Chapter 480 Enticing a Change of Route

480

Tang Shengkai and his team were prepared for Blake to make things difficult for them on their way back. They had come to relieve Blake of their duty to escort Commander Han. However, they were ambushed before they even reached the rendezvous point.

Afterwards, the US troops were scattered in all directions. Blake was a coward to begin with, and his squad was already in the rear. He didn't even have the desire to fight. When he saw the other US troops fleeing, he immediately led his squad to retreat.

They're safe now and resting here. Blake has recovered and is causing trouble again. Chang Yin really wants to just kill him.

However, he still has a use now. They haven't completed their mission and only have two options: either return directly to their previous camp, or go to Base 5 to seek support.

This place is about 150 miles from Base 5. Their previous camp was more than 200 miles away. Now, if they want to go to Base 5, they need Blake's permission.

As soon as Tang Shengkai finished speaking, Blake did not lower his gun. He gestured for the two soldiers behind him to come forward and search the group. The soldiers roughly searched the backpacks and pockets of the men, every action filled with distrust.

Chang Yin, Tang Shengkai, and the others maintained a calm facade, but inwardly they were extremely dissatisfied with the American soldiers. After searching for a long time, apart from firearms, ammunition, and their simple personal belongings, the American soldiers found nothing suspicious on Chang Yin and the others.

The atmosphere suddenly became awkward. Just as Blake was wondering how to back down, Fei Shuwen suddenly clutched his stomach and bent over in pain:

"Captain... my stomach hurts so much, I think I ate something bad. I've been holding it in for a while, but I can't take it anymore..."

His outburst did ease the tense atmosphere somewhat.

Blake frowned, looking disgusted. "What a nuisance! Get this sorted out quickly, don't delay our trip!" He waved his hand, temporarily setting aside his suspicions about the group. However, his dislike for them wouldn't change.

Fei Shuwen returned slowly, and the group exchanged glances. Chang Yin squatted down, and while handing Fei Shuwen a water bottle, he caught a glimpse of Blake picking his nails with a dagger, his eyes glancing in their direction from time to time.

He secretly pondered to himself that although this "old fox" was as timid as a mouse, he was very cunning. He would have to put in a lot of effort to get him to obediently choose to go to Base 5.

“Captain Black,” Chang Yin straightened up, his face showing just the right amount of worry, “what do you think we should do next? Should we go back to the original camp? We should have traveled 200 li.”

Moreover, on the way back, we'll probably pass by the goddess's camp again, and what if we run into her people again...?

He paused deliberately, his gaze drifting to the distant, gloomy woods where the smoke of battle still lingered.

Blake snorted coldly, twirling the dagger in his palm: "Heh! What? Jon, are you scared? Oh, no, no, no! When you accepted the mission, weren't you full of confidence? Don't let me underestimate you. A yellow-skinned man loyal to the American army!"

Chang Yin cursed inwardly, but forced a bitter smile: "Captain, I'm doing this for the sake of the whole team. As you've seen, the Goddess's people are elusive and unpredictable. If our team encounters them again, we're likely in grave danger. I think my concerns are justified."

According to the map, we should be closer to Base 5. They have ample weapons, equipment, and support there; maybe we can even avenge our defeat!

"To avenge our defeat?" Blake scoffed, a hint of hesitation flashing in his eyes. "You think Base 5 is your backyard? You think you can just go there whenever you want? What if we run into an ambush on the way? Who's going to take responsibility?"

Chang Yin had anticipated his response. He pulled a crumpled map from his pocket and spread it out on the ground: "Captain, look, I found this by chance on the retreat route."

A hidden path is marked on it, bypassing the Goddess's main territory. Moreover, Base 5 is only 150 li away, much closer than returning to our original camp. As long as we are careful, I think we will arrive safely under Captain Blake's leadership.”

Blake leaned closer, staring at the winding lines on the map, a hint of suspicion in his eyes: "It's that simple? How did you manage to find such an important map?"

"Hehe, so, Captain Blake... wouldn't you say I'm very lucky?" Chang Yin feigned a teasing tone.

"I was hiding from bullets in the bushes when I suddenly noticed the map was under a rock. The rock was too hard, so I pulled it over and used it to cushion my knees. I have a habit of taking things with me, so I took it with me when I left."

I only opened it casually when I had some free time, and I never expected it to be such an important thing.

Chang Yin spoke fluently and confidently, showing no sign of lying. In reality, the map was a forgery prepared by Tang Shengkai beforehand. The seemingly hidden paths were actually carefully designed traps—once Blake led his team halfway there, the Goddess's people would surround them in one fell swoop.

However, before handing it to Blake, Chang Yin made some modifications. He felt that doing so was still too risky, because without American faces, it would be virtually impossible for a few Asians like them to enter the U.S. Army's Base 5 from the front.

"Hmph, I don't think it's that simple. Jon, I don't believe you at all." Blake stood up and paced back and forth.

"Jon, you're not trying to drag us into a fire because of some minor squabble we have, are you? I heard that Base 5 is conducting some kind of secret experiment recently, and it's heavily guarded. If we just go there recklessly, we might be mistaken for suspicious individuals and won't even have a chance to explain!"
