Chapter 10 Departure
At this moment, the fat man also arrived.
"Get in the car!"
The two had already discussed it. Han Shuo quickly got into the car and moved to the passenger seat, while the fat man also successfully got into the car.
close the door!
The fat man clearly knew a lot about cars; without hesitation, he quickly pressed the button below.
"Boom boom boom!"
The ignition was turned on, and the car started successfully. Han Shuo glanced at it; this car had a keyless start system. If someone like him, who didn't know much about cars, were to drive it, he probably wouldn't be able to find the start button for a while.
Soon, the car started moving. The fat man quickly reversed, then sharply turned the steering wheel and shifted into drive.
With a whoosh, the car sped forward.
The nearby zombies followed closely behind the car, but their legs couldn't outrun the four wheels, and they could only eat the car's exhaust fumes from behind.
"Hahaha! You can't bite me, you can't bite me!"
The fat man clearly had a good attitude and was quite brave. After escaping the zombie encirclement, he laughed and muttered some boastful remarks.
Han Shuo shook his head, feeling relieved, and a slight smile unconsciously appeared on his lips.
This trip was not easy for the two of them.
In total, the two faced a total of nine zombies. Keep in mind that just one of them could kill most people. Even with Han Shuo's formidable fighting ability, the two still fought with all their might.
"Fatty, do you know the way?"
"No problem, don't let my being a homebody fool you, I grew up here."
The fat man chose the north gate; the residential area has two exits. The south gate leads to a main road, while the north gate leads to a side street.
This small street is near the river, which is where Han Shuo often exercises.
Comparatively speaking, it's definitely not as bustling as the main road. Naturally, there will be fewer zombies there.
As they were leaving the residential area, Han Shuo could already see the street ahead. Without Han Shuo's prompting, the fat man drove the car and crashed through the residential area's fence.
"Awesome!" the fat man shouted after driving completely out of the residential area.
"Follow the road along the river to the west." Han Shuo looked around. Although the east was closer to the city outskirts, there were more zombies, especially near the crossroads in the distance. Han Shuo could see several cars piled up together, blocking the road ahead.
Alright!
The fat man ignored traffic rules and drove in the direction Han Shuo pointed. He kept crossing the lines and driving against traffic, trying his best to avoid the zombies that came running at the sound of his voice.
"Haha! I've been wanting to drive it without restraint for ages, it's awesome!"
Han Shuo looked at the jubilant fat man and shouted out the window as well. Although he had maintained his composure these past few days, only he knew the pent-up emotions he felt.
After being released, Han Shuo took out a cigarette from his pocket and lit it.
"Give me one." The fat man's craving for a cigarette was also acting up. Han Shuo casually shoved the cigarette in the fat man's mouth and then lit another one.
The fat man didn't mind, took a big sip, and exhaled a cloud of smoke.
...
Soon, about five minutes later, the two arrived at the path by the river. It was much quieter here, with few buildings and sparse population; zombies could be seen every few dozen meters.
To avoid getting caught in the wheels of the car, the fat man haphazardly steered the steering wheel to dodge the zombies in the middle of the road.
It's still morning. Even if the two of them take a detour, they should be able to reach the outskirts in three hours.
"Big brother, I have good news and bad news. Which do you want to hear first?" the fat man casually called out to Han Shuo beside him.
Han Shuo leaned back in his chair with his eyes closed.
"OK."
"The good news is that we successfully escaped, hahaha." Han Shuo felt that the fat man had become increasingly abnormal since leaving home.
Perhaps because they had gone through life and death together, they became even more familiar with each other. The fat man's cheerful nature gradually came to the fore.
"Boring," Han Shuo replied with a sneer. He then closed his eyes to rest.
"Alright, stop fooling around. Big brother, I have some bad news."
"explain!"
The fat man smacked his lips. "Our car might not have enough gas; we probably won't make it out of town before it runs out."
After the fat man finished speaking, Han Shuo quickly opened his eyes and turned to look at the dashboard.
Indeed, the fuel gauge showed that the fuel level was almost empty.
The car the two were in was an SUV. Even if Han Shuo didn't know much about cars, he knew that this car was more luxurious and consumed more fuel than a sedan.
He sighed; there was nothing he could do. He was lucky to even have a car to drive at all.
"Let's keep driving, we still have some distance to go. Try to take a route that's a bit more secluded. Remember to find a gas station with fewer zombies later to refuel."
As expected, things didn't go as smoothly as Han Shuo had imagined. Every beginning is difficult, and now that the two had successfully escaped, the lack of gasoline seemed less important.
After giving the fat man a few instructions, Han Shuo took out a bottle of water from his backpack, drank about half of it, and threw the rest to the fat man.
"Alright, brother, just sit here comfortably. There are plenty of gas stations now, finding a place to refuel shouldn't be a problem."
The fat man drank the rest of the water in one gulp, then opened the window and threw the water bottle out.
"Gas stations should all have convenience stores. We're running low on food, so even if we don't go to gas, we need to find a way to get some spare food." Han Shuo suddenly remembered this as he took out his water bottle.
If the two of them really do drive directly to the suburbs, they really need to prepare food in advance.
"That's because you insist on eating so much in the morning."
"Nonsense! How can you fight zombies if you don't eat!"
...
...
Without realizing it, the fat man turned on the radio. There were no broadcasts anymore; instead, music from the USB drive in the car was playing.
It's a very old song, but the fat guy clearly knows it well and sings along loudly.
Han Shuo vaguely remembered that the song was called "Starting Over," and it was probably from the 80s or 90s. Now, in 2044, it is indeed a very old time.
A light and fast rhythm came from the speakers.
The fat man wasn't lying after all; this guy really does sing well. Han Shuo listened quietly from the side.
In the midst of an apocalyptic world where life and death are constantly at stake, being able to relax and listen to music is a truly delightful thing.
"I don't want to leave, I don't want to exist, I don't want to live too realistically."
"I want to leave, I want to exist, I want to die and start over."
These two lines of lyrics kept repeating in Han Shuo's ears. Han Shuo really liked them.
"Yes, since I've chosen to leave home, in this apocalypse, it's a kind of rebirth. And from now on, I will live well with this newfound self!"
