, bury them, and pour more lime on them! Nobody will know! Tell everyone... the plague was too severe, and they all died overnight! To prevent further spread, they were disposed of overnight!"

The man with the goatee was silent for a moment, then the last trace of hesitation in his eyes was replaced by ruthlessness. "Fine! That's how it'll be done! You go and give the order yourself... Be clean! Make the move at midnight tonight!"

"Yes! Your Excellency is brilliant!" Master Zhao bowed and accepted the order.

The detector transmitted all of this clearly into Jiang Chan's eyes and ears!

Smothering! Burying the body! Lime pit!

Every word was like a cold steel needle, piercing her nerves!

The government! This is what they call the government!

They obtained the real antidote, but instead of using it to save people, they planned to slaughter the innocent who had already recovered, all to cover up potential "risks" and shirk responsibility!

And she was on that list of people to be "dealt with"!

The chill instantly seeped into my limbs and bones!

There was no longer any hope or hesitation in his eyes, only a cold killing intent and a resolute will to survive!

We can't wait any longer!

She gently shook Xiaotao awake and whispered in her ear, "Xiaotao, wake up, don't make a sound, we're leaving."

Xiao Tao nodded dazedly and hugged Jiang Chan's neck tightly.

Jiang Chan looked at Chen Yan beside her.

"Chen Yan!" Jiang Chan's voice was barely a whisper, "Follow me! Let's go!"
