Chapter Nine
With the three pillars striking, not a single evil spirit that deserved to be killed was spared. Unfortunately, they were all newly reincarnated ghosts whose minds hadn't yet awakened. They didn't even see the shadow of the twelve crescent moons.
Officials from the Tokyo Shogunate arrived immediately to assist in the operation. Those who were to be arrested were all apprehended. Unfortunately, most were already delirious, and all they could do was grin and drool while laughing.
When the morning sun fully illuminated the earth, the crime scene was deserted, with nothing left behind.
It was as if nothing had happened.
"What? I don't see anyone?"
Chinatsu took off her fluffy outfit and put on a light pink, wide-sleeved kimono, paired with a pale yellow puffy jumpsuit. She looked incredibly sweet and gentle.
Like a lump of sticky rice cake, that was Sanemi's first impression.
"How could I not see anyone? There was only one person, and he was so tall!" She stood on tiptoe on the table, gesturing with her little hand raised high.
"A woman with the same hair color as me, and eyes as beautiful as mine..."
"She's the one who saved me, and suddenly she killed a lot of ghosts."
"Thump—"
The sound of a fist slamming into the head was crisp and clear, like slapping a ripe watermelon.
"How many times have I told you, don't step on the table! This is a place to eat!!!" Sanemi grabbed someone by the collar, dragged them off the table, and pressed them onto a small cushion.
Chika stared blankly at him, then sat down with a "smack" as he pressed her down.
"What are you looking at? Don't you remember what you wrote by hand?" Sanemi poked her head. "Go back and copy it ten times!"
Chika's head bounced back and forth as she was poked, her little hands belatedly covering her throbbing head, tears welling in her eyes, "Waaah..."
Sanemi narrowed his sharp eyes. "Don't cry! Try crying and see what happens! I told you to train yourself to sleep, and you ran around when I told you to sleep. You have the nerve to cry?"
"I can save you today, but what about after that? A whole house won't be able to protect you. What do you want to do? Rebel? Turn into a ghost?"
Sitting to the side, Kanroji Mitsuri stared wide-eyed, holding a cup of hot tea with a look of amusement, scrutinizing Sanemi and Chinatsu from side to side.
Butterfly squinted, trying to suppress a laugh, her fingertips barely able to hold back the curve of her lips.
It's no wonder they acted this way; this scene was just too interesting.
Sanemi's temper is universally acknowledged as terrible by the entire team, but for some reason, they didn't find this scene particularly frightening; instead, they found it incredibly endearing.
They could sense that Sanemi was more concerned than angry at that moment. They had seen Sanemi when he was truly angry, and he was completely out of control.
Everyone else was familiar with Sanemi, but Chinatsu was not. All she knew was that she had been suddenly scolded and beaten, and that she, being so weak, had to do something about it.
Then everyone saw that Chika's eyes were red and teary, and tears streamed down her face pitifully. She was crying while pursing her lips, which then drooped.
"It wasn't me who wandered off..."
"If you hadn't run around, how could a ghost have come to your room to catch you?" Sanemi reached out and poked her forehead again. "Liar!"
Kanroji Mitsuri, who provided the clothes, felt a pang of pity and whispered in her defense, "Well, what she said is true, and the other victims said the same thing... you know."
As soon as she finished speaking, she quickly covered her mouth like Butterfly, afraid that she might burst out laughing.
Shinobu Kocho released her hand from the corner of her mouth. "Yes, yes, it's said that there's a demon that can burrow underground and drag people directly into the ground."
Sanemi's expression stiffened. "Really? How come I didn't know that?"
He turned to look at Obanai Iguro, who nodded slightly.
Butterfly chuckled, "The moment you heard that Chika was in trouble, you ran faster than a rabbit, you didn't care about anything else."
These words were both a jab at Sanemi and a message to Chinatsu. She wanted Chinatsu to know that Sanemi was angry because he cared about her.
Chika understood what she meant, but that didn't erase the fact that she had been beaten. Her tightly pursed lips slowly relaxed, and soft sobs escaped from between her teeth, "Waaah—"
Sanemi's face instantly turned ashen, and he staggered back several steps, covering his ears with his hands.
Kanroji Mitsuri, holding a cup of tea: ? ? ?
Shinobu Kocho, holding a pastry: ? ? ?
Obanai Iguro, who was just watching the show: ? ? ?
Kanzaki Aoi, who had just entered, sensed something was wrong. Seeing Chinatsu's pouting lips, she braked and slammed the door shut again.
"Wah—woo—wawoo—"
A shrill voice pierced the sky, the teacup in Kanroji Mitsuri's hand shattered, the pastries in Kocho Shinobu's hand fell to the ground, the snake on Iguro Obanai's neck fainted, and the Kasugai crows that were squatting on the roof and chatting all stumbled and fell off the roof.
Sanemi: "..." He knew it.
The people in the room immediately became flustered, some trying to soothe her, others trying to calm her down. Finally, Sanemi's head was pressed down, and Kanroji Mitsuri mustered up her courage and knocked on it twice before she calmed down.
"Knock knock—"
Chika nestled in Shinobu's arms, her little shoulders twitching, smelling the pleasant fragrance and hearing the two crisp sounds, and finally smiled.
"So, you really didn't see that guy?" Qianxia asked one last time, unwilling to give up.
Everyone shook their heads in unison.
“Maybe he escaped beforehand,” Shinobu Kocho comforted her, stroking her soft head. “No news is good news, isn’t it?”
Chika pouted and nodded resignedly.
Sensing the easing of the atmosphere inside, Kanzaki Aoi, who had been waiting outside for a long time, opened the door and said, "Masters, Shinazugawa Genya has woken up."
Xuanmi, who had watched the farce unfold from the doorway, walked in, his body wrapped in bandages and leaning on a cane.
Without saying a word, the first thing he did upon arriving was to kneel down with a thud.
"Please, sir, teach me the way to exterminate demons and take me as your disciple."
